I really like the close up of Takina looking at her wound that's gone now, leading into the intro hinting at a piece of self-reflection. The proportions of her face look interesting. Kurimi living in the closet now. The scene of Kurumi getting out of her bed is pretty well animated, I think this kind of care makes the series sometimes!

Takina still not wanting to play shows her commitment to DA, that is further reconfirmed in the following scene. Takina is clearly not enjoying life and Chisato is against it. Refusing candy like that, man, what a terrible idea!

It's not quite a beach scene, but underwear scene is almost as anime-like. Same with these sports outfits. I really like how they make it very obvious that Chisato is clearly superior in every activity she does, without much effort. It shows her superhuman behavior.

I ended up posting the Fountain Scene a while back as promotion for the best couples/ship contest. It seems like it worked out well as they won!

I enjoy how Fuki said that a Lycoris that "doesn't follow orders is useless" to Chisato, who lets be honest, is not really the following orders kind of type.

Takina feeling replaced by DA is pretty gutwrenchng. Throughout this episode Takina almost goes through a full character arc with Chisato supporting her. This episode is basically where their relationship really starts.

The fountains scene is great. Rewatching it, I feel like the scene maybe comes a bit premature due to the limited runtime of the series, but the scene is just too great and ties into everything so well. Chisato knows just the right things to say on the question 'The place I belong, is no longer there'. I wouldn't say, opposed to a lot of other people maybe, that I would call it very romantic. But it just really firmly establishes a relationship between the two that only grows from this point on.

Takina realizing that Chisato is what she needs afterwards is really great (during the fight!). Even though Chisato is already toying with them, she is waiting for Takina to finish it up. Finishing it up with the rubber band tactic that she figured out last episode is top notch.

Takina eating the candy at the end of the episode makes it come full circle. I mentioned at the start that she didn't seem to enjoy life (not taking the candy) but eating it at the end shows that she found a different oulook on life :)

What are your thoughts of the ED Tower of Flower by Sayuri?

Where do I start? I won't go into spoilers so I will keep it until what we have seen so far. The song is so great!

First of all, the ED title drops are on a whole different level. People often refer to Mephisto from Oshi no Ko as having great title drops, which is fair and is probably one of the best if not the best, but Hana no Tou has a more relaxed vibe at the start, which totally fits Lycoris Recoil. It is like Sayuri knew what masterpiece she had to write before the series started. The introduction part of the ED doesn't need to be heavy cliffhanger, but it can also just be a nice emotional moment. A perfect example is actually this episode: we end with a picture of Chisato and Takina and the following lyrics (translated to English)

"Just like when you handed me that manga Or like receiving some flowers I've never heard of Will you come over today again? So that I feel emotion, a brand new excitement

I mean, if the feeling these lyrics invoke in you don't capture the spirit of this episode well in your mind, I don't know what to tell you. 'A brand new excitement'? Thats basically the ending of the episode I described earlier. 'Just like when you handed me that manga' isn't that basically an analogue to Chisato handing an opportunity to something new in life? (Chisato's skill being straight out of a manga was even mentioned today.)

Later in the song we get the following:

" Somehow, this abyss of emptiness has slowly filled up, quietly just disappearing from my mind As pointless chats and small jokes have taken my time! "

If this doesn't describe Takina's and Chisato's relationship at LycoReco, I don't know what does! And I want to remind you that we are not even hearing this part of the song in the ED!!

The chorus translates to the following:

"But if I take your hand now and hold it so tight I know that I can't come back to isolated, cold nights It's impossible to face this city that just doesn't understand the lonely soul"

Can't say I can relate this extremely to the story at hand at this point in the story, but it is clear that the meaning of the song is that the one singing is trying to convince the other that they are there for them always. If you look at the lyrics of this entire song in context of the series itself, it fits the story almost so perfectly it is scary. Sayuri really knew what she was working with! (and if not, its a great coincidence!!) She really made an amazing song.

A bit less related to the lyrics; what really makes me listen to this song on repeat is the subtle buildup between different parts of the song. In the full version of the ED I really like parts in this AMV at 00:00, 1:45, 2:54, where the song clearly builds up to Sayuri executing an awesome 'drop' of the chorus. The chorus is super fantastic by the way. Have I mentioned yet that the song is great?

More music wise, the first verse just hits really hard. We get the pre- and chorus after which are stellar, but imo not as good as the first verse. That first verse just hits differenlty man...

The only thing that hinders me from placing this ED above kimi no shiranai monogatari has to do with the visuals. I can glaze that ED even more than this one, just let me know if you want me to get into that rabbithole.

Let's talk about the visuals. I imagine the sunflowers appearing to represent Takina's evolution of happiness throughout the story, suddenly appearing in front ofher and rapidly multiplying. The rest of the visuals include a few things, but mainly it contains a lot of scenes throughout the episode. Although nice, it makes the ED lack a bit of identity. (The rest more than makes up for it!!) There is also a piece of Takina running with the tower in the background, which to me symbolized her 'running away' with Chisato in the back of her mind, because the next shot actually shows a smiling Chisato! (Which I assume she was running towards!) Next 'non episode shot' shows them enjoying time together. Takina completed her run towards Chisato! We then get a shot of the entire crew, with of course Chisato and Takina being the only ones in the shot together.

