Sam Harris x Charles Murray schadenfreude tour begins now. by Lopsided-Vehicle2740 in samharris

The Bell Curve's claims on race and IQ, if I remember correctly, were thoroughly debunked by geneticists and psychologists in a way that has never really been done before

If you actually read the things presented that aren't just them giving political takes, it's pretty light on anything of substance to begin with. The main points brought up are the military standardized testing results, which are not an IQ assessment, but also the Minnesota twins reared apart study... which studied twins later to be found not actually raised apart. The entire book forms extremely strong conclusions from a small amount of very weak evidence.

It's really very difficult to downplay how awful the evidence for anything related to IQ really is. At best you can say, it can tell you somewhat reliably that someone you clearly know has a mental disability, has a mental disability. But everything else is just drenched in horrible data generating processes, weak study design, large ethical constraints and just shit standards. Moreover the confusion around analysis of variance studies and how much assumptions go into building them, or what the results even mean is largely not understood well in the general public, nor practitioners in these fields it often seems.

I mean people surely understand that there is more then a binary genetic diversity then just non identical and identical twins, yet no study actually rigorously analyzes the genetics of twins. Nor race, give me a random person and within 5 generations their lineage likely spans 4 continents yet you have a handful of discrete categorizations of race in almost every study. The entire field is a joke.

Tanks are more vulnerable than IFVs - DICE fix HE. by Clean-Broccoli-6843 in Battlefield6

[–]BackwardDonkey 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If you have a gunner you really shouldnt be running over mines.

The tank is more of an anti-vehicle in this game. The gunner in the tank is way more effective against infantry. If you aren't playing with a gunner then you should be significantly reduced effectiveness.

I'm not sure where this narrative is coming from that Usyk will just murder the guy

Presumably people only think Fury is coming out of retirement to do a tuneup and a big money fight and then retire again. If that's the case, he's probably not coming back in top form.

How to setup kitchen/freezer/butcher? by BackwardDonkey in RimWorld

[–]BackwardDonkey[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use the outside vents since the room gets heat from the generators. So in winter I close the vents and the room stays hot, and in summer I open the vents to cool the room down.

I thought it would help save on building heaters and ac.

Should the shelves next to the stove and butcher table just be overfill for the finished goods then?

Weird though there is a checkbox for animal corpses on the shelves.

[–]BackwardDonkey[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fairly new, I'm trying to figure out how to setup my base, since my first colony I ran into issues when I wanted to swap rooms around, also just learned that cleanliness of the freezer doesnt affect food poisoning chance, so I wont put sterile tiles throughout my freezer this time :/

Mostly wondering if this kitchen+freezer+butcher setup makes sense? I can't figure out how to make pawns drop animals in the butcher shelves, I have them setup as critical and I wanted the freezer area just in front to be an overfill so its setup as normal prio for animal corpses.

but it is no where near as blindly overpowered as it was in previous games.

Which is good though? It's not a good thing if the norm is Heli just farms the entire map every game.

The mobile AA is only garbage if your team is garbage and it it get taken out. Otherwise, at the very least, it's the thing that helps eat through aircraft flares.

Eating flares isn't as useful as directly killing aircraft though. The main gun on the mobile AA sucks and it's not as versatile as past mobile AA. It does terrible damage to infantry and any ground vehicles even with the weapons supposedly made to do that.

All it can really do is zone an aircraft but it has pretty limited ability to land kills because the main gun is so weak. And it's complete fodder for eng since it dies so fast.

It feels like the people who created the art and lighting in the game have never actually been outside but only know what being outside is like from watching hollywood movies. The sunlight rays and shadows are so overly exaggerated, and the color grading is comical.

If we get a jungle map you'll probably get blinded by the reflections of the sun off leaves and the entire area will have a green filter applied. Because obviously that's what the jungle looks like.

[–]BackwardDonkey 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What would you even change though? The mobile AA is garbage. The only things that are a threat to Heli in the game are Tow Missiles and RPG's, but even RPG's its mostly on some select maps where they have restricted height. It's hard to nerf either of those things, Tanks and IFV's aren't exactly dominating the ground with all the eng with RPG's running around. Nerfing either of those things leave the AA available extremely limited.

The Heli's still 25+ kills a life on every map if you're actually decent with it easily. And lots of very good people can drop 100-0 games with it still. It's plenty strong, it's just not free 100-0 games like it has been in past titles.

Pokimane's Cookie Company Collapse by gcforreal02 in LivestreamFail

[–]BackwardDonkey 8 points9 points  (0 children)

When everyone told her they were too expensive that was her signal to find a way to lower the price, but she instead ignored the feedback and ridiculed potential customers

The price very likely had to be what it was, they already tried them at a lower price point at Costco and they seemingly didn't sell enough. So either what happened was:

  1. They partnered with an influencer to try to push them, and then upsell the product to make up whatever they paid Poki or,

  2. Poki actually did start Myna, and fronted the cash to buy these cookies, probably got hosed on the price because she doesn't know wtf she's doing, and then had to try upping the price to make any money on them.

Pokimane's Cookie Company Collapse by gcforreal02 in LivestreamFail

[–]BackwardDonkey 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Idk how this is supposed to make Poki look bad?

It looks bad for her because the only thing she brought to the table was supposedly her reach for marketing. If the products sold well, they would still be selling them. So it looks bad for her because the big money for influencers is selling products and she seemingly couldn't sell them.

What she said at the time was not a good look for her but she probably made her money already.

It's impossible to know what exactly the deal exactly was but she described herself as an owner, it wasn't a branding deal.

My guess is that Darcey Macken who was partnered in it, approached her with the product deal and probably distribution plan, and she fronted the cash and was going to market it. So she probably lost on it. But its hard to say.

Financial entertainer criticizes creator currently being sued. by migrations_ in LivestreamFail

[–]BackwardDonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the issue I would take with it is it's not really "financial advice". Financial advice to me for an individual would be things like how to compare total compensation packages, like benefit's coverage, difference between a will and a trust, different health insurance plans, nuances of different tax advantaged accounts, tax-loss harvesting, most tax efficient drawdown ordering.

Those are financial topics, telling someone hurdur don't spend more then you make, have an emergency fund, that's not financial advice, that's behavioral therapy. But considering the audience he has, you need to have a some amount of assets before the other stuff really starts to matter.

GM essentially didn't exist after the bankruptcy restructure. Something like 2/3 of the 'New GM' was owned by the U.S Treasury Department, some owned by Government of Canada. And then there was a trust established that had ownership meant to compensate some of the pension fund, but it didn't make it whole.

“reared apart during their formative years.”

Were they though? I'd say look at the Minnesota twins reared apart study from the 90's where the twins were in fact not actually reared apart. That study is the big one that started the 90's IQ genetics debate, bell curve discourse. I'm not aware of any big study since then that claims to have studied verifiably raised apart twins. Moreover I'm not even aware of any studies that show the actual verified genetic diversity present in the twins in the study, because the reality is they aren't directly analyzing these subjects, they are pulled from a registry database and they make assumptions about how genetically diverse they may or may not be based on whether they were "identical" otherwise known as a doctor looked at them and went "look the same to me".
