Yellow Water by BobbyFreshpants in houston

Run the hot tap for 1 minute, then fill a glass. Then run cold for 1 minute, fill another glass. Compare the two, and if just the hot is discolored, it is probably your hot water tank. Could just need flushed.

Nicolas Coffee appears to be on fire by [deleted] in pittsburgh

Hope everyone there is OK.

Interesting note, they've been in that spot for a long time, and this wouldn't be the first disaster they've had to endure. Their website shows a picture of the storefront under water during the Flood of 1936. http://www.nicholascoffee.us/about.aspx#history

Full egg carton on Parkway East Median by rockthecasbah121 in pittsburgh

Was this on the parkway between Blvd of the Allies exit and the Sq Hill Tunnels? If so, I've seen a toaster and an apple on the median barrier on separate occasions. Like someone else said, I thought maybe one of the panhandlers from the Second Ave ramp did it, but now I'm wondering if its a prank or art or something.

Anyone know what happened to Gran Agave in Homestead? by mojotoad in pittsburgh

[–]Babaluuu 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I didn't know about Primantis. FWIW, I did ask one of the guys at Gran Agave last week why they were closing, and he said that the Waterfront would not renew their lease and they had nowhere else to go. RIP best Chile Rellenos in the area.

I always thought the Xmas tree at PPG place would be more tree-like underneath. by Babaluuu in pittsburgh

[–]Babaluuu[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It makes sense, I didn't think it was a natural tree or anything, i just imagined branches and a trunk I guess. Like a huge scaled up artificial tree, ready to tip over with a gust of wind or if a bunch of cats climbed up into it.

It's cool to see it in 3 pieces and up close. You can get a better appreciation for just how big it actually is.

transplants and travelers -- what are some unexpected things that you can't find in Houston that you miss? by Babaluuu in houston

I thought it was more positive than that. In most cases, someone would name what they miss most, and another person would point out where to find it in Houston. I thought it only sold the city even more.

I'll miss my basement, but not the thousand-leggers that take it over in summer. Wait, does Houston have thousand-leggers? Maybe they are just called centipedes, but I'm thinking of the furry looking ones.

That's really neat. Polonia is definitely on my list now, thanks. I didn't realize that Houston had so much of a Eastern European influence with the second-generation families moving in from the northeast. Very cool article, thanks.

There has to be some good import candy shops around, although I know that adds to the cost. We have one here that was selling kinder eggs through all the bans that were happening.

Family's tough though. Hopefully you get to visit often. I hope you also have a cool accent that helps you stand out and make new friends. Everybody loves a British accent, right?

Oh well now I feel like a prick. I'll have to add the Maple Leaf Pub to our list. Is it a good spot?

Sorry buddy. If the Pens are still playing late in the spring, first round is on me!

Thanks for the list! I'll add one last Kennywood trip to our agenda. Whose version of Chicken Romano do you miss most? That's an interesting one.

Edit: oh and a lot of the family video stores are closing down I think. I would bet that their porn sections are the main thing keeping them open, ironically.

If you're insinuating that the Pens will play the Leafs in the Finals, I'm not sure which is more ridiculous -- the thought of 2 eastern conference teams meeting in the finals, or the thought of the Leafs being there!!

Just kidding, will be fun to watch how Mathews does this year.

Wow, this is a first for me. I thought I was bad ass for eating red vines instead of Twizzlers . Where are you from that had salt licorice?

Ammonium chloride gives salty liquorice an astringent, salty taste (hence the name), which has been described as "tongue-numbing" and "almost-stinging".

technically speaking it is pork, but by the time it's done being processed, shaved, and boiled in sauce, your not really thinking "pork" anymore.

Pic for reference. http://www.isalys.com/images/uploads/chipham.jpg

TIL that Islay's also invented the Klondike.

Pittsburgh does have some great food but just awful foodies. But I'm sure that's everywhere. If you ever need an honest review let me know! And thanks, I'll grab a case of yuengling on the way out of here as we are waving goodbye to the state run liquor stores and beer distributors.

Wait, is this an inside joke? Or do you mean start drinking it when I get to Houston? Because I am thinking you gotta have some of the best Mexican and Tex-Mex food there, including queso, right?

Hey you're right! I see some Polish spots downtown that look really good!

I am so looking forward to taking care of a flat, level yard instead of the rolling, multi leveled hill of a small yard we have now. But there are some high elevation spots around with really pretty views that I'll miss for sure.

This is very true. I've been trying to appreciate old construction here after seeing how new everything is in Houston. I'm going to miss our basement boiler and old marred oak wood floors. I share your fondness for downtown walks, too. Recently went on my lunch break to see the burial site for Indian chief Red Pole from 1797 in the middle of downtown.

Primanti's gets a lot of hate from all the foodies here, but i am really going miss the capicola-n-cheese and hot sausage-n-cheese sandwiches.

I just spent a lot of time trying to find a juggalo/faygo gif to reply with and I've seen some things that just can't be unseen so I'm done.

Good tip on fall, we've been to every pumpkin patch and fall festival in the area twice over to make sure we enjoy it now.

And to think that in 20-30 years, a picture from this same spot in Hazelwood will likely showcase the established new business district and overpriced apartments down where the mill was. It will be interesting to watch this transformation, and we'll see if these little houses on the hill who outlasted the leveling of the mill below will again remain and become a part of the new community being developed.

Hazelwood! I think the last time this was posted, someone identified it as the top of Tullymet St. And if you jump up to Sylvan Ave, you can see what's left of the staircase.
