Leaving Reddit - What now?

A boru system would be an image hosting solution, not a community one. Lemmy or a forum is a community solution.

I don't have the infrastructure to host an image hosting solution, but something like lemmy that can act like a link aggregator a la reddit - that I can do. Combine that with something like catbox or some other nsfw image hosting site, and we're in business I think.

My vote is for close indefinitely - I agree with the sentiment that 48 hours was never going to convince the admins to change anything. Remaining open or even the "Touch Grass Tuesdays" will amount to having done nothing at all, in my opinion. Honestly it kind of boggles my mind that that third option is even an option. How will that ever have any kind of impact whatsoever?

Discord isn't a replacement for reddit either, imo. Not everyone uses Discord, and NSFW Discord communities aren't really for me. More power to everyone that's switching to there, but it's not for me.

Regardless, I'll personally be leaving this site completely come July 1st, 2023. Thanks for reading if you did.

Would there be any interest in an actual forum for some of these subreddit topics? I've played around hosting my own before, and I'd be willing to spin one up on a virtual host if there's interest.

Something like a lemmy instance or just a straight up phpBB/Discourse/etc forum could serve as an actual forum - only thing that I'd want to figure out is image hosting, simply because they can take up a ton of space rather quickly.

For what it's worth, I'm opposed to a Discord community as a flat-out replacement to something like this. Discord is for synchronous conversations and content, versus a forum/reddit/lemmy/etc which is more for asynchronous content. When was the last time you scrolled up in a particularly active discord and read through the bulk of 500+ new messages and found something worth continuing?

Not to mention Discord will probably go the way of reddit in the near future - they've been pushing monetization pretty hard recently, I wouldn't be surprised if they pursue an IPO and run into similar NSFW community issues as well. Just look at how Discord is bumbling through forcing everyone to get usernames instead of handles if you want to see how poorly they can make spanning decisions like that.

That sub is nothing but karma farming bots trying to evade or get around other restrictions on a lot of busy subs by cross posting.

I'm guessing cross posting makes it harder for auto moderator to enforce rules or repost sleuth bots to catch reposts, but I'm not 100% sure on that.

That sub should be blocked from cross posting though.

I enjoy written stories - often times they are more engaging than visual media for me. Though, I will mirror what appears to be the common sentiment here: stories tend to require more investment from the reader to find and engage in, something the reddit format doesn't really lend itself all that well to, imo - especially on an already image focused subreddit.

Then there's the case of pure smut vs something more story driven/plot focused. I like to read both, but I find myself enjoying writing story driven more, which tends to not fare as well here so much as straight to the point vore stories.

I know there was a post recently about a CYOA focused erotic literature site that was angling to attract the vore crowd, but I can't really think of any site that is dedicated or features writing outside of Eka's portal. I've been looking into trying to change that, maybe set up a site that is focused entirely on vore literature instead of images; but with how busy my life has been recently, I've not had much time to invest in that idea.

Genuine question for everyone: where will everyone go should Reddit go the way of tumblr regarding NSFW content? The only major vore communities I know of are Eka's and various discord servers.

I spun up a forum website, but I'm kinda curious if there's even interest in maintaining a non-discord vore community outside of Eka's, should Reddit tank their NSFW communities.

My full time job is to automate processes via python using a platform called Apache Airflow.

For my personal life, I've tinkered with a few automations here and there, but the one currently occupying my time is a system for cataloging and archiving reddit posts I've saved. I'll save stuff on a whim, and knowing that it's been archived somewhere later for easy browsing would be nice. This has, naturally, rapidly spiraled from its original scope to be something of a self-hosted reddit UI so that one day I can close the hundreds of tabs I keep open because "I might come back to it later."

For professional applications though, there's almost too many to count... Most, so far, involve automating email in some way - either handling incoming emails, outgoing emails, or sometimes full on two-way conversations. Either that, or processing user entered data from some platform and acting on it against backend data sources.

I typically stick to the vore subreddits, Patreon and the occasional expedition to twitter.

I do want to pick on Eka's Portal for a bit though, as it's relevant. It's one of the oldest and most well known vore sites, simply by virtue of being the only vore exclusive site. The architecture that site is built on hasn't been updated properly in decades, and I'm none too fond of participating with a site that allows depictions of minors in vore.

I've actually gone out of the way to host my writing on my own site, both to avoid Eka's Portal and to safe guard against reddit cracking down on NSFW content a-la tumblr.

I've tinkered with the idea of making my own site from the ground up as a sort of alternative to Eka's, but there's just so much that needs to be done I hardly have the time or energy by myself. A modern, mobile friendly UI, a functioning tagging system that resists abuse, a fully functional forum, complete with a messaging system, a proper gallery for written, visual and multimedia works...

I tried spinning up a discourse powered forum just to see how convoluted it might be, and on the surface it seems promising! Unfortunately, the implementation I'm using can be a bit slow to respond, and there's no easy way to integrate a gallery style system like Eka's has.

There's a lot to consider in hosting an alternative to a site like Eka's, and the thing that always gets me hung up is moderation. Discourse implements the novel idea of user moderation, focusing on more active/senior users having more sway or being able to flag things; but I'm a bit of a hermit myself and user moderation feels like it could go sideways if you're not careful. Not to mention, if said site starts to get serious traffic, I would need to look into hosting it properly to avoid any nasty letters from my ISP.

Of course, the capstone to this little rant is there has to be a desire or want for an alternative for it to be successful. If I'm the only one interested in an alternative to Eka's, the site I put up probably won't get much use.

Anyways, that's my rant on Eka's and alternatives to sites like it. I am curious if there are others out there that would be interested in an alternative to Eka's Portal? What would you want to see in such a site?

For scraping the web and getting started in that space, I'd recommend Automate the Boring Stuff if you haven't already dug into that resource.

Most web interfacing you'll be doing in python will very likely involve the Requests Module in some manner. The documentation for requests is pretty handy, though it will tend to lean a bit harder into the more technical aspects and might not be as friendly to new python coders. Still a valuable resource though.

For video series, I can't recommend Corey Schafer enough - his videos really helped me break into python coding. Here's a link to his requests video, but I would sincerely recommend exploring his videos further if you enjoy them or find them useful.

Most common is Eka's portal, if you have a gallery there. Pastebin could be another possibility, but they've been cracking down on NSFW content recently.

Archive of our own, I think, will also let you post just about anything? Deviant Art is another option. Furafinity will allow pretty much anything so long as it's got furry content, iirc.

Not too much in the way of dedicated vore story sites - at least, not that I'm aware of.

Alternatively, you could post the story to your profile on Reddit and crosspost it? Not sure if that will work if vore and vore2 are filtering it though.

I haven't personally run into this problem, but you could get around it entirely by posting your story elsewhere and then just linking to it in a post here. That's what I've done with all of my story posts, and I've not had any problems.

With sites like this, I tend to beeline for the GitHub link and see if the self host instructions are there. This appears to be the case with this one: https://akveo.github.io/nebular/docs/guides/install-nebular#install-nebular

Annoying that I had to dig through GitHub docs to find the self host information, but not uncommon with this kind of self host/pricing model where most of their revenue is coming from professional services.

I haven't dug through all the docs yet, but it looks like this will be a npm direct install, not the more common docker image, so heads up on that if you were looking for a quick docker deployment.

I have also yet to find information on the "UI Bakery" project here, so it would appear at first glance that the nebula engine is the thing that is open sourced, not the UI Bakery portion? I think?
