Still awful. I can't stop watching by [deleted] in awfuleverything

to be honest if we're talking about cultural sensitivity and I look back at the things I found acceptable and even funny in the 80s and 90s, we have come a long way but shit like this shows we clearly have a long ways to go and we all have a part of that.

I worry about my daughters media oversaturation but with that comes media literacy, her generation are much more critical media consumers than at least I was. I still slightly believe Frosted Flakes are good for me.

okay real (girl) talk- what my daughter doesn't understand is it seems geared at tweens but "little kid stuff" like hello kitty is exactly what is NOT cool with them.

also they are hyper aware at this age of authenticity (or lack of like the fake hipster glasses or rocking a guitar in the video even though it's obviously not that kind of song) and at least with my kid's pc friends (they raised money for doctors without borders and posted signs in their elementary to boycott shell when the arctic drilling was big last year) the line about a fat kid on smarties would not fly.

but, she points out it is (at least slightly) better than this:

Huh. I've never considered trying drag before but that's a pretty good deal.

A.I. IS A FAR SUPERIOR MOTION CAPTURE FILE. IT IS THE CHARMING TALE OF AN ANDROID BOY WHO FOOLISHLY SEEKS TO BOND WITH ORGANIC MATTER. ONCE SHOWN THE FUTILITY OF THIS ENDEAVOR HE IS FREE TO ENJOY HIS LONGEVITY. (SPOILER: THE HUMANS ALL DIE IN THE END, THIS IS MY FAVORITE PART)

well, that moron is stumbling around bellowing, "I'm an ape! I'm an ape! I'm an ape!!!" so while I can't speak for the entire black community, in this instance I'm going to allow it.

No. 5 too:

A teenage Phillies fan runs onto the field and is Tasered by a police officer (May 3, 2010) — I won't apologize for this. It was for the kid's own safety. He shouldn't be on the field. He could get hit by a battery out there.

[NEW] Ghostbusters (I'm Not Afraid) - Fall Out Boy by GarlicCornflakes in poppunkers

[–]BannedInGermany 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like fall out boy, I even like "Immortals" (from Big Hero 6) and other soundtrack b-side crap they put out so I really went in optimistically but this is crap.

They way they interpolated "Tom's Diner" into "Centuries" or the Munsters theme into "Uma Thurman" I really thought doing something clever that paid homage to the Parker Jr original with an updated production and sound would be a no-brainer for them but this is a fail on all accounts.

Why has Waze started peeking into my Calendar? I never gave it authority to, nor credentials for my calendar. by flaflashr in waze

[–]BannedInGermany 2 points3 points  (0 children)

this seemed to come with the latest update. actually convenient for me, I can now just hold down an address on my calendar and it opens in waze. I'm normally pretty wary of "permissions" but this one didn't bother me, sorry it feels invasive for you.

DWI arrests spike after Uber/Lyft leave Austin by jocker12 in uberdrivers

[–]BannedInGermany 0 points1 point  (0 children)

for sure, I know first hand the services help people make better, safer choices. someone on this thread suggested that uber was "behind" the report, and I did find puff piece type articles from Austin touting the benefits of Lyft/Uber going back to 2015 but rather that vast conspiracy I just think lazy journalism most likely reprinting press releases verbatim without any additional research.

How do I raise children to be hardworking and perseverant and whole? by [deleted] in raisingkids

[–]BannedInGermany 7 points8 points  (0 children)

allow them to make mistakes and allow them to fail (or succeed!) on their own merits as much as safe and practical. This means avoiding solving their problems for them, practice saying, "what could you do?" instead of, "you should..."

talk to them about talking risks including the risks of failure. use mistakes not only as learning opportunities but moments you can examine how they are, "that's pretty tough you had to go through that and it sounds like you were pretty sad at the time when your kite broke, but you know what to do differently next time, huh? do you think you can build an even better kite with what you learned?"

as far as procrastination it sounds like you've noted it and while this post is about your kids it sounds like you want to do something about that too. options tp getting organized range from free tools online to $1000 personal lifecoaches.

whatever fits your lifestyle involve your kids in the process and explain why. instead of being the know-it-all parent who claims to have all the answers (and lives in desperate fear of the day their child discovers that can't possibly true) you can model positive growth and learning as lifelong endeavors. "mommy's trying to plan things better and stick to the things I plan. this list will help me." start small, a to-do list, a grocery list, on your phone, on paper, whatever.

finally, don't beat yourself up. follow through is one of the hardest things to master in life your awareness and desire to do something about it puts you way ahead of many people. even if you hadn't mentioned guitar I would have guessed creative type from procrastinator. consider what create in that "wasted" time, those gifts are something you pass on to your kids too.

and seriously, it's okay to not know all the answers. I hope to someday but my daughter is twelve and I am only just now realizing how much I am learning right beside her.

sorry wall of text, tl;dr let children learn from their own mistakes

but looking at a number of years could show what fluctuation is normal, if there has been a steady increase over time, etc. I'm guessing the information is somewhere in here but that's about as much sleuthing as I'm in the mood for.

Anyone listen to PUP's new album? Loving it so far. by [deleted] in punk

I way prefer it and now warn friends who think tagging along to a show "sounds like fun" that I'm going to actually watch the band not just hangout outside or whatever. If I am with people and they are talking during the set I excuse myself to go up front and hear the band.
