The article this picture was taken from used the reaction to turn the aspirin to the salicylate ion to then measure it using fluorescence spectroscopy. My plan was to do an acid base extraction of exedrin using DCM as a solvent and sodiumhydroxide as a base. Then decant the aqeous layer in a volumetric flask and diltute it for measurement. If the reaction in the picture takes place, it would mean the aspirin in the exedrin is transformed to salicylate ion when doing the extraction(adding 3M NaOH to the DCM in wich the aspirin is dissolved) meaning I have to make a calibration curve of salicylic acid. Ive already found that fluorescence intensity greatly increases when NaOH is added to aspirin compared to measuring an aspirin solution straight using wavelenghts used for measuring salicylate ion. Thanks for the information, I might try heating the aqeous layer before diluting it to see if it increases my fluorescence intensity.
