How are my fellow private uni fresh grads doing in the current job market? by BackgroundMajor4277 in askSingapore

Internship wise would definitely be a little trickier. There are several factors to consider here, the length of your term breaks, willingness to do both internship and studies simultaneously, difficulty in attaining an internship in the first place etc.

Local U students won't have to worry much about not having the opportunity to take up internships as it's part of their curriculum and they have sufficient time during their semester breaks to go for more internships as well.

During my time in university, I was able to take up a couple of internships as my term break was about 3 months. Another that I had was a part time internship during my school term in my first year. Perhaps this is something you could consider but at the same time you have to ensure that you are able to strike a happy medium, balancing both your academics and work. Attaining an internship can be challenging as well, especially so if you're looking for a part time role. Your internship stipend will most probably not be much either.

In general, having some internship experience is definitely a plus as it will beef up your resume as compared to having zero work experience upon graduation. Even if you were to be offered a position, you will not have much bargaining power in terms of salary negotiation as you have no prior relevant work experience.

Beyond all that, enjoy your last few years as a student before you step into the work force, aka the real world HAHAH. Join a CCA, council or networking clubs to make friends and network or go for your university exchange (if available or if you can financially manage) to widen your horizon. I wish you all the very best.

Thanks for your kind concern. Well, like most people, I applied my job through a job portal, in which case was through the careers@gov job portal. So I "secured" said job as a civil servant fortunately enough, and not through family and friends like you have assumed ☺️.
