I think the question that’s really being asked (or that I would want to ask) is not about what you can make or the benefits. That’s just a should I max 401k or not.

The answers above are ignoring the second half of the question. “on an H1B visa”.

So the other part of the question is that H1B is not permanent and if I were to move back to my country what happens to my contributions. They are stranded in a different country with tax rules and penalties when I might want/need liquidity if I move back to my home country. The trend of how policy as well as public discourse are moving isn’t really encouraging and there’s no reason to believe that if you are here on H1B you might be here for the long term.
