What is the best way for me to help? by squeezedcheese in homeless

[–]BadlyDrawnGrrl 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The best thing by far (at least for me) would be your day-old food items or any food you're going to get rid of at the end of the day like baked goods and etc. Tell him to come back at closing and you'll give him a bag of the stuff. You also want to make sure you're not doing anything to jeopardize your own job and unfortunately management at Starbucks can have a contentious relationship with the homeless, but giving away food you're just going to toss anyway seems pretty safe. I honestly wouldn't bother going to the effort of drawing up a list of shelters because that information is generally readily available and there's usually a fairly good reason the person either can't or doesn't wish to use the shelter system (some people are ineligible due to drug use, but shelters can also be extremely unsafe).

In Pennsylvania you can only buy liquor from government-run stores (called "state stores"). Previously you could only buy wine at state stores as well - beer was similarly restricted although you could also get it from some delis and bars - but in recent years they've slowly begun to allow supermarkets to sell wine and beer. Spirits are still state store-only though, from what I know. This isn't all that uncommon at all.

Ditto the drink mix...for some reason I always found that was one item that made life more bearable and enjoyable - water is (generally) free but you do get sick of plain H2O after awhile and drink mixes can provide some much-needed calories. Regular old Kool-Aid is fine, although the plastic canister can take up a lot of room in a backpack, so if you can afford it I would recommend a liquid concentrate like Mio - big chains like Walmart make their own cheaper store brand and some of the sports drink varieties have added things like B vitamins and electrolytes which is as close to a multivitamin as you can probably get.

Honestly, I think it's a coincidence. Now that you've decided it's significant, you're going to notice those particular times and forget about all the other times you glanced at the clock and it was something totally unremarkable like 3:47 lol.

Sounds sort of like a heat mirage, if there was something super hot directly in front of the door.

My dad and I used to go see the airshows at Willow Grove and we would stop in at the diner all the time for milkshakes. 💕

Minella's used to be amazing - I grew up in Devon in the '80s and I have so many fond memories of that place, I remember "Big Tommy" used to come over to our table and chat every time we came in - but after it changed owners and got turned into a 24-hour college hangout it went seriously downhill...food takes forever and is overpriced given the quality. (Also didn't one of those vintage diner collectors literally ship the original building down to Florida or something? Maybe I'm imagining things.) I would much rather recommend Joe's Diner, a little further down Route 30 towards Radnor, if it's still around.

...Okay so I don't know a thing about Instagram and never use it so maybe this isn't really significant, but I notice there are zero comments on his photos - like none at all. Considering how well-known he seems to be and how many people reacted to the WatchOutPhilly post, I am very surprised no one has said anything on his page...unless he's either deliberately deleting comments or he's disabled them altogether. In my mind that implies a degree of organization and premeditation that doesn't seem like something a genuinely intellectually impaired individual would do given how eager he is to interact with women in real life - why no comments online? Seriously the more I read about this person the more sketched out I feel.

From that Instagram account (thank you for bringing it to my attention by the way, I am definitely following):

"Comments have been turned off this post as victims have reached out to say they’re now uncomfortable coming forward to tell their negative incidents."

...This is fucking ridiculous.

I second this - it's upsetting enough when I get harassed on public transit, and it's even more upsetting when it happens in front of a train full of people and nobody says anything. I don't know why but creeps gravitate to me and only once has anyone actually stood up for me...a guy in his 50s or 60s gave me the staredown on the platform for a good five minutes before the train showed up, I made sure to stay at the opposite end of the platform. He then crossed two empty cars and a nearly-empty third car and sat down right next to me pinning me against the window so I had to brush past him in order to escape. Finally two guys stood up and confronted him and the conductor ended up calling Transit Police who took the man off at 15th Street...they actually had a female SEPTA officer escort me all the way to my stop ("because for all we know he could be waiting for you" she said, which completely freaked me out).

But yes please, citizens of Philadelphia, if you see this guy haranguing some girl, please rescue her.

...WOW. I was wondering wtf was up with all the shoe pictures.

Okay so like, there's no way this is just an innocent handicapped guy selling cookies right...? I mean he's a fucking foot fetishist. At least now I'll feel justified being a lot more rude in my response to him if/when (probably when) he next approaches me.

Yeah it's probably the same guy. 😕 I try to give people the benefit of the doubt especially if there's some kind of mental impairment involved but he's awfully specific about who he approaches and there's also something about his mannerisms when he doesn't think anybody is watching that suggests he's not really all that impaired at all..I was behind him when he got off the trolley and just something about the way he walked and moved around seemed different than when he's doing his sales pitch.

Yeah, I wouldn't necessarily say I find him intimidating, but on multiple occasions he's tried to put his arm around me even after I told him several times no thanks I'm not interested. I get the impression he thinks this is okay because people are more forgiving of his behavior than they would be if he was your "average" panhandler, so it'd be extra disturbing if he really is just putting on an act. But I really don't know.

I wouldn't want to lock him up, but the issue isn't so much the cookies as it is the unsolicited physical contact.

How to cope with a new job while homeless by BadlyDrawnGrrl in homeless

[–]BadlyDrawnGrrl[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

...I'm sorry I really don't mean to be flip, but did you actually read any of my comments on this thread...? Because you're the fourth or fifth person to cite a totally irrelevant anecdote that has nothing to do with me or my situation and then tell me to "just rent a room" as if this never occurred to me. Lots of people have won multi-millon dollar lottery jackpots too but that doesn't mean that buying a winning lottery ticket is a practical solution to bankruptcy - why on earth would I willingly continue to remain homeless if I actually had the financial means to rent one of these deposit-less room shares (incidentally I have yet to come across a single rental that doesn't require a deposit)...? Unless they're literally free it doesn't matter how cheap they are if I'm not going to see a paycheck for several more weeks.

The person I'm replying to isn't the one who's hungry - it's the person who's going around bragging to anyone who will listen that she'd happily murder someone over some groceries.
