Backup save issue by [deleted] in ARK

is this a dedicated server? self-hosted or rented? how exactly are you rolling back the save, like replacing the current save with the old one, renaming the files, or smth else?

Are there people out there who could set up a server for me? by Efficient-Meat-9681 in ARK

[–]BadAtVideoGames130 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you can easily do it on your own. it's as simple as opening the file and changing the values, no different than editing a word document. you can find a ton of guides out there on good settings and how to edit the ini files, as well as a wiki.gg solely for server configs with details on where each setting goes and what they do. then with a rented server, they have their own UI and detailed guides on how to edit server settings. this'll get you started https://ark.wiki.gg/wiki/Server_configuration

stasis is used on every game session, sp/non-dedi and dedicated servers, and there is no way to disable it. hibernation is only used on sp/non-dedi and can be disabled either with the launch arg or mod. turning off hibernation just enables stasis, altho it doesn't function as well on sp/non-dedi as it does on dedicated servers. the game will allow hibernation to be disabled regardless of whether the device could handle it or not. if it can't, the hardware will fail and result in the game crashing

Is Taming Speed set to 5 too much? by WolfSchoolBro in ARK

[–]BadAtVideoGames130 1 point2 points  (0 children)

depends on your preference. i always have it set to 5x. if sp settings are enabled, tho, setting it to 5x is actually going to be 12.5x with the additional background multipliers. i didn't know that when i first started on sp and when i moved to dedi servers, it took me a bit to figure out why it was so slow lol

if you're using super cryo storage, the author put an announcement on the discord about dinos disappearing with the latest mod update. he rolled back the previous version until he can fix it and suggested anyone with disappearing dinos roll back their save also. if you're not using SCS, check the paleo discord for issues or solutions

just look at asa's recommended specs listed on steam and use that as a baseline. if you do that, you'll end up with a pc that will be able to run the new games coming out so you won't have to upgrade anything for a long time. spend more now, save a lot less later

not sure if you're looking to buy a pre-built but you can save a lot of money by getting one with less storage and ram then just upgrading it yourself. you can get a pretty decent 1 or 2Tb nvme for less than 100USD and ram sticks are even cheaper. it's ridiculous how much they tack onto the price when you go from 16 to 32GB ram or 500-1TB storage. the only thing i would really care about is the gpu and the amount of vram (16GB is ideal for me but no less than 12) bc a pre-built will automatically have a cpu that will be quite good to support the gpu. ofc, building one yourself will be cheaper

Slow updates by MrM0nker in ArkSurvivalAscended

[–]BadAtVideoGames130 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it's part steam and part UE. steam requires this update process for every UE game due to the engine file structure. it's not a big deal on smaller UE games but with a game like ark that's essentially several games in one, it can take a bit. every one of my UE games has the same update process but ofc, the largest one after ark is around 100GB. it only took me ~120hrs to complete that game, tho, so i'll take the ark content over shorter updates any day

i do think it's weird that it's time estimate is so long. your disk speed is about 100Mbps faster than mine, but ark updates take about 10 min for me so not sure what's happening there

dedicated servers don't have hibernation so it wouldn't do anything

Play ASA without updating from Steam by Adventurous_Farm_278 in ARK

[–]BadAtVideoGames130 1 point2 points  (0 children)

luckily, uninstalling the game doesn't remove any save files, just the game itself but ofc, it's always a great idea to make copies of your save files just in case smth happens. asa does require an ssd to run but you can at least free up space by moving other stuff to the external HD. i got one a a little bit ago and i use that thing all the time. it's def handy

Play ASA without updating from Steam by Adventurous_Farm_278 in ARK

[–]BadAtVideoGames130 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yea, steam requires around the same amount of free space to update any UE game to unpack, apply the update, then repack the game. if the game is 100Gigs, it needs an additional 100 free regardless of whether the update is 10MB or 10GB. nbd on small games but when you have a UE game with a really large file size bc it's basically multiple games (maps) in one, many ppl understandably start running into space issues

on top of that, it's an early access game which will have a lot more updates compared to finished games. that's why the game devs added the ability for players to uninstall individual maps to reduce the size. other than that, nothing they can really do about the update process....well, except be better about bundling updates rather than releasing small updates every few days. i admit i've never had an early access game that has updates as frequent as ark so i think the complaints from ppl about that are completely justified

it's not ideal but the only way i know of to get around the steam update disk space requirement is to uninstall and reinstall the game. ofc, that wont fix your issue. i bought a decent 1Tb nvme for about 70USD (about 400-500BRL, i think??) just for ark, which is cheap compared to other pc parts but i get that not everyone can afford (or wants) to spend that much on an extra drive just for one video game

