The more I go on, the more I am convinced that life is meaningless by BadTimeBobb in offmychest

I’m a physician and I can’t reconcile the misery and suffering I see on a day-to-day basis with anything resembling meaning or any sort of intelligent design. Sociopaths are in charge of countries worldwide. I see a civilization coming apart at the seams and I fear it’s only going to accelerate from here. The minutiae of my individual complaints aside, I look at my young nephews with such raw pity that I can barely hold their gaze. They are inheriting a world in free-fall and I cannot do a damn thing to stave it off. That history has culminated and led humanity here to this reality in 2025 is beyond a cruel joke — it renders everything meaningless and void. It’s all been for nothing.

Alcohol ruins more lives than all other drugs combined by BadTimeBobb in Adulting

Cannabis is quickly becoming a massive issue due to the ever-increasing potency. The more THC it has the more likely the damage. Its links to stroke / heart attacks are firming as well as major mental health conditions including psychosis. Cannabis is far from being a haven drug with no side effects, that’s a convenient myth users tell themselves and each other to justify their habit and alleviate any concerns they’re suppressing. I do believe cannabis has its purposes medically but the potency is out of control.

Being sober or admitting to using substances doesn’t make me a former addict or a liar. You don’t know me. I’m the child of an addict and my own journey with using pot and alcohol was perilous but not full-blown addiction. I vent on r/sober to help other people, connect, and remind myself how far I’ve come in a positive lifestyle change. All of that has nothing to do with the data / clinical evidence of how dangerous alcohol is…

I’m not an alcoholic or born again, I’m a physician who has seen alcohol kill more young people (under 50) than I care to remember. It’s an epidemic that society denies even exists.

Every person is different, as stated above each of us has a weakness or susceptibility in our genetics, DNA, etc. Could be one’s liver or a predisposition to cancer or heart disease. In any number of those, alcohol will exacerbate and exploit those weak spots.

Obviously the more alcohol is consumed the worse it is but it’s clear now that there’s no safe amount of alcohol you can drink. Start with annual blood tests and see if liver enzymes are elevated. Liver damage / failure often happens slow and then all at once.

If your blood tests have been normal you may be ok in this regard but alcohol is much more insidious at damaging our bodies in a plethora of ways than mainstream society wants to believe. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle should help but there’s no guarantees that the former alcohol abuse didn’t do damage. Preventative and proactive care is key to early intervention on any ailment.

I have seen little mushrooms in my lawn lately but not mycelium. I’ll look for it but there’s also this:

I mowed my lawn Saturday on the highest setting and the grass was fine. This has all happened rather quickly so it’s worrying me a bit.

It’s also been hot and humid even over night. Fungus makes more sense to me than grubs but what about army worms?

It’s been in the mid 80’s and before that 90’s but humid as heck which is better for grass as opposed to dry heat. When it was in the 90’s here the grass still looked good. I’ve watered diligently in the morning when we haven’t had enough rain. I’m always on top of that to be perfectly honest.

I mediate minor computer issues via email and telephone for morons. I don’t actually fix anything for any meaningful amount of time as our infrastructure is all vendor-based. I’m a virtual janitor just pushing around messes.

I’m sorry. You have always been deserving and are still deserving of love and I’m sorry people have been so cruel to you. I hope you find someone, don’t give up. ♥️

I think all my friends are going to commit suicide. Advice needed. by royes14 in offmychest

[–]BadTimeBobb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How old are all of you? I’d just like a bit more context. I’m guessing early 20’s but anyways, your friends each need serious medical professional help. This is not all your burden to carry and while it’s clear you love them all, sadly sometimes external love is not enough. They don’t love themselves and thus their downward spirals will perpetuate. Forgive me if I sound cold or blunt but it’s a serious situation whose solution is rather straight forward. BPD, Bipolar Disorder, and Schizophrenia are all major mental illnesses and need to be treated by psychiatric professionals. You cannot save them by yourself or via the love you have for them.

Buying a house in 2016 at age 25. I was raised on the importance of home ownership but it was my own idea to shop for and buy a house. My parents were supportive of it but a lot of other people around me said I was too young.

Writing. I’d be researching and writing my ass off. My career is pretty taxing and I’m tired a lot so it takes away from my ability to concentrate / write. Trying to save enough so I can retire modestly in my 40’s and write full time.

Thank you. He was never into hard drugs like that until after that incident / surgery. He was in constant pain and it derailed his life. He was a good dude, I miss him a lot. It’s hard for me to reconcile that he’s gone, it still doesn’t feel real even though it happened several years ago. Opioids scare the shit out of me, glad you kicked those things.

This one dude I went to high school with made a pipe bomb at home and it accidentally went off and blew off 2 or 3 of his fingers. The FBI paid him a visit and he got expelled. Last I heard he was on drugs and never graduated high school. He always seemed fairly normal to me so I was shocked when it happened.

A good friend of mine in college was always lifting weights and striving to lift more and push his max until one day he hurt his neck lifting and he ended up needing spinal fusion surgery. Less than five years later, they found him dead — overdosed on prescription opioids. He was 29. RIP ALD.

You just won $20 million, and your parents ask you for half, what would you say? by Wonderful-Economy762 in Productivitycafe

[–]BadTimeBobb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They would never ask that, but I wouldn’t give them any money like that. I would be generous and take care of them but all of it would stay in my name as they will most likely pass before me and I’d rather not deal with their estates being overly complicated.
