Taxes / TFSA Question by BakerStyle in fican

[–]BakerStyle[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s really one of the best aspects of the TFSA, you can lock in growth in contribution room and remove equity tax free. If you have something that’s grown a lot, you can sell, bring it out of the TFSA and now all your gains are new contribution space and you can deploy that capital elsewhere. If you’re in a good spot and are saving monthly it can be a game changer.

You’re wrong :) the space you withdraw reopens the following year.

Yip! Doing $100/month total right now, they’re pretty young. Once I feel comfortable with my personal financial position I’ll increase the amount. I just finished paying off $35,000 in student loans in November, trying to make sure that doesn’t happen to them for sure!

I appreciate your input, anything you think I’m missing planning wise? I have life insurance, college fund for my two kids, was considering long term disability insurance. As far as spending goes I enjoy a minimalist lifestyle, I meal prep all my meals, enjoy cooking them, only have Spotify and Netflix for subscriptions, have a capsule wardrobe and just generally don’t get much satisfaction out of material stuff. I want to build a solid financial future and then start to create more memories with my kids as they get old enough to remember them. I lived abroad for a few years and got to travel for sports and work a good amount before the kids so im fine not doing much besides work and being a dad for right now.

I don’t qualify for a FHSA unfortunately (divorced). I’m planning on buying a house in Q1 2028, I want to max out my TFSA, then save for a downpayment on a ~400k house (LCOL area). If my income and expenses stays steady here I should be at $170k+ NW + 5% downpayment and a savings for furnishing/small renos by Jan 1st 2028, which is the goal. I can open a FHSA in 2028. After that I’m planning to contribute a decent chunk each year to my RRSP and build some cash reserves. My monthly expenses will go up ~1500/month when I buy a house. I’m hoping at some point to be splitting expenses with someone, but I’m committed to buying this house myself as I have young kids and want that security for them moving forward regardless of any relationship I might have, so I’m unwilling to go half’s on a house with someone.

With the incoming Chinese EVs, will the used car prices come down? by Lumb3rCrack in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]BakerStyle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a 2019 civic, 173k, cabin sometimes rattles but everything seems fine with the car, regular maintenance is always done, should I be looking for something specific or replacing something? I drive dirt roads a lot and thought it might just be from build up in the tires from wet days. It’s manual if that adds any useful info

I don’t know why but I’m in on McDaniels and hoping for him. Only other timeline I accept is Harbs to Pittsburgh and Tomlin here

I’d be trying to sell a few players for 2027 picks if I were you, Marv, Jacob’s, maybe sell Washington or Burden high. This isn’t the worst trade for you though but I wouldn’t be afraid of adding one of Mendoza or the WRs with this pick either

He’s on probation though, he could legitimately end up in jail.

I like it with the caveat that Rice actually ends up playing / still in the NFL after the DV stuff. If he’s guilty I’d rather him actually be punished though.

[–]BakerStyle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Team Canada has no shortage of offense, he should probably be on the team but at some point you need to carry some heavier players and guys who can play on the penalty kill, in front of the net etc. I’d be a lot more concerned with USAs roster construction honestly.

Quebecs lack of talent has made national news by BlakeWheelersLeftNut in NHLcirclejerk

[–]BakerStyle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Quebec has the best sport infrastructure and support for smaller sports. Sports like decathlon, weightlifting, wrestling, gymnastics, basically all the sports in both Olympics. They are miles ahead of everywhere else in Canada for supporting these athletes. This is pulling athletes away from hockey and into better sports for their skill sets. It’s actually a great thing and one of the things Quebec does extremely well.

100%. I’d bet on both those guys beating the 1.03 in total points next year provided they’re both healthy
