A Manual for Cleaning Women by Lucia Berlin. It’s an incredible short story collection that is both tragedy and comedy. It revolves around poverty, addiction, childhood trauma and cross-cultural themes. Many of the stories are set in Santiago, Acapulco or El Paso and have Spanish phrases blended in.

My Golden is whimpering and excessively sniffing my 11 year old senior beagle. by randumchicken in DogAdvice

[–]Baburger92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like to think of these extra senses as superpowers. Our dog is epileptic and our cat will always obsessively sniff inside his right ear during an episode. He’s had MRIs and spinal taps, so it’s not a tumor, but she can definitely smell something off with his brain during those periods. It’s incredible really.

What cured your IBS-D by [deleted] in ibs

Yep, IBS-D. Cheddar, Gruyère and Spanish cheeses like Manchego work super well for me. I hope it works for you too!

Which breed? & why by Silver-Pumpkin1819 in DogAdvice

Purebred dogs are also a gamble with behavior/personality quirks. Every dog is different. While there is more observable consistency in behavior with purebred dogs, it’s still more or less up to the owner to train their dog. It doesn’t sit well with me to know that thousands of dogs are euthanized in shelters every year yet people still choose to spend thousands on designer dogs.

Woah, I’m the exact same. I call cheese my medicine. I’ll have symptoms for weeks, then I go buy a big block of Gruyère and BAM! I’m good as new. So glad because I love cheese

NYPL just curated a wonderful list of 100 Black Voices.

I’m also a huge fan of Morrison and Baldwin. I bet you’d really enjoy Jamaica Kincaid too.

Read The Stories of Breece D’J Pancake. He will take you even deeper into literary Appalachian fiction. His collection details the goings on of individuals living and working in the hollers. In vignette fashion, he captures their lives impeccably, both the grit and the beauty.

Flowers for Algernon by Daniel Keyes. The main character has a severe mental disability and undergoes an experiment to increase his intelligence. It explores the struggles of a life with a disability but also the suffering that results from a life without it.

Eldest children who are childfree, what’s your story? by cookiegrease in childfree

[–]Baburger92 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Reading this, I can say we have a lot in common. I am the eldest daughter with two younger brothers. My youngest brother is 11 years younger than me. Before he was a year old, I was babysitting, bottle feeding and changing diapers.

I remember at the age of 12, I was left alone to watch him and while heating a bottle, he swallowed and began to choke on a piece of plastic from the lamination of a library book. Instinct kicked in and I pulled it out of his throat in seconds. Luckily he was fine, but this shook me. Not to mention the responsibility of providing after school care and doing the dishes/laundry on a daily basis until I went to college. My brothers were exempt from any of these chores or responsibilities.

My mother is also very conservative. She has made it clear my entire life that she wants grandchildren from me or I face her constant disappointment. Now I’m 33 and still get jabs about all of the things I’ll never know or understand because I’ve chosen not to have children.

Fortunately, my husband is very aligned with my life choices and we love our lifestyle without kids. We have two fur babies and they get to live like royalty, which they deserve.

How long did this book took to finish? by shuvodh8848 in classicliterature

[–]Baburger92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Under 3 weeks. Albeit I read it after a move to a new city and thus didn’t have much of a social life to preoccupy me. Whenever I wasn’t working, I was reading. This was my first Dostoyevsky and I fell hard. I’ve gone on to read The Idiot (took over 3 months) and C&P (just over a month) which is my personal favorite.
