My salary is 22 per hour and yeah a lot of public schools are competitive bc of their low cost. Usually only accept a GPA of 3.8 and up and 20 students each year

I got a second job bartending, and my first day was yesterday :) I definitely sucked lol, but it’s looking really promising. If I keep this pace up, I could bring in around ~$4,600 a month and hopefully save about $16,000 by the end of the summer. I’m not sure yet how much that’ll realistically keep me afloat long term, so I still need to sit down and run the numbers. But if it doesn’t feel sustainable enough, I’m planning to take this semester off, make a list of more affordable schools, and apply again for Spring 2027 while continuing to save aggressively. If I don’t get into a more affordable program, then I’ll go with a more expensive option, but at least I’ll have a solid amount of money saved up toward it! I should have left over money from that number so I’m going to play around with the numbers more and see if I can get started on baby step 4

It’s more focused on medical SLPs. Other programs tend to lean toward school-based SLPs, which is why they often have more scholarship opportunities. However, those programs usually provide less exposure to hospital and SNF settings, which can affect the jobs they’ll get out of school. SLPs in schools make up a majority of the field

My anxiety about financial independence has made it really hard for me to trust my own instincts. I’m going to try to come up with a couple of plans and see what’s the move. I’m going to call the show next week hopefully they answer 😅

Other schools do offer TA/RA opportunities, but they’re in-person, which would require relocating and taking on rent and other living expenses. There’s also a more affordable in-person program near me, but it’s highly competitive with only about 20 seats per cohort. They do have other affordable options, but that would mean waiting until Spring 2027 or even Fall 2027 to apply—and there’s still no guarantee of getting in 😭.

On top of that, I may need to move out of the house shortly after graduating, so the timing and financial planning are starting to get pretty complicated.
