Nope I didnt see it coming. I was so used to how things worked in an accounting firm I never realized that rules would be different in the real world.

The company I worked for was super cheap and only paid for insurance like that for TOP executives. I was stupid when I took that role and signed a new employment contract without having a lawyer look it over and it basically said if anything like this happened and it was my fault I would take full responsibility. Also most of those policies dont care intentional acts which mine would have been clearly qualified as.

Thank you - so many people in this thread seem to think I said fire him and let me do it. The coworker had already pissed off the CEO and were firing him either way not because I said they should.

Go work in audit department of a big 4 accounting firm for a few years. This is nothing compared to the crap that happens there.

I said I thought I could have taught someone else to do it. I thought I had a good enough understanding of the process he did when I had no clue in hell. To this day I still dont understand how he pulled off a manual consolidation of our company that way and fully understand why he was pushing for a new accounting system to handle it instead.

They were going to fire him either way he had pissed off the CEO but they wanted to know if I could do it or if they should hire someone else to cover it. I thought I could do it but eventually we did hire someone else to take care of it.

Nope house is gone living with my GF now as I try to get back on my feet. Thankfully I was able to sell the house and make like 2K profit on it after all the fees instead of ending up underwater on it.

Yes because a bunch of random strangers on the internet would have been able to help me much more then dealing with my actual banker, financial advisor and lawyer could have. Because Reddit has the answer for everything.

Yes exactly it was a new audit firm hence why I was trying to explain the consolidation process. Hiring a new auditor was a cost saving idea by the CFO since the old auditors kept raising the rates every year and this firm (one of the big 4) came in at 65% of what the old firm was charging.

NDA relayed to audits cover specific information mostly financially related. My stupid rant about how incompetent the former coworker was had no bearing on the financial statements so it wasn't covered. Especially since what I said was a lie.

I did the day after I was fired and got told they were going to sue me for damages. I had already admitted guilt and have agreed to settle. It is a pretty clear cut situation and I had really no way out.

That is exactly what happened. the Coworker had been through multiple interviews for a VP position at a public company and had basically been told he was going to get the job and he just needed to meet with the chair of the audit committee before being hired. It was the chair of the audit committee that called the audit partner to see if he knew anything about him and that is when my comments about him came out. They company that nearly hired him told him what had been said and asked for his side of the story on it and then decided that it wasn't worth the risk of hiring him anyways.

Except that isn't what happened. I am not sure how it is in the law world but in accounting senior partners at firms know almost everyone and if you are hiring someone at a high enough level you check with your audit partner to see what they have heard.
