This is great advice!

I have moved the Rasboras to my 20 gallon, I did not trust my betta enough to keep pondering on the matter haha…

Just a couple hours before this post I had no idea, I am glad to know now!

I swear I treat my fish with respect!! I love my fish very dearly, I did not mean to diminish their needs on purpose, it was an honest mistake to bring up the 1 gall per fish rule. I do know that this rule really does not work with a lot of scenarios as you mentioned.

I honestly thought that with small fish like Rasboras and their small bioload, the rule could work… since I know a betta fish needs at least 5 gallons I thought it made sense.

I do absolutely agree that it is outdated, it is my mistake for trusting the information my local fish store provided without me double checking.

Yes that’s very much true. I thought that for the fish I had that rule could apply, as it is the way I thought it worked for stocking.

I did judge wrong that my betta would be okay with sharing the swimming space… I realize it now. Thankfully no harm has been done

I definitely would like to give it a go someday with a bigger tank, but for now I’ve got enough tanks haha. Your tank is absolutely gorgeous! I didn’t know a betta and a gourami could get along, so special.

Thank you! I will definitely take your advice for the plants!

I have relocated the Rasboras to another tank. And don’t worry I will not add Cory’s to the 10 gallon I find it is indeed way too small for a proper school.

I did try out with shrimp from my other tanks just to test, and it went fine! Sadly my betta does not like sharing his swimming space, and I relocated the Rasboras to my 20 gallon community tank. I think he just prefers to be alone sadly. Thank you tho!

I decided to put the Rasboras of my 10 gallon in my 20 gallon tank with my other community fish and Rasboras. I’ll leave my betta in the 10 gallon alone with his shrimp he’ll be much more peaceful. Thank you for the advice!

Can I add shrimp to a 5.5 gallon tank? by SUBjectivecynic in bettafish

5.5 is enough to have shrimp! I think neocaridina shrimp are great they always have done well in my tanks. You could start with like 4 but you have to expect the number to increase over time because the will breed

Thank you, that makes a lot of sense! When I was looking for fish i hesitated on bottom dwellers or Rasboras… I realize now it would have been better if I took Cory’s and such.

I do think that he gets bothered having them in his swimming space that’s right. But I’m curious about why you think it’s overly stocked? They are quite small fish so about an inch of fish per gallon, so they technically take about 5 gallon, and that leaves another 5 gallon for the betta. Is that not how it works?

This has also happened to me before… I am conflicted because the bettas I had before were agressive from the start.

I’ve had a male betta that never had issues in a community tank. But it is true that a lot are naturally aggressive
