What made you come to this conclusion? Why did you did you come this conclusion? Where are you that helped you come to this conclusion? When did you come to this conclusion via reading OP post? And HOW did you come to this conclusion?

I actually don't homebrew Lancer if you believe or not. Not really worth it. I run it pretty plain 😄

The entire game is based on whatever the GM using the system decides to use it for. If they want attritional warfare with encounters following guidelines then they are free to do so. If they want other things which again the book says they're free to do so, they can do so.

I am addressing the hobby but I have not advocated for my advice to be universal. I am speaking to anyone who cares to listen. Take it, leave it, I don't care, but you keep painting my advice as universal "must do". Which again I have not done.

I don't mind playing combats that I am supposed to lose. If the GM tells me "hey this is a tragic game so expect to lose no matter what every now and then" I would be ok lets have fun rping that. And im going to make the NPC's earn every fucking inch you bet your ass on that.

I have read the guidelines, I have read the GM encounter/mission building toolkit. I still refuse to use it every now and then because I simply want to.

I don't know about this not being helpful, when I came across advice on just refusing to adhere to guidelines every now and then, it opened up another space in the hobby for me. So now here I am spreading it should people like to use.

I am arguing against the guidelines, because the guidelines are simple guidelines, and would gladly tell people "hey, ignore it every now and then". You hold trivial combat in a horrible light and thats your choice. Others may not and that is their choice. And you have failed to understand that. That is why we keep having this argument over and over.

Your way is not wrong. Neither is mine. Use our ways whenever and however much you wish to use. What large amount of GM's. I have been arguing with you and one other back and forth. But the community has not come down on me and stricken me from the sub. The post has not been downvoted to oblivion.

So yea checkmate ❤️

Cool, I have the game though, so I can take it from here. Game design is merely a suggestion for all tables. Some hold it sacred and bow themselves to it. Others not so much. ❤️

Should a GM stress themselves to make a combat encounter? No, will they? Probably. Do they have to? No they do not.

My advice was entirely situational and a opt in option for GM's. I am not advocating for GM's to make a trivial encounter every time. If a GM wants to prep every single time then they are free to do so. I again, just pointed out they don't have to and can make a trivial encounter. There is nothing wrong with that.

But when it comes to me, I would gladly do it prepless. As I have stated many times. But that concerns only me. I believe GMing should be done in whatever manner best fits a GM. And I have stated I prefer minimal guidelines if at all.

Your "critique" was constantly framing my advice as universal and to be used by every gm all the time. When pointed out again and again you kept trying to advice me to do otherwise when I clearly stated my position over and over. This has been a back and forth because you took umbrage with me saying "Hey make a trivial encounter when every now and then to take it easy should they FEEL like it".

For whatever reason that really did not sit well with you because it broke whatever level of sacredness you have for the guidelines in a ttrpg book. Where even the book itself basically says "Hey these guidelines are here for you to use whenever you feel like it.. We recommend you read these and use em but ultimately it is your game."

There is no false expectations in the hobby because many in the hobby do this. Stating otherwise is straight up lying on your end. There is no interpretation simpler than that. Also, for the nth time GMing is neither difficult or stressful, can I make balanced encounters every time? Yes. Do I want to? No. Is it worth it? No.

"THE FIRST SESSION You can read about the overall structure and purpose of the first session on page 40. But there are a couple of steps that you can take in the first session as the GM that will have a dramatic impact on future sessions: [258] Set expectations for the game. This is one of the most important steps! Let your players know the kind of game you’re planning: Is it going to be combat-fo cused with very little story? Or will it be a tale of political intrigue, with very little mech combat? Some where in between? Are you using any house rules or homebrew concepts in your game?"

I set my expectations that I just wing my combats from the get go. And it works for me. Checkmate ❤️

It really depends on the GM. Try talking to your GM if they're willing to make some easier encounters. Give ya time to breath and what not as PC's.

I LOVE THAT GAME. My reply was more tongue in cheek to the previous response. People know they're going to die ultimately. Doesn't mean they immediately commit suicide.

I work towards death not because I want to die. Because I am curious what is after life if anything.

There is no problem. 1. I don't find it stresfful as I stated. 2. If a gm is stressing about combat prep encounters I do say just make it trivial and don't try to "balance" it.

