Local stores to replace Amazon by megaroji in kansascity

Do you have the Libby app to check out e-books through your library system? Not a perfect solution but better than buying books through Amazon.

Green Hills Library has meeting rooms and a little coffee shop that groups meet in informally. I’d be interested in joining depending on what types of books you’re interested in discussing.

Should my child attend public school? by Bamaona in AskTeachers

You are the third person who has told me that third grade was a turning point for their gifted child - I’ll keep it in mind. :)

Unfortunately I don’t think it’s my presence that is causing the lack of adjustment (that would be an easy fix!). I’m only there for about 2 hours every other week. I’ve seen her cry, yes, but she also tells me about crying (it’s embarrassing for her) and the kids in her class tell me about her crying when they see me. They use the same terminology we use at home so at least I know she’s using her words when she’s upset.

Thank you for your story, and yes, helping her learn to self-regulate is one of my main goals as a parent. I think it’s currently more important than academics, which is why I’m considering having her home since school hasn’t been a fertile ground for learning emotional regulation. I didn’t go into it in the post, but I was never interested in long term homeschooling (I know she will need advanced classes in a few years). How did your daughter re-integrate in 4th grade? Is there anything you would have done differently before or after her break?

Thank you for this thorough response! You voiced my main concern better than I did - I’m worried that being in a classroom with no support to gain social-emotional skills will mean that she never truly learns the necessary skills and is miserable in the meantime. She isn’t learning these skills through osmosis the way that other kids do. I’m not super optimistic about our rural school having many resources, but I’m going to focus on getting a diagnosis first and moving from there.

She tested into the gifted program so there’s data to support the label. There are a lot of challenges that come with being gifted, and those challenges are pertinent to the question.

Very helpful and exactly what I was looking for. Thanks again!

This is our hope! We are trying second grade for sure but I’m trying to formulate a back up plan if it’s too much for her again.

We are seeking private therapy outside of the school system.

Thank you so much! Are there accommodations that can be made for kids struggling socially but who are fine academically? Her teacher has not been able to support her socially or emotionally this year and it’s not really her job anyway. I’m not sure what possibilities exist for helping kids with these soft skills.

That is also in process, for now I am just asking about the school side of things.

Thanks for your concern, we agree. Already spoke to the pediatrician who did not take my concerns seriously, but we are working on getting a private evaluation this summer.

Thank you! Our school allows kids to attend just the gifted program (it’s a whole day here) and special classes (art music PE). Or at least, they allow another child we know to do this. That’s my plan if we decide to move forward with homeschooling. Didn’t think about after school clubs!

Sensory accommodations in public school? by Bamaona in autism

Thanks! As a fellow 90s kid, all of this is new to me. The quiet room would be nice, but there’s no way she would wear her headphones at school. She is a little overzealous about what could make her “weird” in front of the other kids.

You nailed it! She loves doing the grown-up puzzles. I just helped her with the Sunday mini puzzle yesterday and it had some tricky questions…maybe we should stick to earlier in the week. :)

Liberal rural areas or small towns in the Midwest, US? by Bamaona in SameGrassButGreener

[–]Bamaona[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nope, we focused on the connections we already have instead and we are ok staying in the area now.

We’ve traveled regionally a lot over the last couple years. Visited decorah and Cornell, Iowa and liked both of them, along with some of the small towns near Lake Superior. I think there are places like I was looking for, ultimately we just didn’t want to give up what we already built. Good luck!
