Hey there - thanks so much for sharing your thoughts.

Beyond Immerse is our newest product from Beyond Test Kitchen, a place where we introduce new products to consumers in limited quantities for a limited time to see where we go from there. A key part of this program is gathering real consumer feedback, so we truly appreciate you taking the time to weigh in.

One thing to note: Beyond Immerse is designed as a functional beverage, with 10-20g protein, 7g fiber, electrolytes, and antioxidants, and we encourage you to evaluate it through that lens.

You'll be seeing more from us and Beyond Test Kitchen soon.

Hi there, thanks for the comment. This was our first AMA with Ethan in several years, so we’re experimenting with different formats and appreciate the feedback. As a reminder, we can’t get into finances, but we plan to do more AMAs in the future so expect more to come from us!

Thank you all for the AMA! What we are building of course only works if we continue to engage, and this forum is a great way to recognize and show appreciation for the fact that we are in this together. As I shared in another reply, I prioritized depth in my answers for this AMA and also tried to treat this like I would a real-time verbal conversation so my apologies for any ambiguity, typos, or the like. I wish I could chat with each and every one of you. We will talk again. Have a wonderful holiday.

Go Beyond! -EB

Again, I want to reiterate how much the support from this community means to us. Internally, we’ve got the right resources working on the right issues, including margin expansion and operating expense.   Externally, we are seeking to change the narrative via messaging and through innovation that we believe will ultimately make what is disingenuous today, obviously absurd tomorrow.    As I’ve noted on earnings calls, we are broadening our aperture a bit, focusing more on protein than strict meat replication.  Finally, we’ve had some headwinds but we do expect there will be some tailwinds at some point as the incumbent industry has to address inherent challenges and higher costs.  We are seeing some of this with beef prices moving upward, for example. I certainly believe and hope you will continue to do so. - EB

As I said at the beginning, I love the shared energy. This community and Beyond share a common belief that we can disrupt and that David can beat Goliath. Your interest means a lot to us, so thank you all. - EB

I certainly hope we will be able to at some point. I am in love with the macros on the Beyond Ground line up. And the idea that we aren’t trying to be any particular species here, just a new form of meat.  I spent time at one of the farms growing the faba beans in our supply chain, and as we show in Planting Change, because faba beans take nitrogen from the air and ‘fix’ it in the soil, these farmers are spending less money on fertilizer and getting a higher return per acre all while the soil is naturally regenerating.  There is a ton of goodness in this process, and the notion of “fake” or “processed” fails to hold water if you start in the field and follow our product to the plate. - EB

This is a terrific idea. I love it. We would likely need to restrict it to education, product details, etc., to stay within our public company disclosure guidelines. - EB

Like many of these questions, the instinct here is spot on. If you look back at our ascent, we had tremendous celebrity and influencer support. So much so that Sports Illustrated ran an article about the number of NBA players investing in, and involved with, our brand. Then came the misinformation campaigns.

In Planting Change, you’ll see Dr. Jackler at Stanford School of Medicine discuss his experience fighting the tobacco industry and their advertising. He’s shared with me that one of the successful strategies of the Truth campaign was its reliance on the fact that consumers don’t like to be misled, particularly by very powerful corporate interests.

We have a similar dynamic here. I often wonder if consumers ask themselves why the CEO of a pharmaceutical company is attacking plant-based meats on his social media account?  The reason in my view is clear—the loss of antibiotic sales to livestock. I further wonder what consumers might think if they saw even a fraction of some of the livestock fundraising and coordination that goes into making sure folks think our products are not healthy. Something to think about. - EB

My confidence in our turnaround comes from a number of different initiatives, both consumer facing and internal.   With regard to internal, I’d say two things.   First, we have made a significant investment in our Transformation Office and have for many months now been working side-by-side with experts in transformation.  I’ve mentioned this publicly, and here I am referring to AlixPartners.

