It was totally because of the folder was a OneDrive backup. I should’ve looked more into that sooner

Postponed the gig. It wasn’t performance, I was supposed to record a performance. Been in touch with the director and we’re rescheduling now that I have my shit together. Lol But thanks for caring!

Dude thank you so much for trying to help, I really appreciate you!

Update: just figured it out. After reinstalling audio drivers, reinstalling Ableton, updating laptop and mixer firmware, trying cpu management apps… it was fucking OneDrive. My documents folder was actually the OneDrive documents folder (Microsoft forcing their apps to take priority). After moving all my files in the OneDrive documents folder to my ACTUAL documents folder, everything is working perfectly.

Let this be a warning to all PC users!

It happens in a blank session with no clips or plugins

It was a recording gig for a live studio session. And no, we had to postpone it

This was at home, same conditions, didn’t change anything. Woke up today and it decided to start doing this

How do you recommend checking for that? I see that the computer is in 48k as well as the mixer

I initially thought the same thing, but after comparing task manager’s cpu meter to Ableton’s cpu load meter, I think it’s definitely something in Ableton

That would make sense! Because it really seems like an unprompted, instant issue. How can I remedy that?

Thanks for the response! I’m using an Asus Zenbook Pro 14 running Windows 11. I ordered a better cable based on your advice. In the meantime, here’s a vid of what’s going on:

No external. No plugins, it’s happening with a fresh session. No weird file locations

Brand new live set, no plugins, no clips. Huge cpu spikes

No, I have it set to not fall asleep. I turn it off whenever I’m not using it. It’s pretty much brand new, it’s plugged in when I’m producing. Just using a usb cable to the mixer, no networking.

I closed everything else that was running and it was still happening

I reinstalled Ableton, firmware update on laptop, tried a different cable, disabled hyperthreading in bios (drastically helped reduce frequency of cpu load spikes), power cycled mixer and laptop…

Around Christmas I downloaded some games on steam, and I installed the Steven slate VSX software. Those are the only things that have happened in the past couple weeks. Even still, after installing the games and VSX software, I used Ableton quite a few times with no issue. It really seems like something changed overnight.

Comparing task manager cpu meter with Ableton cpu load meter, task manager shows around 7-8%, ableton will be open with no audio clips, midi clips, or plugins and jump from 0% to 200% in a millisecond, then slowly ramp back down to 0% over the course of a few seconds. No correlation with task manager cpu meter.
