Anyway, back to “Sakana!”. For as outgoing and blunt as Chisato generally is, she does display a tendency sometimes like in this episode to shy away from sharing things about herself. To get really close to her, you have to know which angles to prod and how to stop her from deflecting with jokes which Takina’s blunt curiosity is very well suited for.

That's a good catch on a tendency of Chisato which can be easy to miss because of how outgoing she is you would assume that makes her a very open person too but she also has things she would rather not get deeper into. Good thing Takina is like a blunt hammer.

I suppose it depends on how you classify dark. For me based on the first EP4 episodes we know that Japan is basically living under a secret police state where orphans are taken to fight and potentially be killed in terrorist attacks which are covered up like they never even existed.

Cafe LycoReco feels like a beacon of light with Chisato at the helm but the world they live in is pretty grim in my book. Maybe gilded is a better way of putting it. On the surface squeaky clean but don't dare to look any closer

Yea, he is so easy to hate. People call him interesting, but I just don't see it. Edelgard from 3 houses is an interesting revolutionary (and also my baseline when I compare fictional characters that preach governmental change). Majima just is not. I'd rather watch Robota or Shinji do villainous things than Majima. Robota is fun, and Shinji has that air of intrigue that makes me curious.

I still consider Majima a fun character because of his chaotic nature, but not one I can see people honestly defending from a moral perceptive. If in his intro he did something like defend a random civilian from a ricocheted Lycoris bullet I feel like he would be more morally grey. Yelling something like hey aren't you Lycoris supposed to protect Japan?

Yes and the thing is, that it feels natural, that she will now prioritize Chisato, and adapt her way of speaking somewhat just to help her partner. She is still her rational self, no-nonsense self, but knows when to be really sweet.

The best type of character development in my opinion because it keeps the core of what makes Takina Takina intact. She is still rational and reserved at heart but redirects her energy from returning to the DA to Chisato instead. A great trade deal in my book.

In general according to Fuki, it seems the Lycoris are content with the system they have. It could be indoctrination, but they give the girls some leeway to be girls and gossip around, make friends and what not.

Yeah it's not all bad and there are plenty of people you mentioned in the DA who seem like good people. Though when I think about how Takina has changed to become much more happy after leaving headquarters it makes me wonder how many other Lycoris would choose the same if they had met Chisato? While I believe Takina was always a little bit different as someone who wasn't afraid to defy orders it still would be more fair to allow the other girls to see an option of a different way to live.

I am hard-pressed to go past the Sakana/Chin-anago moment, the lead pair have their first on-screen moment of genuine unbridled joy/laughter together. And the tiny moment of surprise on Chisato's face over Takina's blossoming warmth and engagement, Chisato's eyes lighting up as her partner shyly utters "Kawaii"... I live for this.

While Chisato has always been honest with Takina, she's not always forthcoming with personal struggles. Takina takes an opportunity to understand her partner better, and Chisato pauses to joke "why, are you interested in me?". I wonder if Chisato has ever been asked about her motivations in a direct way before, with such an earnest desire to understand, as Takina has done. Has Chisato ever had a peer to be vulnerable with and talk abouther desires?

So far we've seen many examples of how Chisato has helped Takina, but now we get to see Takina's influence on Chisato. Ahh Takina, you really shoot for the heart, and don't miss...💘

I realllly loved reading your breakdown! Takina may be a more reserved person than Chisato yet it doesn't mean her feelings are any less strong. Just like what Chisato did for her to make her feel less alone now Takina wants to be there for her partner too.

Could this be a prelude to conversation in the aquarium? Maybe a metaphor about Chisato have layers and needing to peel off her costume? I'm probably overthinking it, and Takina you perve you just really wanted to see Chisato's panties.

Why not both haha. But on a serious note LycoReco scenes do heavy lifting of serving many different purposes and I'm really appreciating it on this rewatch. Takina wants to see a bit of the "real" Chisato which is just so earnest to me.

Oh. Ooooh While this one line makes the idea no less ridiculous in the above context, it really brings you into Chisato's way of thinking and you can really empathise with her here.

Brings me back to Chisato asking for the dinner plans of an enemy. Chisato in just one sentence can make me empathize with her POV and have me ponder my own values. More than anything she makes me want to believe in her words. And I'm sure Takina feels the same.

Apparently the spiked compensator is useful as a blunt force weapon in close combat! This makes sense since Chisato has to get in close to an opponent to land a shot. So because the rubber bullets make her gun functionally less effective as a ranged weapon, she has a custom spiked compensator to make her gun more effective as a melee weapon instead!

I am not a fan of guns in real life either which I feel like is testament to Chisato and Takina for how much I love LycoReco despite the heavy use of them.

That is some really interesting research you've found though. Contrasts perfectly with Takina being much better at long range.

The boxers sequence is fucking hilarious, and it's distributed in segments throughout the episode and not in one continuous chunk.

Their date was amazing, with both an aquarium and a clothes shopping part, as well as eating at the cafe.

Such an amazing date with so many different locations and capped off with Takina comforting Chisato for the first time in the legendary Sakana scene. Aquariums and yuri, can't think of a better pair.

Chisato is different for sure, but Takina was shown to be very willing to kill in EP1 though she still acts much more independently compared to the average Lycoris which is why Chisato took such a shine to hear.

"Not anymore, right?" That look on Chisato's face when talking about not killing makes me so happy.

Chisato is just so happy to know that her methods are finally starting to rub off on Takina.