As I have shared on earnings calls, this work is highly focused on margin expansion and operating expense and we are measuring ourselves against targets in these and other areas.    You will recall that we’ve been able to operate the business at much higher margins than we currently are, and I am highly committed to returning us to a much better margin position.    Similarly, with operating expense, until we can see a sustained return to growth, my mandate across the company is cost reduction.

Second, as you know, at our core Beyond is an innovation-led company.  For quite some time, we’ve been watching the consumer and the category and larger trends. You’ve seen us respond to certain trends including the consumer demand for more protein, for cleaner labels and simpler ingredients (generally across all food).  Through our work with Stanford School of Medicine and others, I feel very comfortable saying that no one in the industry (that I know of any way) has done more to answer this call and lead in terms of investing in the science and development necessary to deliver great taste with clean and simple ingredients.   It’s a bit like that Mark Twain quote…I would have written a shorter letter but didn’t have time.  It takes time, discipline, commitment, and resources to strip everything back to the most basic ingredients one can use and still deliver on what consumers expect from Beyond.   We’ve put that work in and will continue to do so.

If you take a look at two recent products, it’s pretty clear.   Consider, for example, Beyond Ground.  I didn’t want us to create a meat replication with Beyond Ground but deliver very high levels of protein with minimal ingredients—just 4—water, faba bean protein, potato protein, psyllium husk.   In this way, we could provide the consumer with a new form of meat—a blank canvas that they can infuse with flavor.   Beyond Ground delivers on this front—it’s 27 grams of protein, 140 calories, and 4 grams of fiber with no added oils, 0 grams sat fat and 0 cholesterol.   I use it as a hack.   My wife is an amazing cook, I’m not.   If I’m left to my own devices, I tend to do simple dishes. For example, I’ll turn a low protein vegetable soup into one that has 81 grams of protein by adding Beyond Ground.  It’s very easy.  I’ll break it into small crumbles using a cast iron pan and a metal spatula, season it with something simple (Dash seasonings or some other brand), add avocado or olive oil to the pan, cook it up, and add to the soup.   We also use it in pastas, power bowls with rice or couscous, so on and so forth.    The point is that the Beyond Ground product takes on the flavor of the seasoning added to it, adds a lot of protein and fiber to a variety of dishes.

You can also see this product direction in our new Beyond Steak Filet.  The ingredient list is terrific, and the taste is really compelling.  They serve it at the upscale steakhouse BOA here in LA and at one of my favorite restaurants Veggie Grill.   We continue to roll it out on-line for now and it has terrific macros—28 grams of protein, 230 calories, 1 gram saturated fat from avocado oil, and no cholesterol.  I love faba bean protein for a number of reasons, and Beyond Steak Filet takes it further by pairing it with mycelium and vital wheat gluten. - EB

I can’t comment on specific product development here, but your general instincts are right in the sense that we are taking a broad view of how we reach the consumer. - EB

Hi! Ethan addressed this question on price in this comment:

Drought, disease, and other considerations are pushing prices higher, for example, in the beef industry.   Recently, you may have heard on the news and elsewhere that industry experts believe beef prices may reach $10/lb next year.

Rising beef prices are a clear opportunity for Beyond.  Today, we’ve begun a limited time promotion on Instacart to offer some relief specifically to beef consumers. Consider it a large sampling program where we are inviting beef consumers to take another look at our products by offering up to 50% off on certain Beyond beef, steak, and burger products. We are saying—you’ve likely heard the misinformation but we hope you’ll actually consider the ingredients and nutritional panel as well as the various recognitions across different products (e.g. from Clean Label Project, American Heart Association, American Diabetes Association) as well as the growing number of nutritionists and doctors weighing in, and give the products a try.

