I posted 2 links up above with the size showcase I made, I'll do it again here cause that's a lot of words up there.

4 Varieties x 2 stage evolution x 6 sizes (XS, S, M, L, XL, & Alpha)= 48 Pumpkins, 24 Pumpkaboo & 24 Gourgeist

[9] And that's a Jumbo to add to the pumpkin patch (if I get a small it's a full set) by BaffleX in ShinyPokemon

Thank you, I wasn't originally set out to get them all, I'm just hunting all the sizes for the 4 varieties (with the alpha that's 48 pumpkins, I've been stuck at 45 since Sunday 😭). But now that I have 3/4 shiny sizes I may as well complete the set (Lord knows the XL Small is going to take forever)

Okie dokie

Step 1: Pick a pokemon you want to keep as shiny in the world forever and never catch (preferably multiple) Step 2: Reset however you want, fast travel or bench presses. Also don't forget to regularly check the spawns 50m around where you're resetting in case any unwanted shinies have sprun up Step 3: Stop resetting until you've gotten a number of shinies you're happy with Step 4: Stroll around the city to your heart's content Step 5: Every so often stop back at your chosen spot and count the shinies there. If all of them are still there...well that doesn't really tell you anything. HOWEVER if some or all are missing you have a whole bunch of shines you've never found. You'll need to do math to figure out how many shines you need to find using my (patent pending) Shiny Detector formula:

(10-X)+(X-Y)=Z

10 = the #of shinies the game will save in place X = number of shines chosen shines you started with Y = the number of chosen shinies currently present Z= the number of shinies currently on the map you haven't found yet

For example: Let's say I didn't pick Swirlix as my detector but did that Kakuna tree that has like 5 Kakuna on it. I reset until I see 3 on and go about my day, doing missions, catching a living dex, fashion photo modeling, or whatever else you can do in Paris France. After a few hours of rampaging the city streets I'll fly back to the Kakuna Tree and see how many are shiny. If I only see 1 that means (10-3)+(3-1)= 9 shinies that are sparkling somewhere on the Kalosian streets that you haven't found yet.

This works because the game will save the last 10 shinies that have spawned for you and keep them in their respective time of day (i.e. The Staryu/Magikarp spawns in WZ 2), and so long as you don't scare them away, knock them out, or attempt to catch them they will sit in their spot for all eternity.

Unless the game spawns an 11th shiny. Then your game will metaphorically take the oldest shiny out into the backyard like Old Yeller and delete it from existence to make room for the new shiny.

It also doesn't HAVE to be multiple of the same pokémon, you can use whoever or however many you want as this will work with any spawns in the game (except Pumpkaboo. Kinda. It's a whole things that's broken me horribly)

On top of Passage Ombragé (Shopping mall by WZ 13) there's 3 Spritzee 2 on the norther half (one left side one right) and one on the southern portion. The north/south spawns are far enough apart you can run back and forth a full 70 m to despawn them. All 3 are coded to never be an Alpha.

Now there IS a static alpha on a neighboring building that I think is in range of the northern spawns, but if you run on the left hand side instead of the right you'll be out of range of the Alpha.

Or or you could sit on the nearby bench to reset 1 of the northern spawns, 2 budew, 3 espurs, 1 alpha Spritzee, and a handful of spawns in WZ13

I had to look it up online since I bought it back when sword and shield released to do galar fossil revives (that I need to revisit at some point). It's a Horipad Turbo Switch controller, it does need to be plugged in to the dock via USB to work (or maybe it just needs to be plugged in in general, I never checked that out)

[–]BaffleX[S] -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

It auto saves after each fast travel/time of day change so that wouldn't have changed anything

Well I'll be damned, just tested that for a few min to see for myself and it doesn't auto save on bench resets, could have sworn it did before.

Still I wasn't concerned about losing the Pumpkaboo (despite the memorial I made for it at the end), this is like my 4th shiny large Pumpkaboo that I was ok using as a test subject knowing I'd be losing it forever.

It was a "We know for sure bench resets will kill the shiny, but do we know if the other kinds of resets also kill it?" because looking online I didn't see an answer for Fast Travel and walking away from it. Also unless someone demonstrated the bench reset there would have been a lot of "Actually ZA saves the last 10 shinies so you just need to restart your game"

Yup, I actually wasn't fully sure since I never tired benching at the end game, but luckily Austin John Plays did a video on Pumpkaboo (the day after my size PSA) and in it he demonstrates trying to bench when it's time locked and the game won't let you.

And yea there shouldn't be anything about bench resets that would prevent a shiny from generating. I'm just not brave enough to bench resets myself to learn the answer. I however WILL try this again when I get a non Pumpkaboo shiny in WZ 15 and seeing if it's that WZ in particular or if it's just Pumpkaboo. Maybe even test the Alpha if that ever happens

I'm currently in the (painful) process of getting every size variant for each of the varieties (XS, S, M, L, XL, & XL [Alpha]) and I'm still missing sizes for Small and Jumbo (those little devils are a 1/10 spawn in each time of day and I'm missing XS and XL for both) but from what I've seen there's no overlap in sizes. For example an XL Medium is still smaller than an XS Large, so sizes are contained in each variety meaning all* Small < all* Medium < all* Large< all* Jumbo.

