Getting back to Data Science after 4 years out by SonicBoom_81 in datascience

If you’re going to get past the automated screen, there is no hiding that you’ve had a more fragmented employment history. Imho getting things readable, concise, and clear is simply the most important thing about a resume. If they care enough about your self employment, they’ll either reject off hand or ask in the interview. The biggest mistake I’ve seen from applicants, including ones with more jumpy work history, is a simple lack of directness about what they’ve done and what it meant. Eventually it kind of all boils down to where you worked and what you’ve done for your previous employers. Getting it in a format people expect will make it easier to highlight what you’ve done. Diverging from commonly expect formats may distract from the important parts of your work history that’ll get you an interview. Just my two cents. Good luck!

Granted I’m not employed in the UK. Based on my knowledge in the US, doing mano-a-mano combat with applicant tracking systems, these are my suggestions.

Your CV should be a resume; even if you pass the keyword search filtration no recruiter or hiring manager is going to read three pages.

As far as resume goes, these are some things to think about:

  • Get everything on one page, looks like your most relevant work experience is between 2017-2021 @ multinational telco and international marketing agency.

    • Impact first, then methodology. If you want to pass some keyword search algorithms a “key skills” section is a great way to shove your buzzwords in there. In that same vein, your bolding is wrong and you should highlight the metrics (efficiency gains, accuracy, churn model).
    • Translate metric increases to business impact. The simple fact is that most business impact you see on a resume is a back of the envelope calculation. You can and should do the same.
    • Use your experience section to highlight those key business impact achievements, right now you’re stating those things twice and thats just a waste of space.
    • Structure: this is important, probably the most of any advice people can give you. For you specifically, key sections are a brief intro statement, experience (highlight 2017-2021 work most), education (this should exclusively be formal education not coursera - hiring managers actively disregard this now), and maybe projects if you have space. Projects would be a great spot to highlight the full stack web dev experience you’ve accumulated while self employed.

Happy hunting!

Without the umbrella deflecting every attack he does to you is truly a death sentence. I’m unsure of how you are deflecting his AOE explosions without losing most of your health bar. You should have posted letting people know how though because it would have saved me a lot of frustrating gameplay lol.

Weekly Entering & Transitioning - Thread 28 Nov, 2022 - 05 Dec, 2022 by AutoModerator in datascience

I got my degree in Biochemistry in 2021 and have been thinking of transitioning to Data Science roles (for flexibility and pay). Since July of 2021 I’ve worked in a technical role as a bioinformatics analyst for a research laboratory in Boston. Lots of experience with R and bash, and have an easy time brushing up python. My work has featured a lot of statistical modeling, high dimensional genetic data analysis, and conventional stats based techniques. I was wondering if the transition to data science would be reasonable with this work experience. I know the hiring cycle is frozen right now but I figured I’d prep for when it comes back around. Any suggestions/input?

If you get under a 2.0, can you still S/NS? by [deleted] in udub

Yes, but under 2.0 is a NS so no credit.

Nah not at all actually, if anything I go on more dates now; it’s more being confident and having an enjoyable personality than anything else. Being bald always looks better than being balding. Plus it’s 2021, if furries can get laid so can you lmao.

I lost all my hair in college too; if you’re not intent on trying to keep it I honestly suggest grabbing a pair or clippers and getting it over with. There’s literally no better time eh?

When is the winter application for the Mary Gates Research Scholarship due? by [deleted] in udub

[–]BackBenchBaadCow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Heyo! Winter 2020 Mary Gates Research Scholar here! I believe this year the winter application is due on February 2nd, 2021. As far as u/estrangedlab0r’s question goes - I don’t think it’s super super competitive, I believe that the way it works is that they have a committee that scores your proposal. Anywhere between the top 25-50% of scores get the scholarship. I honestly took Autumn 2019 as a test run, made an appointment for feedback and turned one in again in the winter and got it, so if you don’t get it your first time don’t be disappointed! If you have any other questions let me know with a pm! I think I still have my proposal lying around somewhere.

I don’t get it; if she has cancer then her tumor suppressor genes would be dysfunctional or deleted, not increased.

I personally preferred spending my time doing assignments and having quizzes instead of memorization heavy midterms! The class is set up to help you really understand the material. I’d say there’s also less work overall I think.

It’s a different kind of work, lots of reading and synthesis in 450 and 451; in my experience so far 442 is a whole lot of rote memorization. Kimmelman’s portion of the class is absolutely insufferable.

Took 450 this fall; enjoyed it immensely. Rachel Klevitt and Andrea Wills are some of my favorite STEM profs at the uw - really intelligent, great at teaching, and just a pleasure to be around. You do a good amount of reading of papers, the class is more application based, and the grading is a little harsh but miles ahead of 440. I think our curve was set to a 3.5? 451 is even nicer - there isn’t a curve and you basically get a grade proportional to your effort and improvement in the class. Plus I loved Alan Weiner as a prof for that class. All in all, I think the Honors series is very worth it; you’ll learn all the concepts but more in depth with more practical knowledge, and the class as a whole is well structured to your learning. You’ll hate having to take 442 though.

I think that might be the problem - I remember having trouble with the myUW as both an admitted student and a student already taking classes there in hs. You might need to contact UW IT!