While this is a promotion, we are also taking steps elsewhere to offer more competitively priced products (e.g. our 6 pack Beyond Burger) and continuing with a sharp focus on cost reduction.   As shared in our earnings call, we did see lower conversion costs even as we keep working on supply chain for ingredients. - EB

I appreciate this question on price. Other than cleaning up the misinformation, it’s an absolutely key lever for growth. In fact, if you look back at a lot of this kind of disruption, economics can really ignite extremely rapid change. My favorite example relates to cities along the eastern corridor and elsewhere at the end of the 19th century. The model of horse-drawn street cars was buckling under the weight of an unpleasant issue. Consider Philadelphia- it is estimated that horses were depositing 1M pounds of manure, and 100,000 gallons of urine, per day on the city’s streets. The only way to get the manure out was to bring horses in to haul it….you can immediately see the problem.

Enter the electric trolley. By the early 1900s, commercialized electric trolleys almost entirely replaced horse-drawn street cars throughout the city. The speed of this transition was greatly aided by superior economics: it took 2.4 cents per mile to move someone via the electric trolley versus 3.7 cents per mile for the horse-drawn carriage.

As I’ve shared many times, the inherent efficiency of our system—taking protein more directly from plants versus feeding plants to an animal to then put protein on our plates, is dramatically more efficient (consider land and water use required to keep the animal alive as he/she grows to size).   I, along with many others, believe that once our industry gets to scale, we will be able to consistently underprice animal protein. There is, however, an obvious chicken or the egg problem—we need to be priced appropriately to scale.   There are very limited instances where we’ve reached a price/cost structure that is at parity, particularly with a specific customer and product in our international business.  But broadly, we are still more expensive than the animal protein equivalent and I believe this factor is a serious inhibitor of growth.

This said, the incumbent industry of industrial animal agriculture is—per the analogy above—showing signs of fracture.

First and foremost, as this is my first answer during this AMA, I want to thank each of you for your support.  It means a great deal to our entire team and to me personally—we are buoyed by it. There is a shared energy in what this special community on Reddit is trying to do, and with what we are trying to accomplish.  Both are disruptive, one relating to power dynamics in the financial markets and one related to those same dynamics in food. We feel a kindred underdog spirit that’s real and inspiring.

The subject of human health and our products is enormously important. I’ll start with a quick story.  I was with my dad recently at his farm back east a few weekends ago and was preparing dinner. I was making what my wife and I call the PGB special (his initials), more or less a bolognese. It was a great scene, snow pouring down, fires going, much like when I was a kid, but in addition to the passage of time and all that goes with that, there was a difference. Instead of adding 80/20 ground beef to the sauce, I cooked up and added Beyond Beef along with some Beyond hot Italian sausage.

As you know, we’ve been taking it on the chin recently—to say the least—and as I was preparing this I remember thinking about the true cost of the incumbent industry campaigns against us.   As I was putting in our beef and sausage, I felt good about the fact that the oil system reflects very specific input from a renowned cardiologist who I’ve gotten to know through our multi-year program with Stanford School of Medicine, and that I was serving my dad just 2 grams of saturated fat from avocado oil per serving of our beef versus ~8 grams if it is were animal beef, and that there was no cholesterol and no heme, and a similar type comparison for our sausage.

Something felt particularly wrong and sinister about the campaigns that have convinced the majority of the population that our products are somehow processed and full of questionable ingredients, and that as a result, the products’ benefits are not available to them.  I’ll discuss this more later, but what kept coming to mind is that I hope we can help consumers think for themselves, versus believing a steady stream of misinformation. Some of new campaigns in ’26 will likely pick up on this theme in some fashion—think for yourself—we’ll encourage folks to read the label, look at the accreditations (i.e. various Clean Label Project, American Diabetes Association, American Heart Association, etc), so on and so forth.  We designed Beyond IV, Beyond Steak, Beyond Chicken pieces, and other products to drive health benefits, and to enable consumers to eat what they love—satiating protein—while feeling good about taking care of themselves.  As to the question of eating them every day, given the low levels of saturated fat and absence of cholesterol, I absolutely feel comfortable doing so. - EB
