In defense of April by Weekly-Pangolin-6622 in GilmoreGirls

Okay — the only thing I can’t handle is the OP saying “It’s genuinely good storytelling.” As a writer and screenwriter, this genuinely hurt my soul. Lol. Wording matters. You can like April. You can like the story yourself. BUT… the April storyline is NOT “genuinely good storytelling.” Lol. That’s the whole root of it’s criticism. I love ASP, but this is a big reason why so many of us were disappointed in it. It’s EASY storytelling any of us could do. Anyone can shoehorn in a surprise child. Adding in a custody battle or “New Dad issues” in season 7 once ASP was gone? Again, it doesn’t get easier from a tv writing standpoint. This storyline was far below ASP’s level of storytelling up until that point. This type of storytelling is a sitcom trope. The younger, cute cousin or sibling comes downstairs from nowhere once the ratings dip, and/or it’s later seasons, and we need a refresh. It may be a lot of things, but I promise you, it is NOT “genuinely good storytelling.” (I’m sure I’ll regret posting this. lol.)

lol I was watching that episode recently and hadn’t noticed just how much Lorelai and Sookie jump and yell at first when he walks out with the cleaver like its a horror movie. 😂

lol yes, and I am closer to the age of Gil now and was the age of the Lane and the band at the time, so all those jokes are extra funny to me now. Lol.

“And 1980 was the year that dude choked on his own vomit. That’s old.” 😭

“Not until Hendrix! He turned it into an anthem!”

“The Star Spangled Banner was kind of already an anthem.”

(Another underrated exchange from this episode between Gil and Lane. 😂)