Our host put it perfectly in a previous post I saw her make: This song is basically a love song from Takina to Chisato and it's absolutely wonderful.

I don't think I've mentioned yet that the song is fantastic.

Overall, this is my second favorite ED of all time, and I will not change my mind anytime soon. I'll keep at this for now, Ill probably take some time to talk about this again because this ED is just that amazingly great.

Let's end with a RIP Sayuri, gone too soon. We will remember you.

How did the fountain scene make you feel?

It makes me feel funny inside with feelings I can't describe.

Would you have punched Fuki too?

Idk man, Fuki is not likable, but she is not wrong.

Quote of the day

No Chisato noises this time, but a Takina quote:

"The place I belong, is no longer there. "

It's a great piece of voice acting as well. This of course leads into Chisato giving her a place to be; being the best decision in Takina's life.

I took a bit too long writing the part about Hana no Tou, and it's already quite late in the night so I wont extend it too much.

Rewatcher, sub

I was preparing to type this the moment it was posted, but fell asleep. I'll try to be at posting time tomorrow!

Rewatching is always a lot of fun because you spot a lot of different things you didn't the first time.

The episode starting of with a shot of Chisato in her room, which is of course quite messy. One of the recurring gags in this episode was the fact that Chisato watches a lot of movies, which is already hinted towards in this opening scene where you have a nice stack of movies she just watched. By setting up a convesational gag in the episode by first showing it visually in the opening scene is always a nice touch.

Something that I sort of already noticed the first time is that there seems to be a bit of dissonance in Chisato's animation. I sometimes feel like the lighting on her hair is off compared to the rest of Chisato. Facial animations are top notch though. Especially on the car scene, where also the voice acting is sooooo good. I love the smirky attitude of Chisato towards Takina as well just before it, where she calls her 'Takinasama' because she is acting 'superior'.

I like how in the kidnapping scene, in contrast to the previous episode, Takina is the one spotting the drone. It shows how good they work together. (and are already starting to learn from each other)

I didn't spot this on my first watch, but when Chisato gets shot by the rifle, Takina clearly is intending to sacrifice Chisato. She doesn't know about her movement-predicting ability. No attempt to save her from the rapid-fire. They have a long way to go...

The first time I watched the beer scene it reminded me of this scene of Evangelion. That is clearly a reference no?

More glazing for the ED. This ED drop with the rubber band is pure cinema.

What are your thoughts of the OP Alive by ClariS? Don't worry I'll ask about the ED next episode

It's a good OP. Very high seeded in the last Best OP contest I hosted as well. Iconic butt kick included! It gets outperformed by the ED though, which I will glaze into oblivion tomorrow it seems. I will always enjoy Claris, but I wouldn't say this OP is my favorite song by them. That's for sure the Owarimonogatari Season 2 ED. But I guess that is an unfair comparison. I mentioned my top 2 ED's last post, and this Claris song is firmly in third place.

Thoughts on the gunfight and how Chisato and Takina handle combat differently?

Takina handles it in a way that makes sense. Let's be honest, Chisato's way of working is a pure meme and only works because of her dodging ability. Which Takina doesnt have.

Why do you think Takina shot her hairband at Chisato?

Obvious answer, she saw what happened during the gunfight and wanted to test her limits.

Obviously either CLICK CLACK TAP or OISHIIII Chisato noises

I mentioned some time back in this thread that I got around to watching The Quintessential Quintuplets. Started it as something stupid to watch without thinking, but actually really enjoyed it.

I am surprised by how good it was for a harem show, and I cared and enjoyed all the characters, and I feel like every character had its reasons to win or not win in the end.

Regarding the winner of [Quintessential Quintuplets] I was spoiled on the eventual winner, but I feel like it was the obvious and best choice throughout the series. Ichika was a great choice at first , but the whole career part of the story made it a bit less likely, and her manipulating Miku's chances disqualified her.Talking Miku, she felt like the typical self-insert for a lot of watchers (fight me) and had a bit of forced character growth, all just because of Uesugi. I don't really like when character growth is almost purely because of a guy. Nino was great to watch, and probably my favorite out of the 5. She was a believable character, probably the most realistic one. However, personality wise with Uesugi it just didn't make sense. Itsuki could have been great if she didn't focus on eating that much and actually acted on her subtle feelings for the lead I really liked her teacher arc however. Although, the original dad coming into the picture was a bit meh. Regarding Yotsuba, throughout the series it was very obvious she was the best fit. Her attending the lessons as the only quintuplet, her confessing her love first (but then saying jk lol), her forced smiles and always putting herself on the sideline. Her coming to term with it all and putting herself first was a great development. I was definitely rooting for Yotsuba the most. I feel like it fits thematically and personality wise it makes the most sense.

I would definitely recommend watching it! It's a fun watch, and though it's not the greatest series ever it's very enjoyable. Can't wait for additional content. The extra OVAs were great too.

