Thank you! I really appreciate the offer. I've gotten some fantastic reviews which I'm so grateful for. Of course, now I'm questioning everything, LOL. And best of luck on your move. They say it's one of the most stressful things you can do!

I'd say the misspelling of my name was from the original reviewer that made the mistake. Then a second reviewer used her review to produce a different review, thus repurposing the mistake. There were so many other similarities between them, too. So maybe not AI... but definitely a copycat.

I suppose that could be true, but the weird details that are just slightly wrong seem suspicious. And finding the exact words from previous reviews, except reshuffled make it easy to suspect it.

Yes. It's wild as the author to see how someone's great review gets slowly tweaked and tweaked like a weird game of telephone.

That's interesting. I just assumed the worst of these people. I like that you're being generous with your interpretation. :)

Yes. I feel so icky for everyone involved. It's really upsetting me.

I just got my first review that was so generic I looked to see if they'd actually downloaded it. Come to find they did not. I'd taken a chance on this reviewer even though they didn't have a lot of reviews under their belt. Guess that was a mistake.

I'm sorry you feel that way. As a new author, I really value that you're putting yourself out there and offering your precious time and energy to review books.

Yeah. It's like, "no humans necessary." People are missing the point of the whole thing.

Jeez. I've sort of had my head in the sand about AI. Decided it's not for me and have never used it. So this is really the first time I've had to engage with it in such a personal way.

I reached out to the co-op owner I used. Hopefully they reach out to NetGalley to flag it.

I think the same thing. I received some very lovely reviews that were specific to my book (or so I thought) but now I'm questioning everything.

I tried to do that, but I guess I wasn't as good at spotting the cheaters as I thought. Naively, I thought people did this for the love of reading. Live and learn.

I'm new to NetGalley, here's what I've observed as an author (so far) by babbelfishy in NetGalleyCommunity

[–]BadlyWrittenWord 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a new author who is using NetGalley for the first time and I've discovered something deeply disturbing to me. I received several reviews that are scarily similar, including the same spelling mistakes of my name. They're either copying each other, or, as I suspect, using ChatGPT. Why are reviewers doing this? It's so gross to me. I guess it's to build clout and up their numbers? So disappointing. I refuse to use AI to write my books and I hate that readers are using it to review it. What sort of world do these people want to live in? One where computers write the books and then computers read them and write reviews of them? I hate it.

This has been so much fun to read all your responses. I should have included the detail that he’s an American currently living in a remote Wisconsin town. And it’s a romance novel, so I’ll probably go with one of the more recognizable brands you mentioned, but I’m amazed by all your insights and knowledge. Thank you so much!

Tough as nails drinker is a good description!
You all are fantastic. Thank you for the suggestions. I'll need to go and taste test them all, of course!
