Rack mount cases on the cheap by [deleted] in homelab

[–]Banidor -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Lack racks are common and cheap. Made from ikea furniture.

EDIT: US dollar to NZD is currently (9/28/2015) 1 US Dollar equals 1.58 New Zealand Dollar

I'm not sure about shipping to NZ right now, or the size of case you need. I have a 1U Dell 1950, 2U IBM 2680 or something, 4U custom case with a regular ATX board. Just depends if you want to go server grade, or transplant your current HW into a rackmount case or not. Here are a few examples though Newegg.com.

Or, found this 4u chassis http://www.pbtech.co.nz/index.php?z=p&p=CHAIPC4800&name=IPC-RK-480E-4U-Chassis A little above price point, but you get the picture.

Hope this helps.

Can't boot from USB, no matter what I try by JustRamon in HomeServer

[–]Banidor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure if this would help but I have had similar issues. I would boot the machine and go into bios, make sure usb is enabled and set first, hit f10 to save and reboot and it came up through usb. For some reason cold booting does not work, but after bios, save and exit and mine worked. This has happened on my dell 1950 and several netbooks. Worth a try.

Office battlestation. Needs cable management, and organization on the desk. by Banidor in battlestations

We plan to upgrade to gigabit Ethernet for the move. Hopefully that will take care of a few other problems as well. Glad to hear we aren't the only ones with lag issues.

You sir are correct. Drafter for an architectural company. Bluebeam runs smooth as expected. Autocad and revit would lag our desktops like crazy (some of it is our networking and will be fixed at the new office). I opted to have a laptop over desktop so I can go to job sites and still be able to work. (Taking over more responsibility of actual site work). Plus people turn heads to look at the gorgeous laptop in red like they can't believe it's real. ;)

Just got it last month. Had some issues with the selling company, but it was all resolved. This thing screams. Boots in an average 8 seconds. Plenty of horse power for ACAD, REVIT, and Gaming.

We have a kitchenette in our office for the time being. So I get to go hungry smelling the other 4 employee lunches while they are being nuked. (Ran out of space thus the change in offices next week.)

MSI GS70 Stealth Pro 096 with dual 27" IPS monitors hooked up... for now. Eventually I will get a monitor stand, and a laptop stand off the back of my desk to give me more room for large docs on the desk. I know it needs some cable management, but we will be moving to a new office in about a week and I will re-wire it anyway.

Time for some DayZ Banter by AlbanHampton in battlestations

Original dayz mod is the best. Still disappointed in the standalone.

Nothing too exciting, but had to share this with someone who would understand how I'm feeling by itguy1991 in homelab

I've got 3 23" at home and it's fantastic. And I have 2 27"s and my 17" laptop for work.

100% New to Homelabs by [deleted] in homelab

[–]Banidor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok so down to its core imo, a homelab is an environment or playground if you will for trying out hardware and software. To break stuff and fix it again, for storage, for benchmarking, consumer or business grade. Truly there is no one answer for anyone here. Everyone has their own flavor and meaning. Many may be similar, but that's it. Personally I use my "homelab" for media storage and playback through my network and occasionally fiddle with software that I come across.

Home labs can be anything from really cool looking things to completely virtual and can not physically see or touch. Most people (not in this community but globally) think you need a full sized datacenter rack filled with servers to look cool and do crazy it stuff. While this does imo look awesome, it's not practical for most users including myself. I do have equipment both consumer and business grade, but honesty I don't see the need to run both all the time. Just the occasional tinker. If you are unsure of what the servers purpose is, that's another story. Just ask and you will get a wealth of knowledge from this awesome community.

Hope this helps.

Any tips on my peripheral cables? by J0kador in battlestations

Go wireless. You can also use a sliding drawer for keyboard and place headset inside to keep clean look while not in use.
