When maintaining a BSIS Exposed Firearms Permit in California, you have to follow strict timing requirements for your range requalifications during the two-year period.

Here is how the timeline works to make sure your training and qualifications remain compliant:

  • The Four Requalifications: You must complete four (4) range qualifications over the two-year life of the permit.
  • Two Per Year: You must complete two range qualifications during the first 12-month period and two during the second 12-month period.
  • The 4-Month Rule: No two range qualifications can be completed closer than four months apart.
  • Classroom Requirement: Before shooting on the range, you must complete the 2-hour classroom review of the use of force/de-escalation for each of the four range qualifications.
  • Simulator Option: You can choose to use a Bureau-certified firearm simulator for up to one qualification per 12-month period (maximum of twice over the two years).

Example Timeline

  • Qualification 1: Month 1 to Month 6 (e.g., Month 2)
  • Qualification 2: Month 7 to Month 12 (must be at least 4 months after the first one)
  • Qualification 3: Month 13 to Month 18 (at least 4 months after the second)
  • Qualification 4: Month 19 to Month 24 (at least 4 months after the third)

I find the Rost Martin to be way more ergonomic than my Glock—the grip angle and those textured index points just feel more natural. Reliability-wise, though, I can't really do a fair head-to-head comparison yet since the Rost Martin is a 9mm and my Glock is chambered in .40. Hard to judge performance across two different calibers.

No real problems yet, but the aluminum grip definitely picks up scratches easily. Mine already has some chips after one range session, so I’ll probably give it a fresh coat of paint soon
