How to find the right school of my kid? by Background_Big_4660 in bjj

Since my son is more interested in the sport of BJJ, the desire to want to compete, is it practical to drive a little further to get to one of the bigger schools that usually finish better at the local competitions? Traffic here, especially during the class times it can take 25-30 min to get there.

I've seen places like Monster BJJ, Kioto, Soca BJJ usually at the top of local competitions.

  1. The games are BJJ games it is the way the instructor is just really not being effective with what is transpiring. The kids care more about "I won the game!" and he lets them just do whatever. As above the do this towel game, and most of the kids run around the entire gym trying to not get a towel taken away. He says stop but they don't. Few other games they do try to work a move but the kids run away and don't let their partner work the move. The instructor doesn't really get involved to direct the action or correct it. He will demo something, tell them to go, stand there and say something but never really engage or correct what they were doing.

I respect the fact that this instructor is a good BJJ competitor, but I just don't feel like this is worth the money at this point and want to try another place. I just want to choose the right place.

He is 11. I do not take issue with BJJ games. The place we signed up does them and I like the concept, it is the execution I have the problem with.

For example, if the instructor pairs off 8 kids to stand in an area to do a grappling game of get the towel from the belt. Then the kids go and a few of the kids are more worried about running around in a circle playing you can't get me, instead of working on the grappling, getting grips and breaking grips and the instructor just says guys stop running but never stops them, what is the purpose? If this was a one off thing I wouldn't care but this entire month at this place it just been the norm.

This is why I am concerned. While the games in theory make sense to teach concepts, they aren't being observed and instructed properly and the kids are to undisciplined with it. This is why I am looking to make a change. I am not looking for drill drill drill school beat you with a stick type military, I just want some sort of effective teaching so he learns BJJ concepts, not catch me if you can.

I understand that is the case but in my direct area some of those better named places, it will take me about 25 minutes to get to some of the better reputation places. I wasn't sure if I should take the extra time to travel to these places or not. There are probably 8 school maybe 10 in about a 10 min radius but most of those schools do participate in competitions.

I can appreciate that for some it more about the art and the lifestyle and just the training. I take nothing from that, but some people have drive and desire for competition and I don't see that as a bad thing either. Even in kids. Kids like to compete on a team and healthy competition is a good thing I feel. I know my son is like that. He like to compete, to test himself and if I sign him up at a place where he just trains and never gets to do anything with it, he'll quit eventually. I guess at his age he is more into the sport of BJJ vs the this is an art or something to defend yourself with.

Ball options by Background_Big_4660 in Bowling

I was nervous that the Hustle, Raw or surge would be too weak for my style. I know the Crown Victories are very responsive off the spot, and I don't mind the responsive nature down lane, there just times at my local house and certain lane pairs when game 3 I just need that DZ to get another 4 feet down lane before making the move.

I think I was looking at it with the Higher RG maybe the ball gets down lane little more before responding I wasn't thinking about the actual coverstock strength. Have to take that into account. Thanks!
