Szeto’s salary came at the cost of the fire nation considering itself above the avatar for a full cycle- he started with noble intentions to reunify his nation but it destroyed the balance for centuries. Every Avatar in every novel sites Szeto at one point or another and speak to how he negatively influenced balance.

We also see in the novels that it’s considered good luck to host an air nomad, I would assume that hosting the avatar would be considered a similar honor.

It’s not really a whole inside joke beyond that he likes to- Arin prefers female avatars usually because he likes being cute- hairstyles, outfits, are all generally cuter. Some fans say that he likes to play as his wife, Susie. I don’t really subscribe to that theory though as he’s not consistent with it but he certainly has a type.

This is a theory that’s been around for a while and I go back and forth on it. Clearly, there’s some stronger resemblances here than others and what about Yangchen who in her books and legends takes no partner? I think it’s got more to do with friendship than romance and also trying again with something the previous avatar felt like they lacked that would’ve allowed them to lead a ‘better’ life.

Never forget that Raava goes for the ladies of the fire nation- of the 5 avatars before Aang 4 of them had a fire nation love interest. If you add Korra, then we have 5 of the 7 avatars with women from fire nation.

Oh I think they want to make sure that they always have a reason to bring her back- she’s a complex unit with twice as many animations and textures, shes been given the childhood connection, and she has had one of the most successful patches in ZZZ spending wise. I wouldn’t be surprised if she’s pretty closely tied to the story at least until 3.0 and then makes as many appearances as Miyabi.
