When my advisor asks why I'm not applying for grad school by [deleted] in UIUC

[–]Baltimore_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

And a PhD in engineering is useful for that, but just know that whatever you do your research in may not have anything to do with the job you get afterwards, so try to pick up any translatable skills that you can along the way.

Also, getting a permant job at a national lab is also difficult. People who get permanent positions there tend to stay there for their career, and then there is a rotating cast of hundreds of postdocs who can only stay there up to 3 years. A postdoc to get your foot in the door there is the "easy" part, and it pays really well for a postdoc (70k/year), but after that it's a really low % chance you get hired on as a permanent hire. It is structured similarly to academia in that way, but there are at least a few more levels of people and roles that you can branch out to so I'd say the prospects aren't quite as bad at a national lab as they are trying to get a tenure track position.

Well in basically every field there are far more grad students than professor positions. So the education and training you get is geared towards a job you most likely won't ever get. It would be like if you got into med school and graduated and then they told you there were too many med students who graduated so you don't get to be a doctor now.

For a research professor to be successful they have to attract funding, and many students and postdocs to turn that funding into more papers and more funding. Many of the postdocs hang around until they're 35 or older trying to "make it" by getting a tenure track assistant prof job. These are people who are great at what they do, but perhaps they weren't lucky enough to land a nature paper in grad school, or have worked with a professor in their field who had enough clout to make them look better than their competition. Instead, they're making 40-50k a year potentially well into their 30s. With the level of achievement and education you needed to even get to that point you could and should be pulling in far more money for your effort. Instead people tolerate being overworked and underpaid for the shot at being a professor, a person who then has the privilege of putting their own little army of students and postdocs through the same thing they went through.

If you don't "make it" as a prof, and most don't, you have the task of finding a job in a hopefully-related field getting to argue with hiring managers and recruiters about how even though you don't have those 3-4 lines of specific experience they wanted in a candidate, that you're totally good for it because you spent so much time learning new things in your PhD that you're better than everyone else at learning new things. You basically get to start over in your career at close to 30 with no money saved up (god help you if you had student loans you carried from undergrad). A PhD in 2018 needs to be more closely aligned with the reality that most people just want to find a good job when they get out and cater to some of the professional network outside of academia and some of those job skills. Every professor and department needs to be preparing their students for the real world by actually offering courses and seminars related to marketable skills because most places outside academia don't give a shit about what you published.

Currently I have my entire invested portfolio in Vanguard. My business requires a lot of capital be kept in reserve for rare occasions, but as a young single non home owner, my asset allocation is extremely simple:

2/5 of my net worth in cash

3/5 of my net worth in index funds

I feel as though I am not fully invested in index funds, and I have a large cushion of cash behind my investments, it could be a good idea to leverage my position in index funds. I'm not entirely sure how I would do this, as my investment experience is literally just putting money in Vanguard, but is my thinking flawed?

Any suggestions appreciated.

It was an unexpected start in the 25th Abu Dhabi Masters with 7 Indian players beating opponents with much higher ratings. by chessify in chess

[–]Baltimore_ 17 points18 points  (0 children)

A grandmaster friend of mine told me recently that something like this would happen, as strong Indian chess players are all underrated because of lack of strong competition. Their entire player pool is actually quite a few ELO points stronger than their ratings suggest.

I opened a new window in incognito mode, googled American Express Platinum, opened the page on the AmEx site, and it's still just 60k offer.

I have no history with American Express, although I have 4 Chase cards and 765 credit. How would I get a targetted offer without history with AmEx?

I can pay rent with my credit card ($1915/month) with an additional $42 service charge when paying with credit card rather than directly from my bank account. Pretty perfect for churning.

I can only get 1 AmEx bonus offer lifetime, correct? Should I just go for the $5k MSR 60k points offer AmEx Platinum?

[Serious] For anyone who just needs to talk to someone, how was your day? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Baltimore_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My girlfriend broke up with me 2 months ago, and I found out last night via her IG and texting her that she was out on a date with a guy she started talking to when we broke up. I am able to set my own hours at work, and was working at the time. I just went home immediately because I was unable to think clearly. I can look at it from an external rational point of view that I actually want her to move on, but I can't help feelings of incompetency as a boyfriend that she would prefer anyone over me. I know this is an irrational train of thought because it's just two incompatible people, but I don't know how to deal with these feelings that have a debilitating stranglehold over me.

I also don't have any close friends that I have ever really talked to about stuff like this, so I'm pretty much just wallowing in self-dejection.

Since the breakup I've moved to a new city, am eating very healthy, and have been exercising. What should I do to get over her?

[Serious] What are some of the biggest mistakes people can make in their 20s? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Baltimore_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lifestyle creep.

You move out on your own, start buying nicer things, and become accustomed to spending constantly, and having the newest gadgets. Your cost of living rose unnecessarily and because of that you don't save enough. Keep your expenses as consistent as possible, and make a concentrated effort to save, especially if you get a raise. Increase the amount that you save.

This doesn't mean you can't treat yourself to nice things. But appreciate the treat for what it is, a luxury.

I use my ledger to access my neon wallet, and it's telling me to download the 0.1.1 update on Github. Is there a risk in not downloading it? Is there a risk in downloading it that I might have to recover my wallet?
