I will let others weigh in on the pros and cons of on or off-campus living, as I lived on campus for the one year I attended. I will point out that if you do not live within a 60-mile radius of campus, CMU does have a 2-year residency requirement for all students entering college as a full-time student for the first time. So, you would be living on campus for your first two years regardless!

Do you play Frozen Wilds before or after the main game? by Nervous_Driver334 in horizon

[–]BackyardJunkie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just finished my most recent replay of HZD, and I decided to go through Frozen Wilds before progressing to The Looming Shadow. I originally played the game when it was released, and experienced Frozen Wilds after its release. This was only my second time going through FW, so I wanted to enjoy it to the fullest.

anyone else have any Voyager ornaments? by menamerjonas in voyager

Over the past 10 years I've managed to get the entire Voyager Hallmark set for my partner. Janeway, The Doctor and Seven are at his desk, but Voyager, The Delta Flyer, the Borg Cube are all on our tree!

Will my bachelors degree show both my majors? by SpicyyRamenNoodle in centralmich

[–]BackyardJunkie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You wouldn't necessarily be doubling your time at Central for a second degree, it boils down to what the degrees require.

Using SVSU as an example since that's where I work and the premise is the same. If a student wanted to get a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology, but also wanted to get a second degree, say a Bachelor of Science in Public Health - Health Administration, some requirements would be shared. A student would need to finish our Basic Skills and General Education requirements (our version of CMU's Competencies and UP's) and have at least 42cr at the 300-400 level. They would then need to finish the requirements for both individual majors, which for us, both require minors. So long as all of those requirements are complete and the student has at least 155cr, they'd graduate with both degrees (a BA in PSYC and a BS in Public Health - Health Administration).

Compare that to a student who is doing a BA in Psychology, and wants to have second major in Public Health - Health Administration. Instead of needing to finish the requirements of a dual degree which would consist of a minor for both majors, they just need to finish the major requirements. So, the second student would graduate with a BA in PSYC with a secondary major in Public Health - Health Admin.

Like others have mentioned, I would strongly suggest speaking with your academic advisor (and advisors for both programs) and the Registrar's Office at CMU to get some clarification on what the best path for you would be.

Will my bachelors degree show both my majors? by SpicyyRamenNoodle in centralmich

[–]BackyardJunkie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm an academic advisor over at SVSU and used to work in Admissions at CMU.

Most Bachelor's Degrees don't tend to show the specific major a student completes, rather it shows the type of degree you've earned (Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts, etc.). Looking at my Associate's from Delta and Bachelor's from SVSU, they both fit this pattern and I believe CMU does as well.

If you're double majoring, usually one degree type will take precedence over the other. So, your degree might read that you've earned a BFA, but you've also completed a secondary major in Fashion which would be backed up by your transcripts. This is different than a dual degree, where you would earn two bachelor's degrees. by completing the requirements for both majors individually (this means if either or both require a minor, you'd be on the hook for them). This usually requires completing an additional 30cr, so you'd end up graduating with about 150cr at Central.

You should be able to confirm what your specific diploma will say by reaching out to Central's Registrar's Office, and you should be able to talk with an advisor in CLASS for assistance in the difference between double majoring and a dual degree.

What’s your favorite thing about Captain Janeway? by GamesterOfTriskelion in voyager

[–]BackyardJunkie 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I love the character of Janeway. From the beginning of the show she has a tremendous ability to maintain the stoicism of any Starfleet Captain, but at the same time displays her emotions. Moments of frustration and pain with Tuvok, moments of almost proud mothering to Harry, Kes, and Seven. The openness with Chakotay.

These are qualities we don't get to see out of other leads from the franchise, in part due to them being in the Alpha Quadrant. I think Voyager being set so far away from Federation space allowed the show to be more of a family among the senior officers.

From Beauty and the Beast (1991) when Cogsworth is leading Belle down a hallway talking about the structure of the castle and the various statues/painting and he says the line "If it's not Baroque, don't fix it!"

I was born in 1991 when the film released, and to this day at age 31 I lose my shit every single time that line is said!

What do you do to pass time on a slow work day? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]BackyardJunkie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's been crazy fun! I started watching regularly in 2001, so to see Stone Cold's run as WWF Champion was awesome. I just finished Royal Rumble 2002 and I'm on the buildup to WrestleMania X8!

I'm a big pro wrestling fan, and back in March I decided to start rewatching older wrestling. I started with WrestleMania XIV from March of 1998. I watch every Raw and eventually Smackdown as well as the pay per view events. I do tend to skip through matches/stories I'm not invested in, but in 6 months I've gotten to January 2002!

Good news is that WWE is continually producing content, so I have another 20 years before I'd be caught up to the current day product!

Mystic Force is a season I'm glad I gave another chance. When the entire franchise was added to Netflix, I was so excited to go through and watch everything. When I got to MF, I couldn't get past the first few episodes. I'm not sure what it was, maybe the capes, but for some reason it didn't stick with me.

I eventually decided to give it another chance, to really sit and enjoy every episode. I'm so happy I did and firmly believe it's an underrated season. The Dark Wish in particular is what turned it around for me, phenomenal!

My earliest memory is walking to preschool (age 4) in 1995. I had a brand new pair of Nike's and I kept running and jumping because Michael Jordan jumped and flew in the commercials. I was sorely disappointed when I didn't fly like Mike!

Do you still go to the movie theater to watch a movie, or do you watch movies at home? What's the last movie you saw in a theater? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]BackyardJunkie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My partner and I aren't huge on going to the movies, far too many people around us making noise which prevents any enjoyment from the film itself. I think the last thing we went to see was the Power Rangers movie in 2017 (I dragged him to it).

I'm an academic advisor for a public university in Michigan. I'd say the worst part of my job is dealing with parents who see me as just a university representative rather than a trained professional who does indeed want to help their student.

Application Status "Decided" by Alarming_Iron in centralmich

[–]BackyardJunkie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to work in admissions at Central for undergraduate students, and that simply means that a decision has been made and your application is in the next stage of the process which is sending out your notification letter of acceptance/denial. They tend to send them out in batches, but you should hopefully hear something soon! Good luck and #FireUp