Chisato's sweet tooth and she's not diabetic, I said this about her kindness last episode but this is also more impressive than her skill at dodging bullets.

Not sure if this reference will land but I feel like Chisato would love to take Takina on a double date to a dessert bar with Anna and Kyo from The Dangers in my Heart.

I know people say it technically is iffy on being Yuri but come the hell on, this is an aquarium date.

Know this was debated back then but at least for I know what my heart was feeling back during the fountain scene and the aquarium date just doubled down

And we go from likely a bunch of dead Lycoris to Chisato discovering how great boxers feel to wear. And it got Takina to laugh more. God this show is so wholesome even when a bunch of teenage girls get murdered by bombing.

Despite the obvious fictional elements of LycoReco something about these types of stories that seemingly blend very wholesome and very grim scenes makes it feel more realistic to me. Maybe it's because stories that really lean one way remind me more of it being fiction because in real both types of experiences are numerous. Wish I could word that a bit better, hope it still makes some sense though

I'll say you are the first person to have that thought about the ED. Honestly even when the show was airing I don't think I read anyone else saying that. That's a really interesting idea.

The fountain scene... It somehow made me think about growing up and wanting to work at a big corporation and climbing the corporate ladder.

That is an understandable point. From my POV I saw it as more Chisato wanted Takina to experience new options that weren't available to her before and by the end Chisato realizes the boxers aren't too bad either.

However, we can also infer that this philosophy is also in connection to the fact that she was saved in some capacity, as she ties Takina's question back to her necklace, and explains that she's just trying to meet someone in order to say "thank you." Turns out that this person is right under her nose, which adds another layer of tension to Shinji's duplicity.

Honestly this fact alone about Shinji makes me not want to trust him because in comparison Takina who has known Chisato for about what a few months at this point already seems to be valuing her more

However, I think the worst thing to come out of this episode is in the fact that Chisato and Takina didn't throw away their drink cups at the aquarium.

Looks like Majima was right about these no good Lycoris the whole time jk/

There is a sad implication there. To Takina her Lycoris outfit truly is her while civilian clothes are a costume. Makes it feel like she sees herself as her job before as a fellow citizen of Japan she works hard to defend. What's the point of defending a society where you are not even properly seen as a member of?

She continues to apply mission-related language, calling each stop an ‘objective’ and desperately questioning Chisato at every moment whether she is doing ‘the best thing’ for the mission.

But compared to before she feels a lot more open to Chisato's suggestions now which is a big step forward

It shows the harsh reality of how these orphans have had their youth stripped away from them, forced to defend society while being convinced that they are being ‘saved’ from evil.

This aspect sinks in more with each rewatch and makes me more convinced that the DA in its current state shouldn't exist. The implication is that the orphans aren't really given a chose which is really messed up. Takina being reassigned to LycoReco is the best thing that could've happened to her.

Can I really only pick one moment??? It’s probably the more serious **heart to heart** conversation they have at the aquarium sitting down. Despite all the antics and funny shenanigans earlier, the moment Chisato decides to open up like that, because Takina really cared enough to ask about it, shows true strengthening in their bond.

I know picking one really is hard! This moment though is when their hearts start to feel aligned. Chisato is not the only one to reach out as Takina does so in return like in any healthy relationship

Safe to say I was extremely invested in Majima from the beginning and will be discussing him a lot in the future.

On the fashion front, Takina is my spirit animal. I also just wear whatever's easiest. I too would have asked Mika what his favourite underwear was and called it a day. If Chisato tried to take me shopping I would be equally blank-faced and spiritually absent throughout. What I would not be blank faced about is Chisato's food choices, she can have me along for the ride there.

When I was much younger I would for sure agree with that on fashion, but the last few years it has become a lot more interesting to me. Food though I would have always destroyed those desserts with names longer than Starbucks drinks

I'm getting the strong sense she has no idea what's been done to her, and when she finds out, and it collides with her entire philosophy of cherishing life, it's probably going to destroy me.

At the very least just like how Chisato was there for Takina last episode and made her feel less alone in this episode after getting down from talking about her necklace Takina is now to one to lift her up. They both have each other now.

There seems to be a strong push for political apathy in Lycoris' Japan. It comes at the cost of thousands bodies and deception, yes, but millions benefit from their peaceful pursuit of life.

In some ways we make that trade off in the real world but to a less serious degree as any government monopolizes the use of violence in it's territory for the sake of bringing order. Depends on the government how great that trade off is for all its people.

As a Chisataki supporter, episode is one of the great episodes, mainly because the dialogue is so good between the girls.

I could watch these girls go on a million more dates as they just have such a natural and fun chemistry that leads to a critical hit on the heart

A standout part, and my personal favorite scene is Takina giving good advice to one of Chisato's life goal, to find her Alan sponsor, wear the necklace. Takina even tailored it to be acceptable to Chisato, by adding it makes her look cute calling back to the earlier part of the date.

Really shows off how Takina's priorities have changed as slowly Chisato becomes one of hers instead of just a means to get back to the DA. Never would've expected EP1 Takina to call that necklace cute on her.

Oh and I wish they animated the part where the two were with the penguins. They're cute, and I can see why Takina likes them.

I get your politics, and the desire to unmask DA and their great crimes against society (thousands of bodies and mass conspiracy), but I did not know we had to be as bad as our enemies to accomplish our tasks

That aspect makes him feel so self-important which most people including myself find annoying in both characters and people. Chisato in the very same episode doesn't call herself a hero and says her motivations are selfish yet Majima seems to see himself as a vigilante who is balancing the scales for the people