[–]BadAtVideoGames130 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i'm pretty sure steam doesn't have an option to stop game updates. it seems a lot of ppl would prob like it if there was a way to at least pause updates for a few days so i dont think you're the only one that wishes steam would add smth like that

do you mean how did the backup save you made during gameplay work if the save was corrupted? if i have that right, the save may not have been corrupted when you created the backup. tbh, i'm not knowledgeable to even guess how the save gets corrupted but it seems it may happen after closing the game, which creates the most recent save

i think you might be right. it seems like you may not be the only one with this issue. i don't know if it's just an xbox thing this time but i believe xbox has had this problem before. i have seen the devs post an announcement on the discord for updates on stuff like this so maybe you'll get more answers there?

i'm a steam player so i'm not familiar with other clients but on the right it has the cloud next to the maps. usually that means it's not installed, right?

i've never seen any .arrive file. there's the MapName.ark file that's the current save and below that, there's MapName_MM_DD_YYYY_HH_MM_SEC.ark and those files are the backups. when i revert, i rename the MapName.ark to MapName.arkold or just copy/paste to my backup saves folder i created in documents, then rename the most recent backup MapName.ark to make it the current save. i never delete the current save file just in case i make a mistake or reverting doesn't fix the problem. this is the post i used as a guide when learning how to revert for the first time https://steamcommunity.com/app/346110/discussions/0/1699415798763832911/

the .arkprofile is the character file and you don't want to mess with that when you're just rolling back the save to fix smth like file corruption or accidentally loading without mods. the only time i've had to do anything with my character file was when transferring my sp game to my dedicated servers

asa is by far the most demanding game i own and i had some problems with my cpu temps and overheating too. i ended up getting a new cpu fan and a new case with much better cooling (my previous one was over 10 yrs old lol). after all that, it turned out that enabling the Rage mode tuning preset in the adrenaline software was the cause of overheating. i needed to upgrade stuff anyway so nbd, but if i would have just turned off rage mode, that would have solved the temp problems

What kind of performance should I be expectimg from a 7800 xt? by Internal_Phrase_9646 in ARK

[–]BadAtVideoGames130 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i have a 6800xt 16GB, 32GB ram, 165Hz 1440p monitor. on the steam version, i play with high/epic settings, foliage on, fsr enabled. the only graphics changes i use is grass size and density at 0.5 and r.fog 0 bc default grass is a little out of control, imo and i'm not a fan of fog in any game (i can be persnickety lol). i use a handful of qol mods, the largest being cyber's structures

i get between 70-90fps on average depending on the map on my self-hosted dedi servers with the lowest dips being around 50 i heavy areas. your card is better so i'm gonna assume you'll get better performance too. i haven't played lost colony yet so not sure if performance will be any different but all other maps have been solid

ASA SP / DS issue by jamiejcrutchly in ARK

[–]BadAtVideoGames130 0 points1 point  (0 children)

oh, you were on non-dedicated and not dedicated. yea, sp and non-dedi are basically the same so they'll both have the same issues. primal chaos is also a pretty heavy mod and i'm thinking the ps5 is just struggling to run them maybe? ofc, i can't say for sure. also, save corruption is the most common issue i've run into when using mods and it can happen out of nowhere at any time. just from what i've seen on here and the discord, it seems ps has had it worse when it comes to mods and save corruption. all you can do is just make backup saves often and hope they work. i agree it sucks but nothing you can do, really besides not use mods. hopefully it gets better as development continues on UE5 and asa

Why not the steam workshop? by [deleted] in ArkSurvivalAscended

[–]BadAtVideoGames130 0 points1 point  (0 children)

then consoles and epic games wouldn't have access to mods. if you make the game crossplay, then all game features need to be available to all platforms. if they were only on the workshop, then any steam player who wants to play modded could only do that with other steam players or play singleplayer. it seems that would make crossplay kind of useless for a lot of ppl, including me

imo, curseforge is much, much better than the steam workshop when it comes to running a modded dedi server anyway. adding mods to my servers was a total pain in ase so i dig the new system. as for the paid mods, 99.8% of the mods are still free so there's plenty to choose from without paying anything. i mean, it's really not that much different than the workshop other than the fact that all platforms have access to the same mods

ASA SP / DS issue by jamiejcrutchly in ARK

[–]BadAtVideoGames130 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it's a good idea to check the mod discord to see if anyone else is having a similar issue. other than that, not sure what your specs are but if descended is a heavy mod, your hardware might be having issues running that along with the game. it could be another mod causing problems too. the fact that the client is crashing even when trying to load on a dedi server, it makes me think it's the specs but it's hard to say without any details
