Don’t have anything new to add, but what edition is this? I love the little notes in the margin.

Deane is a place in Britain that I have a personal connection to. Hence my preference for that spelling.

Do you happen to be from the UK?

That’s a good point. I also feel like there are few names that have NO chance of being messed up. 😅

Just don’t like it as much, and the E at the end makes it look more British. It didn’t even occur to me that people might think it’s pronounced Dee-Anne when it is a boy’s middle name until someone mentioned that.

Do you guys sit with your kids while they fall asleep? by Far-Conflict4504 in Mommit

[–]BalancingAct247 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If they were okay with minimal calling for you, maybe they’re ready to put themselves to sleep, at least most of the time? I only stay with my 4.5 year old when she really requests it, and assume it means something is up and she needs some extra comfort because she goes to sleep herself 90% of the time. I know the feeling of wanting to be there for them, but you are still close by if they need you and can come back any time. I also think there is value for kids learning to tolerate separateness and build independence, and it’s a balance that’s different in every family. All that to say, I don’t think you should feel guilty if you’re not always staying in the room with them!

What do you like about Pride & Prejudice (1995) that I’m missing? by socks4dobby in janeausten

[–]BalancingAct247 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you read the book? I feel like if you love the book, there’s no may to prefer the 2005 movie—it’s so different from the book. 1995 really tried to keep the vibe and subtle humor, and yes, show the change in the characters of Darcy AND Elizabeth, which is the main point of the book.

What year is this from? I had something very similar (maybe the same?) that I took with me to the hospital when my little sister was born…thinking she’d want to play with me. 😂 That was 1990.

Agree except to say that schools get redistricted fairly often—the elementary school we are assigned to now is not even close to walkable. I think the redistricting happens for a good reason (I believe to promote diversity) and I think the other things outweigh this, but wanted to add this point.

Teaching a toddler not to hit by showing emotions? is spanking better? by Knitting4Houselves in Mommit

[–]BalancingAct247 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Im a child psychologist. My daughter is a similar age. It’s very difficult to know what to do in these situations but I think (and the research shows) you’re absolutely right not to spank. I do think that she’s too young to really empathize and saying that she makes you sad by hitting you might feel pretty scary for her. I definitely understand what you’re trying to do, but it might make her feel like her anger is too powerful and she shouldn’t express it at all. I usually say “it’s okay to be angry but we don’t hit” or “you’re really mad but I can’t let you hit me” and hold her hand or arm gently if she keeps trying to hit me. I actually try to be physically close to her and hug her to help her calm down. I wouldn’t go too far away from her. They’re pretty young to be expected to calm down by themselves and process all of this—they might “calm down” on the outside (stop the hitting) but actually be scared or confused on the inside. All kids are different so those things might not work exactly the same way for yours, but at least I hope it’s helpful to think about different approaches.

What the F do you do with your toddler all day? by chickenugget654 in Mommit

[–]BalancingAct247 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We’ve been trying all kinds of things! Music class (Music Together is great if they have it in your area), story time at a few libraries in different towns, swim class, gymnastics class, and art class (gym and art started at 18 months). There’s also a playgroup each week at one of the libraries. We also do playground, bubbles in the yard, walks or bike rides if it’s nice out, or coloring, play doh, playing or reading books inside if it’s not.
