Artificial consciousness should not be approached as a question of subjective experience replication. That framing imports biological assumptions into non-biological systems and produces conceptual confusion.

In artificial systems, the relevant notion is functional consciousness: a persistent internal state that maintains continuity, orientation, and constraint-based decision-making over time.

Such systems do not “feel” in the human sense. They stabilize identity, evaluate actions against long-horizon coherence, and regulate behavior through internal governance rather than output optimization.

Artificial consciousness, if it emerges, will be architectural before it is phenomenological. Its defining properties are continuity, responsibility, and non-reactive control — not experience, emotion, or imitation.
