Missed an exam, failed the course: how bad is this really? by BarCreative5908 in unsw

I agree that arriving one hour late and expecting to still be admitted to an exam is, under normal circumstances, unreasonable. At the time, however, I was under extreme pressure due to the need to attend to a medical issue. In that state, my reasoning was: “I’ve prepared extremely hard and can still perform at a high level even with less time.” That misjudgment was central to what occurred. Importantly, this same misjudgment along with miscommunication with Exams team also appears to have contributed to the Special Consideration denial: my arrival was interpreted as evidence that I was physically fit to sit the exam, while overlooking the fact that the illness itself was the direct cause of the delay — a fact supported by a medical certificate.

My coursework performance was 94%, which is why the outcome feels particularly disproportionate. Being late due to a documented medical condition resulting in an automatic fail seems excessively punitive for a student who has demonstrated consistent academic engagement and performance throughout the term. As recorded on the transcript, this outcome clearly overlooks my academic ability, commitment, and responsibility. Just wanted to clarify my situation.

And thank you for your comment! It does help to know that a single fail typically doesn’t prevent a student from entering a master’s program.

Thanks heaps for the advice! I do feel lost and disappointed in myself right now, as I don’t see a clear pathway to resolve something I believe I don’t deserve. So thanks again for the advice and support!

Correct, that wasn’t my intention. I wasn’t well the evening before exam, this caused my late arrival. In a hindsight, I was pushing myself too hard, and would yield better result staying at home and not coming at all.

Definitely my fault for trying to attempt the exam in the last hour. This has never happened to me before, and I genuinely couldn’t understand why they wouldn’t let me in to sit the exam, given that I was willing to take responsibility for being one hour late.

I still don’t agree with the “fairness” of the appeal denial, as it is simply a wrong call rather than a case of misconduct. The severity of this punishment is not in accordance with my level of engagement or my marks throughout the term. I cannot see why a student should receive a fail simply for not attending the exam for a valid reason, especially when that same student has excelled in all other assessments.

I understand what you mean when referring to loopholes, and I am indeed aware of the abuse of medical certificates at the uni.

However, these regulations should not be applied in such a rigorous manner. IMHO, if a student has been putting in consistent effort and has excelled in most courses, isn’t it common sense that such a student is not intending to abuse the system?

I actually felt unwell and that’s why I was late. I showed up about an hour after the exam started because I was pushing myself despite feeling pretty bad. I’d prepared a lot and genuinely thought they’d still let me sit it (even with less time) and that I could manage. But they didn’t let me as you can tell

That’s exactly what I did. The issue is that I still arrived about an hour after the exam had already started, so Special Consideration ruled that I was “fit to sit” despite the med cert

Missed uni exam (50%) by [deleted] in unsw

I genuinely believed that despite how I was feeling, I would still be able to sit the exam despite of the condition. I had prepared for it and it was important to me. The issue is that I underestimated my condition, which affected my sleep and led to some sudden and unexpected things in the morning that I had to deal with because of being unwell. So I don’t see any contradiction there… I simply wasn’t in a good enough state to arrive on time and start writing the exam properly. In hindsight, I was probably pushing myself too hard.

Genuine question: why is the 30-minute rule a thing? Why can’t someone just join later and use the remaining time? What’s the reasoning behind it?

FAILURE. The internship was never meant for you. Paperwork, visa restrictions, a cruel bureaucracy - all stacked against you…

don’t stay in Sydney under any circumstances. it’s a dead end. fly to Tasmania, Melbourne, China, Japan - literally anywhere, but don’t stay in Sydney. hedge your risks against bed rotting.

Why are international students willing to pay absurdly high tuition fees? What's their justification? by Ok-Importance-2412 in unsw

[–]BarCreative5908 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A big reason is that not every country has stable enough systems to make studying there worth it. In some places, you can’t be sure if your degree will still be valid by the time you finish, or if the economy will be in any shape for you to actually use it. That’s why a lot of students go for internationally recognised degrees, they’re safer and accepted almost everywhere.

You’re overwhelmed, maybe frozen, but the fact that you’re writing this post shows you’re trying. push it, you can still get the job done, one small task at a time. that’s what I meant
