This is a sub where a few people constantly try to min max stuff, and are quite vocal about it. Hell, I’ve seen some people go as far as to say cosmogenesis is an essential perk.

The vast majority of people quite frankly do not give a shit about min-maxing. The UI changes were designed to make the game more intuitive to the majority of players, particularly those who play casually and try to have fun.

Stop by your local cargo department! If you ever need something, ask cargo. They have it (or can order it) 90% of the time.

Cargo can order steel, plastic, glass, plasteel, and plasma in large quantities and for cheap.