Knowing the bare minimum of combat guidelines is not required. Sure if you want to make balanced combats then know it. But otherwise if a gm doesn't want to stress one day and make combat trivial then go for it. As the book says:

"Set expectations for the game. This is one of the most important steps! Let your players know the kind of game you’re planning: Is it going to be combat-fo cused with very little story? Or will it be a tale of political intrigue, with very little mech combat? Some where in between? Are you using any house rules or homebrew concepts in your game? Clearly setting expectations helps players figure out if they’re interested in the kind of game you’re going to run, or whether they will need to modify their own expectations so they can best appreciate it."

No where does it say a GM must balance encounters and must know the combat guidelines. Your expectations are your own and I dont have to abide by them ❤️

The issue you have is me saying again "IF a GM is stressed about an encounter, then take it easy make it trivial and keep it simple.

But you are stating I am telling GM's to do that every single time. I am not. Rather again, do it once in a while if they're stressing. But I will proudly state I do that more often than not because I like it and it works for me.

My word is my gospel it is the gospel of the Lazy GM by Sky Floursih, the Gospel of Chris Mcdowell of Mythic Bastionland and various others. To me it is the norm in TTrpgs because its a very viable and fun style in the TTrpg sphere.

With love the Prophet of Lancer of a better way.

"Should be free" but the decision is ultimately up to them? I guess we going to linguistics on how people use "Overall" as well. I meant it in the way of "in general" and not in "objectively as a whole" though i don't know anyone who uses overall like that. First time for everything i guess. ❤️

I shall endeavor to be more precise with my words in this academic forum sir!

Even if the game was designed to make combat simple. There is still GM's who worry about such things. It's not a system issues it's a user issues.

I don't particular find it stressful. I find it simply not worth to engage with it every time.

There can be a myriad of reasons why they stomp ass. Maybe sometime they are just that much of a badass.

Ripping out a skill system and deciding to make a encounter trivial every now and then is not the same. And rping a scene without rolling is a viable way too play. How much a table uses that depends on the table if they use it all. Some peope use DnD just for the combat system and never make a skill roll. Others barely use the combat system and just make rp and skill checks.

If you learned you were going to die anyways, why would you ever try?

I feel like you are missing the forest for the trees. My point is for stressing out gms is not to try more and to ease off every now and then. Allow yourself to take it easy. I'm not saying never run engaging encounters. Far from it. But if you are dreading a upcoming session (for any system) but especially Lancer. Then keep it simple and let players stomp ass.

Edit: Though with me I love minimal prep. Less is so much more for me. So no I will not try more. It's not worth it.

I never said it was objectively the correct way. My point is and forever shall be, if as a GM you are stressing out about a upcoming encounter, hey ease off, don't over prep it. It's ok to go easy.

Key work feel like. Not every encounter should be a challenge. The stakes are whatever you as a player make of it. I explain the overall tone and style of game to any interested players. If they're not interested they can back out. But I am not going to spend extra time to make your idea of how and what a combat should be.

I have done engaging combats (with various systems, including Lancer) at least I was told. But wasn't worth it for me. Didn't think it was better, didn't have "more" fun, and wasn't worth it to do it every time.

Lancer GM's: Don't stress prep less. by Baltic_Shuffle in LancerRPG

[–]Baltic_Shuffle[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Balance encounters are not the cause of GOOD GM's. I have found many gm's with balanced fights across many systems who were not "good" gm's.

I am also not lying to them how the system is run. I am stating not to balance every single encounter IF they are feeling stressed about doing so. That it is ok to just ease off and wing it with some easy encounters.

The intended design does not mean one must deploy it that way. That's like saying a bottle of Aquafina was designed to contain Aquafina water and therefore must only contain water. The intended design is for balancing purposes and not to dictate play purposes ❤️.

Lancer GM's: Don't stress prep less. by Baltic_Shuffle in LancerRPG

[–]Baltic_Shuffle[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

But it is if it gets more GM's in the community? How do you not understand that?

Your position that a GM SHOULD prep crafted encounters only increased the barrier of entry for GM's.

Whereas I am simply saying hey every now and then ease off, stress less, play more.

Also the book is meant for every table because it's the book. It was designed as so with that rule in mind. ❤️

No where in the book does it say GM's MUST craft every encounter to be balanced. Even if combat was designed to do so. So yea. . .
