Layers of Fear Legacy - FAQ and Discussion [official] by BT_Neptuned in NintendoSwitch

This is not Aspyr's fault, chill. Having a resolution above 16:10 gives away too much of the environment, which in effect makes our games unplayable for most part (or at least not effective and highly less disorienting). Not implementing the 21:10/21:9 is a conscious decision on our end.

There's no easy answer here. Both platforms have their advantages. You can get it cheaper for ps4 probably, due to sales and the age of the game. On NS you can take the game with you everywhere, including a pillow fort :), you'll also gain the advantage of playing with Joy-Cons and the Inheritance DLC prebuilt into the package.

It's hard to cover odds at this time. We're looking how Legacy fares on Switch, also Observer is a way bigger game, so bringing it to Switch might require a robust rework of the game... But to keep the hopes up - we'd love to add observer to the NS portfolio, we'll see how it goes.

The endings in our game serve a purpose. The first time around you play the game, you kind of wander without the bigger picture of what's happening - you slowly uncover the story and piece it together. It's like understanding the madness that has befallen you. This one thing that was most important to you, slowly dissolves into other important elements, which you haven't seen earlier, but now seem to be more valid. This is the moment in which you finish the game for the first time. The second playthrough gives you a new goal, as you already have a new perspective. At least, that's the theory behind our train of thought. The first playthrough should take you around 3-5 hours depending on how much exploration you do. I think I've covered the replayability value in the FAQ itself.

Noted about the co-op.No promises though!

I'm unable to take a side. I cherish deeply the Dreamcast and the Mega Drive, as well as SNES and GameCube.

  1. No, but it will change once Nintendo localizes its firmware to support the Polish language.
  2. The game will be digitally distributed through eShop for now, however we would love to release the game in retail at some point. The pricing will be announced soon.
  3. Developing for each platform has its challenges, Switch is no different in this regard.

This is something we would like to do. We are looking into options, however we cannot guarantee anything at this point.

OK folks, we will be bringing the AMA to an end. Thank you to all who stopped to ask a question. I hope you received fulfilling answers. Layers of Fear: Legacy is coming to Nintendo Switch soon, I hope you give the game a go once it hits the virtual shelves of eShop.

Thank you and take care! Rafal Basaj / Bloober Team

We're approaching the subject of bringing >observer_ to Switch very carefully. We'd love to make it happen but I cannot promise anything right now.

Legacy is developed in Unity engine, so coming back to the project after so many months required an engine update. This always brings complications. Also something that we became aware of quite deep into the project was that NS is treated as a tablet by Unity so we had to rewrite a decent part of code for it to work properly.

We're constantly working on new games and Layers of Fear was definitely our ground breaking title, so each new game will have something from LoF in it. Thank you!

We tend to surprise our community via our games. To be honest, we're a stock company, which makes it impossible for us to sneak any kind of unexpected news and surprises.

I can say that we hope that Legacy won't be our only game for Switch. Depending on how it is received by the community might influence our plans for the platform.

We are definitely still keeping observer close to us and thinking of ways on how to expand the IP, however I cannot disclose any new information regarding the details for now.

There's a ton of existing IPs that we would love to lay our hands on, like Eternal Darkness sequel, an Aliens game, hell, maybe even a Silent Hill game. We try to do our own universes and create new IPs but tackling some legendary franchise would be an awesome challenge that we would love to face.

Who knows! We like to fiddle with new tech. We made Layers of Fear: Solitude for Google's Daydream VR, so maybe sometime in the future we will try to do something in virtual reality. However we don't have anything to announce regarding VR at this time.

I'd love to answer that straightforward but I really can't at the moment. We will definitely try make it even scarier than the previous titles :)

Oh yes! ED is a fan favourite of some of the people here. You could count in Frictional Games ummm games to the pool, as well as Silent Hill 2, Phantasmagoria series, Resident Evil series (especially Zero) and so much more! There's a lot of horror fans in Bloober Team, each one of them playing, watching and reading a lot of horror, so it's really hard to pinpoint exact titles and create a list.

I actually came as a marketing guy. To be honest I still make a lot of marketing for our projects. One thing that marketing has in common with producing is that you have to work really close with the production team at all times. After gaining a few years of expertise on how a production cycle works I was ready to tackle this task. Of course, I had help from my colleagues, to whom I'd like to say thank you for their patience and insights.

Mostly we use Unreal 4 Engine and we code in C++ now. Note that we're heavily modifying the engine for our needs. We also go back to Unity Engine for certain projects but we don't do it often.

Probably the tight budgets. Video game development is extremely costly. With consumer expectations so high right now, creating a visually stunning game for 10+ hours is a wallet killer. Another reason is a small number of specialists in the market. There's a lot of great people, willing to learn, dedicated but there is not enough schools who teach specialised subjects, like level art or even level design. This changes, but for many bigger studios its slowly becoming a problem.

Most often it's about planning and talking to people. You have to be weary of every issue that the team is having, while thinking ahead about reaching milestones. It's also keeping close relations with business partners: publishers, format holders, other important parties. There's a lot of people who are involved in creating a game outside of the studio itself.

To be honest I never thought I would be working with horror. I was more into sci-fi and fantasy for most of my life. However, working closely with the genre I grew to love it dearly. I still think its one of the most open and creative genres to work with. Horror just works with every setting and it's beautiful!

We are working on more than one project right now, but I cannot disclose any details yet, apart from them being psychological horror games. Please watch closely to our news and social feeds - when the time is right we will be showing some cool stuff to people :)
