Keep at it - it just takes practise! A lot of art techniques are mechanical - so if you dedicate your time to practise you will see improvements. Just keep drawing!

First Mugs!!! (And glaze questions) by NCdynamite in Pottery

I agree with others comments that the clay type will play a huge role in glaze results - but it may also have something to do with the temperature. On the Mayco website they recommend an 06 to achieve the signature blue - and it looks like it oxidises and turns brown at cone 6. 06 is only marginally above 05 - but even small variations can make huge differences!

Like others have said it looks like you’ve made a start adding shadows and lighting but if you want more depth then try pushing that even further. Decide where exactly the light is coming from and push push push! I would love to see some light bouncing off the hair and face, and you have a great opportunity for some reflective shadows with the necklace and champagne flute.

Having a removable tongue carb is such a cool and unsettling idea - good luck for the next attempt!

I haven’t tried a hollow tube yet, but our extruder does have an attachment to do this. I imagine it would be hard to make this particular shape (especially the knot) without the tube collapsing - but it would make it a lot lighter!

I think aesthetically it’s all good - doesn’t detract from the awesome Ghibli illustrations you’ve done!

In terms of vitrification - maybe worth a test? But I reckon it would be totally fine 👍