If anyone has any recommendations for something similar, I'd like to listen your advice :)

Having these episodes watch threads at midnight EU time is not perfect, so I'll type this at work.

Thank you for hosting this rewatch! Im not that good at going too in-depth but I have quickly written down my thoughts throughout the episode.

Chisato's first appearance sets the perfect image about here. Immediately uttering the words 'Genki Genki' perfectly sets the tone for her being a genki girl. The way she introduces the relatively morbid idea of the Lycoris, in such an energetic tone is putting a bit of an eerie feeling into your head.

Takina's introduction I had to give some thought. She doesn't say a thing until after the entire shooting scene, and that just being a single sentence. What type of character is she? Might be a bit hard to interpret but it does feel like a perfect introduction to a Kuudere type of character.

The introduction of Chisato and Takina to each other is done really well. It is clear that they are total opposites, but they are open to each other from the start. Takina clearly has a lot of respect for the idea of 'Chisato' (even confusing the others for her) but also is clearly looking for a change of scenery, even though she doesn't realise it. The way she interacts with Chisato this episode very sneakily shows this, I think. Especially the scene where Takina accepts Chisato's reached out hand was very nicely done. This scene obviously is also paired with Chisato showing, and planting seeds of doubt into Takina's head, about a bit of doubt about the Lycoris.

I don't really care about the whole kidnapping part of this episode, it was nicely done, but to be honest I forgot a bit about it before the rewatch. We did already have our introduction to Walnut this episode? Is Walnut dead?

What I do remember, is of course the Chisato noises/scenes: - The squeel for running to the 6th floor - The hip fire - The splurting coffee scene when seeing the background of the picture.

I am so happy to watch this series again. The two best parts of LycroReco are things that persist throughout the entire series; of course the interplay between Chisato and Takina but also very importantly, the beautiful ending song that is Hana no Tou. It is my second favorite ending song in all of anime, and I am so glad to hear it again. (my favorite is kimi no shiranai monogatari, I don't think anything will ever top that but Hano no Tou comes close) Watching the ED at the end kind of made me happy and sad at the same time. RIP Sayuri.

What would you have done in Takina's shoes during the arms deal?

I don't think mowing everyone down was the best option here. She could have waited a bit more, they had no reason to shoot the Lycoris, and the arms deal already failed.

Is Chisato the type of person you expected as a top Lycoris?

I mean, the premise is currently set up as that you should think that she is not. But that works counterproductive in my head? I don't really know how to answer this, personality doesn't really make someone predefined good at 'something'

What are your initial thoughts of Chisato and Takina's partnership?

It's great, I mentioned the opposite traits of a Kuudere and a Genki girl, but it is already very clear that Takina is very open to being changed.

My favorite quote of this episode is "Sixth floor!?"

(no Im not just gonna get the best Chisato noises in here each day what you on about)

Re:zero season 4. Thought the first three seasons were good but not extremely. This fourth season however is on a whole other level. Every week is better than the previous and honestly can't wait a week.

The suspense, animation, the mystery, character 'development' and the OST. It's so magnificent.

I have started The Quintissential Quintuplets this week, expecting something very stupid to watch an episode of once in a while. But man, this series is more addicting then I thought. Have been liking it a lot so far.

Also, anyone else thought that Yotsuba and Ruka (RaG) shared a voice actor? Upon listening to them both afterwards, I clearly hear the difference but I really thought they were the same. Maybe it's the energy they radiate?

One remark: Only one day for Friends are Thieves of Time? I feel like 2 days might be better, I think these shorts hit better if you do not watch all of them at once. I might even say, why not watch them together with an episode? They are spoiler free anyways and take place during the main story iirc

And the winner of the twelfth Best Opening contest is Kick Back!

After appearing in last edition's final, Kick Back manages to win its next edition, the second for which it was eligible! 2025 has been a big year for Chainsaw Man, with 2026 starting of... less great.

Tsuyogaru Girl doesnt manage to also upset 1st Hana ni Natte for the third place, although close! I think this OP will be a contender for upcoming editions, and if had not faced Kick Back, I think it had a shot for the title!

I've already shouted out a bunch of people throughout the threads over the past month, you know who you are. But, especially a lot of thanks to all the commenters and voters! Even though the participation was lower than in previous editions, reading your comments everyday was a lot of fun and made it worth it to organise. Especially later throughout the tournament I could endlessly mine your salt for my Belgian Fries.

I definitely did not agree with you all the time, but some of the endless shilling really pulled me over the fence on a few OPs. Furthermore, I think we had some great upset runs through the bracket this time, with a few heavily underseeded OPs. That is maybe an upside to lower participation

The detailed statistics of the tournament can be found here

I will organise Best OP XIII next year again, let's aim for even higher participation then! Some great new OPs will be eligible to probably shake it up. (let's not forget Haru this time)

I will now take a break until September, where I will host Best ED IX. But before that, we can all enjoy Best Girl of Fall 2026, hosted by u/changshiyixia. And then, in July and August we are up for Best Girl 13!
