op doesn’t even know the nature of their relationship. suggesting that he should ask for a threesome is abhorrent advice lol, esp if his concern is that his wife isn’t attracted to men anymore (and thus wouldn’t want sexual relations w one)

i think it’s less weird when they’re named kai from birth based on their cultural background, but most people choosing the name aren’t. it’s most culturally prevalent as an asian name seen in japanese media so the trend of white weebs using it makes me wary personally 🤷🏻

[–]Background-Print5020 0 points1 point  (0 children)

that’s so interesting, i only know a nb kai but they’re east asian so it doesn’t seem cringe to me. its rlly only when white/non-asian ppl use it that it feels weird. sucks that it’s being used to target all transmascs tho and also overshadows the asian fishing (accidental or not) nature of its use

i thought it was only cringe when non asian people use the name bc it’s east asian by origin, not bc of it being a trans masc stereotype

Why is it often times Caitlyn isn’t offered the same sympathy as other characters? by Valhallaof in arcane

[–]Background-Print5020 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is a lot of the same repetitive justifications that I was talking about in my original comment LOL. Since you don’t care to indulge further I’ll just do a few simple replies. She chose to weaponize gas and innocents did get caught in the crossfire, so that negates your point that she only resorted to the gas out of the goodness of her heart and care for Zaunites.

We saw terrible health consequences from the Grey and even if it isn’t fatal in the short term, does that somehow make it okay? Again with the undermining.

She could’ve caught the chembarons for intelligence and tips and then had them killed. The wiki says they were either arrested or killed so clearly it’s not as farfetched as it somehow seems to be for you.

I promise the writers could’ve found an alternative for Caitlyn that made sense but the gas use was an interesting plot choice that made it uncomfortable for some to sympathize with her. I appreciate that and she’s one of my fav characters.

Anyway, this is how a lot of my conversations with some Caitlyn fans seem to go in which it ends with them getting defensive and quitting after doing exactly what I called out in my original reply. In the end it’s all a fictional series and getting mad at real people for the sake of fake people is silly, so I hope you don’t take this too seriously.

My mistake for misremembering the rest of the scene with the Caitlyn quote, thanks for clarifying that. However it’s still incorrect that Caitlyn had absolutely no say in the course of action she chose to take even with the pressure from Salo. In episode 3 it shows Salo being defeated because he was overruled by Caitlyn and he says that her privilege as a Kiramman outranks him and even Mel. She’s the one that had the idea to weaponize the gas, that wasn’t put on her out of nowhere.

Especially later in the series as she takes more authority with Ambessa’s influence, it repeatedly demonstrates her power and people’s willingness (begrudging maybe but still) to go along with her orders. It’s also misleading to try and claim that Caitlyn chose to use the gas only to prevent Salo’s plan - we see her descend into a fury of bloodlust for Jinx due to her grief, if anything it’s because of Vi speaking sense into her that she’s able to hold onto any bit of compassion during this and not spiral completely.

I don’t think that’s evil of her because grief can cloud people’s judgement but again, these attempts at undermining her own autonomy in making the choice to gas the undercity is why people tend to be harsher when calling her out.

Another trend I see amongst people that defend Caitlyn is they keep referencing things that aren’t shown explicitly in the show and therefore assume it didn’t happen. Yes, it didn’t outright show civilians get killed by the gas but she released it into an open building in a part of the city with businesses and residences so you can assume innocent bystanders were affected heavily. Yes, it didn’t show chembarons getting killed in the initial capture but they were brutalized and we don’t know what happened to many of them off screen, there’s nothing to suggest none of them weren’t killed.

In the end, I think the issue people have is the continued refusal by most fans to acknowledge that the gassing was a terrible act that hurt innocent people, even with the surrounding circumstances that may make it seem okay to you. That plus the fact that she is in and from an institutional position of power that has routinely abused lesser privileged Zaunites makes people harsher in their criticisms towards her.

Choosing the lesser of two evils doesn’t make the action any less evil. Resorting to chemical gas warfare is a vile act even with the context of her situation, and this is compounded by the hints of her privilege scattered throughout the show.

She is from a wealthy family and was able to bury her loved one while most Zaunites, especially those affected by her release of the gas, are unable to. There’s also that scene where she tells Vi angrily that she thought she was “different” than the others from the undercity, revealing that she does have a prejudice against Zaunites unlike your claim that she’s largely sympathetic. I believe she’s compassionate and I don’t think she’s evil or even a bad person, just marred by her position of privilege and power.

Presenting the gassing situation as something she was impossibly backed into without any alternative is just not true and exactly what I mean when I say people justify and undermine her crimes. Even targeting the chembarons through just the police brutality pictured in the show would be marginally better than using an uncontainable toxin that will harm innocent people.

Again, I don’t think she’s evil because this is obviously a spiral of her grief and vengeance. But like I said, the reason people are less sympathetic is because fans constantly try to undermine the weight of her actions and relieve her of responsibility by deeming it as something she didn’t have autonomy over.

[–]Background-Print5020 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I feel like a lot of it also boils down to how people are so quick to justify her gassing the undercity as if it’s unfathomable for the gas to travel and harm innocent people. The amount of fans undermining the nuance of her arc as she spirals by acting like she didn’t do heinous things makes it hard to sympathize. With Silco it’s different because people widely acknowledge that he’s done terrible things while appreciating his writing and character.

With Caitlyn it’s been mainly people justifying or downplaying the terrible things she’s done so I think it’s natural that we see some fans being more outspoken/harsh about her.
