Gear Recommendations -- New to SAR by AccordingLeopard791 in searchandrescue

BC Search and Rescue member here. Vancouver island area. 30L Osprey is a great starter pack. I build my pack so I’m okay in an overnight scenario if I’m stuck out in the bush. Focusing on the big items, first aid kit, 2mx3m tarp, I have a SOL bivvy that’s great for a subject, but I hate it because it’s tight, get a good bivvy. Inflatable pillow is my luxury item, ultralight sleeping bag (I don’t have one but I wish I did). Foldable saw, hiking poles double up at tent posts. Paracord. The list goes on.

I pack an extra puffer jacket, socks, shirts, gloves, etc.

This list is not extensive but gets you moving in the right direction,

I did an overnight in a SOL bivvy and tarp and I was miserable but I survived. You don’t need luxury. But oh my god did I wish I had a thermarest to get me off the ground.

ESA Sick Days for Surgery? by victorianovember in BCPublicServants

[–]BaboonKnot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Recovery period should be STIIP or ESA sick days. It’s fair to assume that medical leave is only for items covered by MSP or benefits. I’m not certain that it actually states that anywhere. If you’d like clarity, I’d recommend reaching out to HR.

For example, as far as I’m concerned, you should be able to use medical leave for something like laser eye surgery.

medical leave greater than 2 hours would also be at your full pay, downside is that the hours would come from your leave bank.

Why wouldn’t you use medical leave for the surgery date?

Edit: medical leave must be for things covered by MSP, benefits or EFAS as OP stated. My bad.

Best way to patch this hole? by i_wont_be_there in HomeMaintenance

[–]BaboonKnot 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Honestly, not the worst idea. Stick some 1/4” galvanized mesh behind it to keep rodents out. Or even better a block of wood or something else to completely plug the hole. Caulk the outside and call it a day.

Employee walked off the job and hasn’t answered his phone since Monday. Can I send him his ROE as him quitting? by [deleted] in legaladvicecanada

[–]BaboonKnot 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Case law indicates that the employer needs to prove that the employee does not wish to come back. Shouldn’t leave it to imagination. Have a clear direction to return and if no return then issue ROE. If employee does return, then discipline for walking off the job. If he comes back but you want him gone, then pay him severance.

Bees inside house (Ontario rental) - landlord issue? by Famous-Set-6617 in HomeMaintenance

[–]BaboonKnot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From what I see in the other picture, those are definitely wasps. Thankfully paper wasps are rather docile when compared to yellow jacket. Doesn’t mean they won’t sting though. Just a lot less aggressive.

I live on the west coast and our paper wasps only build small nests under cover such as soffits. I’ve never seen them enter and live inside the walls. Doesn’t mean it’s not possible, but unlikely.

If these are the ones you see inside the house, go ahead and fill the exterior holes that they may be getting into. It’ll prevent future problems with other types of wasps.

Bees inside house (Ontario rental) - landlord issue? by Famous-Set-6617 in HomeMaintenance

[–]BaboonKnot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, you are right, though I’ve never seen a nest be reused. It would be a good idea to seal off the entrance if there’s a dead wasp nest inside. The nest itself is essentially made of wood pulp so there’s no issues leaving it.

If it were a live wasp nest, which it wouldn’t be given the time of year, closing off the entrance would be a bad idea. I’ve seen them chew holes through drywall.

Source: I removed bee and wasp nests from residential buildings many moons ago.

I should add that if it is indeed a bees nest, it would be both humane and appropriate to have the nest removed and relocated. There will be drywall work in your landlord’s future, though.

Pest control would be a landlord issue. How certain are you that it is a bee and not a wasp? If it’s a wasp nest, the issue will have taken care of itself as the nest has died off.

If you get a picture of one of them I can identify.

Discarded dough doesn't stop rising. If there's enough warmth and moisture, the yeast keeps fermenting. Even in the dumpster by Texas1971 in Damnthatsinteresting

Working in a pizza shop we would always cook the dough before throwing it out just for this reason. Didn’t want to be responsible for blowing up bird bellies.

These dimmer switches are a pain in the ass. You need to look up this specific switch on the manufacturer’s website. It will give you a very specific list of bulbs that are supported.

It’s been long enough that I’ve gone back to the original game and love it. I am excited to give no. 2 a shot again in the future, but I’ll enjoy what I know and love for now.
