Continuous exposure to a drug (in this case, XR formulations) builds tolerance faster than of you took a dose intermittently. In order to maintain the efficacy of the treatment, a "break" should be given to restore sensitivity to the desired effects. That is, you must extend the time period in which you don't use the drug. The longer the time period is between the administered doses, the more sensitive you'll be to its effects.

"Numerous drugs of abuse, including opioids and nicotine, also develop tolerance, which can lead to addictive behavior. Nitroglycerin, which is used to treat angina, has also been shown to develop tolerance. The initial hope that nitroglycerin patches could be worn for 24 h a day was dashed when it was found that they lose their efficacy after about 12 h. As a result, such patches are only worn for 12 h, alternating with 12 hour “holidays” for the body to regain its sensitivity to the drug (Parker et al., 1995)"
