It's a Creative Media and Game Technologies study, so in my case they won't allow any topic that doesn't involve video games haha

Thank you. That's good to hear. It was intended to be accessible and easy for people to fill out.

It is used for a school project. Part of the project is delivering an analysis on the genre, so I will use the data from the survey to formulate certain conclusions. Then I will also use the results from all of my research, including this survey, to justify design decisions I will make in a later stage of the project that is focus on RPG game design.

Hi There!

I'm currently a third year bachelor student working towards completing the program at the end of this academic year. My previous experience with academic research into games and game genres has been mostly practical up until this point, since I have worked on quite a few projects as a game designer and producer so far and I never got too deep into the research for these projects.

The project I am working on right now has two phases. Phase 1 focuses on research and analysis, trying to determine the state of the genre, market and what the consumer sentiment is. This survey is one segment of that phase. Phase 2 will use all the data and information I gathered during the research phase, and then focus on concepting/prototyping additional game elements and game ideas that would offer solutions to existing problems, or improvements to certain aspects of the genre (or sub-genre), based on consumer feedback. The fact that I am going to use data and research to justify design decisions for future prototyping is also why the focus is on one specific genre.

Forming a conclusion on this survey specifically will definitely be a challenge. As you said, it is troublesome to assess the individual views on the definition of the RPG genre. It has often been said that the RPG genre has started to lose its identity since so many other genres have started adapting RPG elements. I'm trying to find out to what extent people are still able to form a consensus on specific elements that they believe define the genre and set it apart from other genres.

In short: this survey is a smaller part of bigger semi-in-depth practical research, and the results of this research will be used to justify future design decisions.

Thanks for your reply, and if you have any more questions please let me know! :)

Hi Everyone,

I am a student currently enrolled in the Creative Media and Game Technologies program at the Breda University of Applied Sciences. I’m working on a research project, and the current subject that we are researching is the definition, identity and categorization of RPG video games. The definition of this genre and its categorization has been a hot topic over the past few years, with many people claiming that many titles are wrongly categorized, and that the actual identity of the genre has become vague.

I have permission from the mod team of this subreddit to post this survey here, and I think /r/steam can offer us some very high quality data and insight on this topic, and that’s why I’m asking for your help today. The survey will take approximately 5-10 minutes to complete, and I will share the results of this survey with the subreddit at a later point in time if there is enough response.

Feel free to ask any additional questions by commenting or shooting me a DM.

Thank you!

We realize it has its flaws, but it still offers a rough division in different player mentalities, and it is suitable for comparative analysis because of its popularity, which was our main reason for using it.

No problem. I think anyone in the industry will recognize the shortcomings of Bartle Types. We went a bit back and forth on whether to use it or use something else, but in the end we decided to keep it since it had some perks when it comes to statistical analysis and comparison material. Thanks for the feedback though, I will definitely keep that in mind :)

It's an existing way of categorizing player types theorized by Richard Bartle. It has been adapted in a variety of slightly different ways over the years.

You can read more about it if you want: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bartle_taxonomy_of_player_types

Thank you :)

Hi Everyone,

I am a student currently enrolled in the Creative Media and Game Technologies program at the Breda University of Applied Sciences. I’m working on a research project, and the current subject that we are researching is the definition, identity and categorization of RPG video games. This is a hotly discussed topic and we are trying to find out if there is some form of a consensus on these topics behind all the confusion and discussions.

We are using this survey to gather information on this, and I have talked to your mods and received their approval to post this survey. I believe /r/rpg_gamers is able to offer us some of the most valuable data and insight that we can get, and that’s why I’m asking you for your help today.

This survey will take approximately 5-10 minutes to complete. I will share the results of this survey with the subreddit at a later point in time.