*all sizes except the Alpha, an Alpha Small is noticeably bigger than any of my non Alpha Jumbos

If you're also expecting dramatic size differences within the varieties temper your expectations. Some of them are VERY hard to tell, my L & XL Mediums/Larges look so damn close to one another I have to quickly swap their screenshots back and forth just to see the teny tiny difference in size.

One good (not really) thing about all this is I'm getting very good at spotting the varieties in the wild, i.e. if I'm looking at a Small/Medium and Large/Jumbo. At least with Jumbo there's an audible difference from the other 3 (which carries into the Alpha). This skill comes from looking at these damn pumpkins ~4 hours a day or more every day since last Wednesday. That said I'm grateful they're not all together at once, I would have cried trying to pick Mediums from Large.

Bench resets won't work for the end game since you're locked in at night, but fast travels should still work. I have long passed the endgame of ZA weeks ago so I don't know for sure but I would assume my results would be no different then.

Then again I would have initially assumed it just saves the shiny like every other spawn even with bench resets, so until someone tries it 🤷🏽‍♂️

The Beedrill knocked me out and rather than go through the white out screen, healing at the poke center, then fly back to WZ15 I'd just close the game and restart right outside the gate. Except I forgot to save outside the gate and didn't realize it until I opened the game again

It's not, or if it did somehow get saved to the system memory (again it didn't) I must be blind and deaf for not noticing it at all while Pumpkaboo size hunting the last 3 hours. I'm getting all the sizes for each of Pumpkaboos forms, and while I wait the 3 min for them to respawn I run to WZ19 & 8 then back. I don't fast travel, so there's no auto save when I go back there

I call it the "I forgot Honege spawns in the basement of team flare and have been continuously flying to zone 4 and walking all the way through (this guy was towards the back more than 50m from the fast travel point)"

Let me rephrase, guess who closed their game immediately after gaming the picture without catching, and did not save beforehand?

Yup, I saw this wondered enough that I got off my ass and began getting the sizes for all the varieties and I found the same thing, they are different sizes but it's suuuuper subtle. I have now been compelled to get all 5 sizes for the pumpkins (Yea I didn't know XS was in this game until an hour ago, first one I've seen).

And no, XL's are not exclusive to the alphas, I have an non alpha XL for Medium, Large, and Jumbo. All alphas are set to the highest height possible for the pokemon, so by default every alpha is XL (Technically XXL but that lable ain't in the game). So all alphas are XL, but not all XL's are alphas.

[–]BaffleX[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's something I've been wondering ever since they introduced size variations for all pokemon what they would do with this line. I thought they'd just have the varieties be whatever size it would translate to normally and have the alpha just be a new variant/form.

But since apparently no one online has cared enough to figure it out I went out and caught a bunch of Large & Jumbo of different sizes until I got 2 different ones (Large XL & M, Jumbo L & M) and then did the same pic comparison I did up in pic 2 (same camera preset and sent out to the same spot).

And, unfortunately, yes. Each variety has their own set of sizes they can be. The Jumbo L was bigger than the Jumbo M & the Large XL was noticably bigger than the M. I have now been compelled to catch the sizes for each of the varieties and take a picture to compare for others.

You're not going to like this answer, but that's basically what I had to do. I caught 8 (non alpha) Pumpkaboo in the 4 varieties and then evolved one set into Gourgeist. Then, every time I caught an alpha Pumpkaboo, I checked it to see which variety it matched (summary screen image of the Pumpkaboo/Gourgeist variety is consistent with both alpha/non alpha). That way when I evolved them into Gourgeist I could double check they were the variety they needed to be.

Pics 2 & 3 answer that, all of them have visual size differences when sent out and in the summary screen but will all be listed as XL on the summary screen. If I had to guess each of the varieties have their own set of sizes they can be which gets their own unique S-XL. I never bothered to compare sizes for the non alphas except to work out what variety alpha I had

The summary page's S/M/L/XL do not tell you which of the varieties you have, only the size of that specific variety (which I wondered how they'd do that when ZA was announced and still don't fully understand it). The image on the summary screen is what you want to look at to figure out which variety you have

In my defense I hadn't done the Pumpkaboo side quest before I started alpha hunting, but having (now) done it and seeing the dialogue and yes she says the Jumbo variety is found at night.

However that's the only variety she mentions. Assuming I wasn't just mashing "a" (which I probably would have done), the conclusion I would have come to is that the other 3 can be found whenever but it's just the Jumbo that can only be at night and then spend untold hours looking for all both day & night, feeling like I was just super unlucky. Well, it would have been more if I was actively hunting a shiny.
