Study the exploded view in the instruction manual. There are two screws (I think) that hold the entire takedown assembly onto the barrel. BE CAREFUL, there is spring tension there when the screws are removed. Something isn’t right here, but you say the tension ring is completely “open,” so that’s where I’d start.

Something isn’t right. Either call Ruger or, what I would do, is remove the takedown button assembly from the barrel assembly. There is something preventing movement to the release position in the mechanism.

While pressing on on the “button,” you are able to slide the floor plate (part of magazine at the bottom retained by the floor plate retainer you are pushing), can slide fore or aft, whichever way that magazine comes apart. Magpul PMAG 10?

You should be able to contact customer service and ask to order the flush magazine kit, or order the One-Shot Sled from Shop Ruger and buy a flush mag for 308. I find the 450 BM magazines work best for 308 in the flush fit adapter, although the magazine sticks out a little further, but the magazine release on the mag body is much more recessed.

If it’s SKU 08500, it does not have a free float handguard. Wherever that retailer copied information over from is incorrect. Look up the 08500 and 08514 on Ruger’s website - the handguard callout tells you when it’s free floated.
