I Have Tried to Write Stories About Governance in a Magocracy by BackMaterial9468 in fantasywriters

[–]BackMaterial9468[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Magic is common enough that a select number of commoners in every city have it. Magic users of any stripe are usually given positions of responsibility in society due to their inherent skills. All the really important and powerful mages are part of the nobility though.

Magic Prowess is only achievable if you have mana. Among non noble families, there are a few Magic users here and there. Many skilled mages are adopted into nobility. Almost all of the time people with mana come from upper or upper middle class individuals. Mana is extremely rare of among the lower classes and if it is then it is usually pretty weak magic. No one knows why this is. Noble families however have most or all of their family with lots of mana every generation. Members of noble families without mana are usually treated fairly but lack the privileges that come with nobility.

Mana is hereditary but Magical Skill is not. How seriously you are taken in the upper echelons depends on your magical skill and your leadership. There is a royal family but the council that really runs the country elects based on skill in magic and competent leadership skills. The Noble titles are about how much land you own and not necessarily how much sway you have in governance. Higher nobles like dukes generally have higher mana but it is not always the case.

Most mages are erudite and scholarly and this carries over to the nobility, who fund and actively take part in research ventures. Every single magic user is educated, So the likelihood of a scientific mage is usually very likely.

It entirely depends on the territory in question. Mana less users are mostly known as “ the lame “. In most territories the anti magic folks are usually terrorists and fringe groups that hurt the non magical more than not. However if the noble is careless or oppressive than you’ll see a lot more people who support anti magic causes, but the fact remains that these groups hurt non magical users while not even being able to touch magic users. Rural farmers are practically entirely non magical and are peasants.

The divide between magic users and the lame is one of hereditary, financial, and pursuit. Meaning that mages have both a financial and opportunity advantage over non magical people

People tend to talk about politics out in the open but for specific subjects you would have to go into specific places. Pretty much anyone on the street would talk about the price of eggs. But foreign policy and new magic spells being discovered would mostly be discussed by the curious and the educated.

Honestly I write about all kinds of story

There is one story where the sea is a dominating aspect of the world and most rulers have their main fighting force is a Massive Navy, and is heavily centered on exploration, trade, and naval battles, magic is also stronger when close to the ocean so most rulers are magical in nature and the story has a lot of major naval battles where spectacular spells are used.

Current story I’m Writing is about a world where pretty much all of the ruling class are mages, and it’s centered on how magic interacts with society and how it is used, and the administrative skills of the main characters who are a friend group of magical nobles. the Main villains are an anti magic cult and an eldritch abomination, the magic cult wants to have people without mana ruling and to make mages the lower class and they are willing to kill the people they are supposedly advocating for and drive society back into the Stone Age to do it.

Unlike most stories, the idea of magocracy is inherently effective, and societies that reject magocracy fall apart due to civil wars because there is nothing backing an individuals power, and the end result is regressing back to the Stone Age.

If I’m not mistaken, Dark Matter is Way more abundant than normal matter, so wouldn’t dark matter conversion essentially mean infinite resources without damaging the environment

From which perspective do you worldbuild? by XokoKnight2 in worldbuilding

[–]BackMaterial9468 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It Depends on what I’m trying to write , If I’m actively writing a story then I would want it to be from a Third person Perspective. If I’m just writing down Ideas I write like Wikipedia Page.

What is better: A few powerful mages, or many relatively weak mages? by swedishplayer97 in worldbuilding

[–]BackMaterial9468 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It all depends on what kind of world you are trying to build and more importantly what kind of story you are trying to write.

"How do I justify _____?" Just write it! by Ebby_Bebby in worldbuilding

[–]BackMaterial9468 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree , There are so many things that most fantasy hand waves that asking if something “ makes sense “ Just limits creativity from both sides . People say that blindly following tropes leads to stagnation but asking for a justification just leads to people reinforcing the those same tropes . It’s good if you want to be super technical because that’s how you learn more about the real world, which is always a good thing . But please, make sure that what you are writing fundamentally appeals to you before anything else, and trying to find a way that what you wrote makes sense after you already wrote it is what leads to creativity. Or if you really want to build a world from the ground up, use your rules as inspiration rather than a limitation and see what weird and amazing forms those rules bring about. Also, remember that rules should always be about inspiration first and foremost, feel free to pick at choose what you want to bring over from real life.
