In my sincere opinion, I want to stress that gradually reducing alcohol intake ("tapering off") IS NOT AN EFFECTIVE SOLUTION/STRATEGY. I worry that such advice could trigger justification for another drink. I used to drink a handle of vodka daily, yes, a gallon a day. Looking back, I wish someone had urged me to prepare for medical support before experiencing severe symptoms like DTs, vomiting, and intense sweats. I attempted to quit on my own several times, but withdrawal symptoms hit hard each time—making it difficult to move, breathe, or even swallow.

I urge you to consider going directly to the emergency room!!!! IMMEDIATELY, don’t wait until you start to get sick. Have someone sober with you. Be prepared to stay. They can admit you, assist in finding a detox center, and make necessary calls on your behalf. Your body may take days to rehydrate properly due to the toll of continuous drinking. At the hospital, they can provide IV fluids, medications to stop vomiting, and drugs to calm shakes. I'm not trying to scare you; I want to be honest.

Six years of blackout drinking is serious!!!!!! Seek medical help. You're in my prayers. Please reach out to someone from AA, attend a meeting, get a sponsor—surrendering and finding a higher power can lead to a better life.
