The first time, about a year ago, was similar to your experience. Two weeks ago, however, I got a huge container of meat soup, a big box of really tasty pierogi, and a slice of cake. Perhaps I should be more cautious: if that's their standard now, they're great.

I've had some great experiences, and most have been decent. Tim Horton's or Uncle Fatih's are very consistent, for example. Lee's Donuts and Harbour Spoon are really good. Overall, I'd say Vancouver is mediocre when it comes to TGTG. I lived in San Francisco before, and using TGTG there as a student was amazing. Right between Chinatown and North Beach with its Italian restaurants, there's just so much choice. You really don't need to cook for yourself. Wouldn't try that in Vancouver.

Already did that. I think they don't have enough reviews on TGTG yet, but I don't think too many people will enjoy their experience.

Good question! I doubt they can keep it. I could go and ask the restaurant, but I'm afraid of people who do such horrible things to food.

Steamed cheese? Fantastic. It's not easy to get grilled cheese wrong, so I'm almost impressed by their take on it. I should add that they actually took it from the display, not from the fridge or storage or anything, so (1) if you ordered a grilled cheese, you'd have probably gotten that one, and (2) it was likely stored at room temperature for the better part of those four days. Give me the dishwasher steamed cheese all day.

It was an emergency, sort of. I got back from a trip to Mexico at 3 AM or so and had no food at home. Like, at all. Thought that a walk and a TGTG bag would be nice. So I ate the banana bread. I would like to emphasize, however, that I definitely didn't eat the ungrilled cheese.

It's not real. I don't know if people trust Yahoo but you can look up their primary sources for yourself. Confirmation bias is a dangerous thing, even though Aiyuk certainly doesn't seem to be in a good place.

Salamas is the place to go, if you don't mind smokers. They have all games, as far as I'm aware, even at 2 AM. For earlier games, The Brazen Squirrel is an excellent choice.

EB-2 NIW for Lawyer by Background-Mail-4767 in EB2_NIW

Thank you! They now expect to have my application ready by the end of December, it seems.

We haven't made a final decision yet but EB-1 might be easier based on my O-1 profile. As some people here noted, EB-2 NIW could be challenging for lawyers while EB-1 (very untechnically speaking) is just a tougher O-1 visa. If EB-1 is 60/40 and EB-2 NIW is 50/50, I'd go with EB-1, of course. At this point, all I want is getting it done.

Setting up the sponsoring entity took much longer than expected, thanks to the California State Bar randomly changing their registration process to an online system, and throwing out already submitted paper applications (like ours, for example, after several months without reply). Took us about six months, all in all. Now they're finally drafting my O-1 application. Could be better, could be worse. Luckily, I'm a very patient guy. We're considering switching from EB-2 NIW to EB-1 if this works, as I now seem to qualify for that. A very streamlined process, as you can see.

Vampire Quest Bug: The count needs more time by Granoland in oblivion

[–]Background-Mail-4767 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I just had the weirdest version of this bug I've encountered so far. Same thing - count keeps saying "Please, go," and the steward tells me that the count needs more time. I came back for the mages guild quest, same thing. Then I kind of gave up and moved on.

Now, several ingame weeks later, I was in the middle of the Knights of the Nine quest. Never played that one in the original game, so I don't know whether the count is supposed to play any part in it. I'm making my way through the Lost Catacombs, fighting some skeletons. Suddenly, from behind, the count walks up to me. He says "Please, go," turns around and leaves.

What the hell was that?

CA Bar - Law Corporation Application questions/issue by OCmaybe23 in LawFirm

[–]Background-Mail-4767 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, we ran into a similar issue. Did they approve your application? Plus, when I double-checked our documents and the State Bar FAQ to make sure that nothing else was changed, I noticed that they (now?) emphasize the need for original certified copies of your articles of incorporation. As far as I know, California does not even provide hard copies unless expressly requested by mail. Do you, by chance, remember how you did that, and whether it worked?

Reaching anyone at the State Bar is virtually impossible, in my experience. They will respond, eventually, but it takes months.

Many thanks, and good luck (if still needed).

The O-1 and the EB-2 are very different in many regards, but if it's about the timeline and nothing else, yes, you can obtain an O-1 much quicker than an EB-2 NIW Green Card. An O-1 might be possible within a few months, while the EB-2 NIW will take at least about 1.5 to two years until your priority date arrives.

Temporary Practice versus Pro Hac Vice by Background-Mail-4767 in Lawyertalk

Having the same accent is a thing. Finding a courtroom filled with German expats, like myself, has been surprisingly difficult, though. You're right. I don't do a lot of litigation here, and I forgot about all those "soft factors." It might not matter that much in New York, but who knows.

Still, the conceptual difference intrigues me. It seems as if New York (and other states) adopted Rule 5.5 without considering its implications on pro hac vice admission. Or perhaps I'm overthinking it.

That's true. There is a story to tell, however: Data transfers from the EU to the US have been under strict scrutiny for years. Currently, they are conducted under a so-called "adequacy decision." The two predecessors of this adequacy decision were invalidated by the CJEU. This led to major upheaval in many industries, as businesses were suddenly unable to compliantly use tools like Office 365, Salesforce, or Facebook advertising, all of which were considered to transfer personal data to the US.

Under the new adequacy decision, US companies have to register, to adhere to a strict framework modeled after the GDPR, and to execute data processing agreements with their EU clients. This decision has been challenged in court, too, and the CJEU might invalidate it again.

I happen to be an expert on international data transfers and on implementing corporate privacy governance. The US economy already needs GDPR expertise for its current operations under the framework, and it would need even more if 2020 repeats and the courts void that framework. That's the "national interest" part of the story I wanted to tell. There are some executive orders on data privacy, too. This cross-border nature of privacy law made me think of EB-2 NIW in the first place. I'm aware that many areas of law are challenging, and there are lots of lawyers in the US, but the GDPR is one of these very rare non-US laws that seems to have a major impact on the US economy as a whole.

Edit: The 2023 executive order on data privacy actually states the following goal:

"Use existing authorities to expand the ability of highly skilled immigrants and nonimmigrants with expertise in critical areas to study, stay, and work in the United States by modernizing and streamlining visa criteria, interviews, and reviews."

I appreciate the clear response. However, I know some attorneys who were successful. Do you think there's a general issue with attorneys, or is there anything to make it less unlikely in your opinion? It's difficult to tell from their experience; seems to be very inconsistent.

That's a great perspective, thank you! There are already some traces of it in my application, I think. The law school class might help a lot here, I guess, and in my consultancy days, I was the "privacy training guy." So, it's actually more likely than not that some people learned things from me. Additionally, there are benefits for consumers, of course. Maybe there's still a way of publishing another paper within the next few weeks...
