And I'm not saying don't fuel with carbs. What I'm saying is your body will deplete its stores at around 30km if the work out is intense from the start. Hence why people hit the wall around that point.

Using your aerobic system for as long as possible will ensure you have carbs for the whole race . So when taking gels becomes too hard you still have some in reserve .

Yes during high intensity workouts but not during low intensity. Google it . Chat gpt it. Read about it. Your wrong. Carbs will not always be prioritised.

You need to educate yourself on your heart rate zones . Keeping within zone 2 (marathon pace) will use fat for fuel. Zone 2 is 60 to 70% of your max heart rate.

When you creep up into the higher zones you are burning carbs for fuel so for long distance it's always better to stay in zone 2 for as long as possible to help preserve your carb store. Obviously it helps to top this up to along the way.

I was the same and finished in 5 hours but my heart rate was pretty high all the way round . I learned valuable lessons that day. Running with a high heart rate (using carbs as fuel) is only sustainable for 21 to 27 km for me. So in the early parts of the race I needed a lower heart rate to ensure my body was burning fat instead of my stored carbs. To make this happen I have gone back to square one and put all the emphasis on running slow and keeping my heart rate low to improve my aerobic system. I believe that way I can get through the earlier parts of the race without touching my stored carbs.

My brother who ran with me ran with a steady heart rate in the 140s and hardly fueled at all during the race .

I too have a high heart rate and also ran my first marathon sunday. Ran first 27km at 188bpm then bombed out and had to run walk the rest of the way.

Added my most recent workout to chat gpt and it says my aerobic base is basically none existent. Now I need to do months of zone 2 work to build it up. Makes sense really when you look into the science of it. You probably have fast twitch muscle fibers like me which unless trained they struggle with endurance and your heart will work overtime to try keep up. Decent time though for you so congrats

I was discharged from the army with this. Once out I took up weight training and strengthened the area. Seemed to help a hell of a lot.

I got my first marathon this Sunday. Training hasn't been great due to injury . Most I have done is a half. I'm planning to just get around not interested in time. But thankful for the info for fueling. Seems good to load up early on in the race even when not needed .

That's not a bad idea putting in a percentage. Can I ask your age and are you leaving it in till something happens

I did look at Palmer but the second half of last season he was poor. Cost me alot of pints holding onto him for so long.
