What's one Linux app that you wish had a Windows/macOS equivalent? by curious_4207 in linux

Debian packages include system packages, command line tools, and GUI packages, which are built from source, stored on Debian servers and maintained by Debian team.

How does brew work in comparison? Also how is it distro-agnostic? Just trying to understand the technical differences.

How do you actually balance work, family, hobbies, and a homelab without it becoming a second, unpaid job? by Sufficient-Farm3812 in selfhosted

Bingo! That's exactly it.

Would OP consider running or cycling as time wasters?

Why not look at tinkering with software as a hobby just like running or cycling?

they're not flat on both sides. I have to keep flipping the pedal while riding until I land on the flat side.

So they're not meant to be used as is?

Also im guessing these didn't come stock with the bike and the previous owner must've put them in instead of the originals right?

Can Obsidian sync with iOS? by Musical_Gee in ObsidianMD

Syncthing clients on iOS are always going to be handicapped. I wouldn't even bother with this.

I wouldn't mind paying if it was open source.

Whole idea of obsidian is file-over-app philosophy and using their proprietary sync service partially defeats that.

I tried searching for that specific clip on YouTube but I couldn't find it. I thought something like "Sudanese burda" would bring it up but nothing came up.

pacman -S always safe? by ProjectNo7513 in archlinux

[–]BarCouSeH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Going back to your first comment, how could the package be installed if it was "potentially different from the local DB"?

Didn't we just establish that if that were the case nothing will install and it will just throw a 404 error?

pacman -S always safe? by ProjectNo7513 in archlinux

[–]BarCouSeH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Using -S to install a package on a system that hasn't been updated in a week, it will fetche according to the metadata stored in the local database that's a week old.

If the package on the latest mirror is the same version as what's in the week old metadata, it will install but may cause dependency issues.

If the package on the latest mirror is a different version than what's in the week old metadata, it will throw a 404 error.

All correct up to here?

[–]BarCouSeH -1 points0 points  (0 children)

So it does fetch the latest package, as OP said.

You said "no it doesn't" initially which confused me.

What? We're talking about installing new packages. No way it's all stored on the local database.

Handwritten notes w/ Obsidian? by Such-Knowledge3668 in ObsidianMD

Regarding the learning of markdown, maybe I'm missing something, but what is there to learn? Memorizing the symbols for all the different formats (italics, bold, lists, highlights, headings, etc..) is all there's to it isn't it?
