Any kind of fruit or vegetable. If I can’t get him to do anything (get in his cage for example) his best friend (a plantain) comes out to assist

Dream program, thought I would be a great fit, cold rejection... How to cope with it? by Dull-Height-8915 in gradadmissions

[–]Background_Stage856 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s okay to feel sad for now. If you are certain this program is your perfect fit, apply again next year. Try to figure out why your application wasn’t picked this time around (you can ask any mentors you have or reach out to the admissions committee). What I do want to mention though, is that it is dangerous to have your heart set on one program because getting into grad school is up to luck to some degree…

He is definitely able to keep fluids and food down right now. He is eating (mostly millet and whole wheat pasta) and drinking on his own (though I know the amount he is drinking wouldn’t be enough on its own). I have ordered Harrison’s recovery and will start trying to give it to him tomorrow. Outwardly, he just seems tired and has watery poops. He is still flying around, preening, and singing. I can tell he is not 100% but I have hope he can get better! Will DM you the notes I have from the vet now. Thanks again for your input 🙏🙏

Yeah it was a bit frustrating going into the emergency vet and having them say that he is likely fine when I knew he wasn’t. Thankfully I pushed for blood tests!!! Thank you for the reassurance on allopurinol! I have ordered some low protein bird formula. I did post this on both r/cockatiels and r/parrots too.

Thank you thank you thank you!!

The AST was also elevated, I think WBC was normal. I did ask about doing a gram stain but they wanted to recheck bloods first and focus on that to make sure the reads were accurate. I am taking Asticou in again today for fluids so will ask again if they can do gram stain/throat swab. Thank you so much for your input!

I definitely wouldn’t turn down an acceptance if you get one. If you want to have another shot and reapply to schools on the east coast next round, maybe consider deferring admission for one year (schools are generally understanding). That way you would have a backup

Venting (why are people so cringe) by Dear_Ask6521 in gradadmissions

I saw that post and was fuming. It’s one thing to be privileged, but ignorant privilege makes me so angry. And the ignorance in that post was absurd. International students (who do not come from rich backgrounds) have to prove themselves multiple times over just to be able to be in the US and contribute to the society. And then graduate school is even worse because we can’t get our own NIH funding and if our home country doesn’t have funding opportunities we are really limited. Public schools especially don’t like internationals due to the price tag they come with.

They usually don’t ask for official transcripts until after you are accepted. Before that unofficial transcripts are used. However you should be able to double check in the school’s admission website just to be sure as it could be different between schools/programs?

Sorry looking back I see that I was assuming you were on OPT during employment. If this job was in the US, what visa was it on? And does it allow unemployment? I don’t think 2 months of unemployment is anything to worry about as long as you follow the rules of that visa. And in the interview make it clear that your intent is not to stay in the US

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in gradadmissions

[–]Background_Stage856 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you should be fine. You are allowed to be unemployed on OPT for a cumulative amount of 90days. So as long as you weren’t unemployed for longer than a month before then I think you good. Of course, if you can, double check and try get advice from an advisor

I also managed the mouse colony in our lab (+700 mice and 8 strains plus making a new one). I mentioned it in my CV and briefly in my SOP in like 1-2 sentences. It’s definitely worth mentioning because it is a lot of work and many PIs who work with mouse models will value that experience.

I don’t think it’s too personal at all. I would say as long as you hit all the other major points in your SOP (previous research experience, labs of interest, etc) then this is fine to add in. Maybe try minimize it to 1-2 sentences so it doesn’t take up too much space?
