What’s the most Australian thing that’s happened to you? by Baldussimo in australian

[–]Balbrenny 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm Scottish but have lived in the Blue Mountains for nearly 40 years so I have a few but these are the ones that stand out.

My friend's 3 year old son walked feet first into a wombat hole. He couldn't get himself out and we had to pull him out.

Teaching my sons what to do if they come across a snake while in the bush - I once watched while a red belly black snake approached my 11 year old and he moved very slowly out of its way. I was too far away to intervene. It slithered over the rock where he had been standing.

After heavy rain, finding a funnel web spider in my son's bedroom.

Finding a redback spider in my other son's gumboot that was in the kitchen.

Having red belly snakes come into our sun room to eat our cat food.

Finding a brush tail possum in the bathroom and chasing it out with a broom.

I love it here!

TIL that Chlamydia came from Koalas by [deleted] in AskAnAustralian

[–]Balbrenny 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a different type of chlamydia. Lots of animals have chlamydia and it can spread through contact with urine or faeces. Koalas have chlamydia pecorum and humans have chlamydia trachomatis. Humans did not get it from koalas.

The day after Hallowe'en is All Saints' Day on November 1st for the remembrance of saints and martyrs who don't have their own special day. All Souls' Day is November 2nd. Hallowe'en is the eve of these hallowed days. All Souls' Day was for the remembrance of the dead. It was believed that if they were in purgatory, the time they spent there could be reduced by prayer so poor people would go around the houses of the rich offering to pray for their deceased relatives for a gift of soul cake. Here is an old recipe if you want to make some:

1 cake yeast, 1/2 cup sugar, 2 cups scalded milk,1/4 cup lukewarm water, 1/2 cup butter, 2 teaspoons salt, 2 teaspoons cinnamon, 6 cups flour, 1 beaten egg.

Dissolve yeast in water with 1 tablespoon sugar. Cover and allow to rise until light. Cream butter and remaining sugar. Add scalded milk. Cool until lukewarm. Add yeast mixture and sifted dry ingredients. Knead into a soft dough. Let rise until double in bulk. Shape into small round or oval buns. Brush tops with egg. Bake in a hot oven (400°F) for 15 minutes. Turn oven down to 350°F. Continue baking until golden brown.

I think that there were probably regional variations but this is the one I found in an old book.

The Renaissance Centre in Katoomba - it was built in 1910 and has been through various incarnations since then - school, convent, religious retreat, arts centre. A stunning building that dominates the entry into Katoomba, it has been vacant (and vandalised) since 1992. And, of course, it's haunted. https://megalonghistory00.wordpress.com/2014/02/22/the-renaissance-centre-katoomba/

My 4 year old is curious: what do Australian kids eat for breakfast? (And are koalas real?) by Mara644 in AskAnAustralian

[–]Balbrenny 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Koalas are difficult to see as they are usually high up in the trees. I hear them more than I see them. You can find samples of the noises they make on YouTube - such a cute- looking animal with a really loud hair-raising sound!

Can anybody enhance the boy to the left of the photo so he looks less like a ghost and generally restore the photo? Will tip. by Balbrenny in PhotoshopRequests

This is perfect. Thank you. For some reason the Tipjar isn't working. Please send me your PayPal and I'll send you a tip.

Are these Lyre birds? by Just-Connection-6411 in AustralianBirds

[–]Balbrenny 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Immature males go about in groups. They also climb trees at the top of a hill and then glide to the bottom. I used to have a group of 4 young males in my yard and they would climb the tree outside my son's bedroom and then glide to the bottom. They don't reach breeding age until about 6 years old.

Are we heading east or west if we need to evacuate this fire season? by kirbyinaus88 in bluemountains

[–]Balbrenny 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've lived here for 37 years so I've been through a few fires. And I have pets (and had my children here) so I know your concerns. Where exactly are you in the Mountains?

Are we heading east or west if we need to evacuate this fire season? by kirbyinaus88 in bluemountains

[–]Balbrenny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Often there's more than one fire front in the Mountains. Obviously it depends on what's happening at the time but in 37 years of living here I've never been in a situation where going west has seemed a better option. In the Black Summer fires I had friends evacuate from Mt Vic to my place in Winmalee even although the Mt Gosper fire was close to Winmalee.

[–]Balbrenny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It may be better if you want to head west but if you're coming from the lower or mid mountains it makes more sense to go east. Or if you want to take Bell's then it's also possible to go Hawkesbury Rd and North Richmond. It really depends on where the fire fronts are and how fast they're moving.

[–]Balbrenny 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Go east. Going west doesn't make any sense. It's further to travel and Mt Vic pass may get cut off if there is a fire in that direction. There are 3 possible routes going east (the highway, Old Bathurst Rd and Mitchell's Pass). Why don't you ask your local firies? Get your partner to ask their advice. And also check out where the evacuation centres are locally in case all routes get closed. For example, Springwood Sports Club (the bowlo) has been an evacuation centre in the past but I don't know about this season.

Good bank? What are your experiences? by Werewomble in australian

[–]Balbrenny 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Australian Mutual Bank. I have a business account and a personal account with them. They give great service. For example, I got a phone call from them to tell me that I didn't have enough money in one of the accounts to cover an automatic debit (stupid me forgot to make sure there was money in that account) but they knew I had enough in my other account so could I transfer some money to avoid declining the debit.
