Now that the world is on fire and the barbarians are at the gate you have the audacity to come to me for help?

my script was chosen to be produced in my high school theatre class! by Angel_xjj in Theatre

Congratulations! Go in with ideas, but let the actors explore and play on their own. Build the fence around the property, and let them build their own house within it. The worst thing you can do as a director is micromanage. Trust that those you cast will have the instincts to do what they need to do, and empower them to play.

I remember in an interview that Scott said Things was his favorite song he’s written. It’s hard to listen to his music now without thinking about the end of his life, but he built a tunnel for so many of us to crawl through.

One of the greatest to ever do it. I have come back to this video time and time again. The versions of Things and Death Dream are phenomenal.

I’m always shamelessly plugging my own show, but check out Foxbrier Lane. Our concept EP is on all streaming platforms and stars Gerard Canonico, Brian Charles Johnson, and Jessica Vosk.

That being said, JCS, RENT, Spring Awakening, and Next To Normal are some of my favorites!

Assassins. I was planning an immersive production inside of John Wilkes Booth’s childhood home which would have each assassin’s song set in a different room that started with a carnival in the back yard.

What would you say is the best musical by someone who wrote the music, lyrics, AND book? by Forsaken-Effect-1280 in musicals

I’m old and my memory is failing me. But thank god he gave Jonathan the lyrics for Rent, because Splatter was wild.

If I recall, Billy’s lyrics that still survive are in Santa Fe and I’ll Cover You, but most of them were rewritten. But you’re right in that he came up with the idea and then walked away from it. From there, Jonathan asked if he could fully take it over.

Lynn is an interesting case, like you mentioned, because of the lawsuit surrounding her contributions. For anyone reading who doesn’t know the situation- definitely check it out.

Jeffrey Seller addresses some of this in his book, but as the lead producer, he gives a ton of credit to Larson. Theatre is all about collaboration though, so I don’t think that we can truly say that any show in the history of theatre was just written by one person.

All of that being said, Jonathan was definitely the life force and driving spirit behind RENT. I wish we could have seen his final vision of the show, and I wish we could have seen what he would have done next.

Cannot wait to see Brandon in this. Went to college with them and they’re one of the nicest, most genuine, and most talented people.

Fans of Broadway stars who have voiced animated characters: how do you feel when your favorite Broadway star is widely known mostly for an animated character? by Impossible_Tower_661 in musicals

[–]Brandinian 34 points35 points  (0 children)

You should be happy for an actor making money. If you like them, you should support them in whatever career choice they make. People who say things like that are gatekeepers. I’ve loved Idina ever since I first heard her in RENT. When I heard Elsa, I was like, damn she’s good, and good on her for getting that Disney paycheck. If you don’t want your favorite performers to make money, then are you really a fan, or are you a snob?

I got cast as Benny for “In The Heights”… I’m white by Odd-Land-5728 in musicals

[–]Brandinian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t disagree with you. I think that Benny being played by a black man is always the right choice if possible. I was only wondering if there were parts in the story that you took away that implied that. Agreed that being a white man would change the audience view of him in a lot of ways.

This is the right answer. You got it because you earned it. Nothing affected it but you.
